I had a brow appointment scheduled for 9:20 a.m. at the Ulta in McHenry this past Saturday. I arrived at the check-in desk at approximately 9:22 a.m. and was immediately told, quite rudely, that my appointment had just been canceled as a "no show." I explained that my appointment was scheduled for 9:20 a.m., which was confirmed both via their text system and again by phone the day prior. I was told I was "incorrect" and that the appointment was actually for 9:15 a.m. I then showed my original confirmation on my phone clearly stating 9:20 a.m., at which point a 9:15 a.m. cancellation conveniently appeared. Despite being less than two minutes late for an appointment that had been confirmed for 9:20 a.m., I was told they could not accommodate me because they were fully booked and insisted my appointment was at 9:15am despite seeing with their eyes, that it was at 9:20am (they did not share evidence that their system actually indicated 9:15am and the individual was very rude from the get go). There was no apology, no attempt to resolve the discrepancy, and no accountability--only repeated insistence that I was out of luck. When I expressed that this was unfair and suggested their booking system needed to be corrected, the response was simply, "I agree," with no further effort to help. The interaction escalated unnecessarily, and the tone throughout was dismissive and unprofessional. This was one of the most rude and unjust customer service experiences I've had. The lack of any type of apology for the inconvenience to me, was icing on the cake. No respect for the customer's time or money. I booked an appointment with Lourdes for an everyday make up look. My appt was at 10:30. She did not walk into the salon until 10:44am. We did not start until after 10:50am. To add insult to injury, she changed the price of the appt from $45 for everyday make up to $60 for formal make up. I was never told "We are switching from an everyday look to a formal look. It is going to be $15 extra. Is that ok with you?" I confronted Lourdes about the additional cost. She told me to talk to the manager. I told the brunet manager what happened, she told me twice that she would "fix it", and then went back on her word after I refused to apply for an Ulta card. I went into the salon for a cut and color. My hair is very curly and honestly a mess to deal with. It has split ends that I can't get rid of, wouldn't grow and nothing I could do would make the curls soft or cute. My stylist was Erin Sibigtroth. She is AMAZING. Honestly, the Goddess of hair!! She gave me such amazing advice, recommended products and even helped me get a hair routine down! Also, my color is PERFECT!! Sarah cuts and colors my hair to perfection, I been seeing her for @ least 5 years and she never lets me down. Lourdes has been giving me the best skin care advice for 2 years and my skin has never looked and felt better. Her massages are to die for also. I have been going to ulta for years to purchase cosmetics. I have always gotten help from the on floor staff with their suggestions and tutorials. I went in for eye shadow help and they had me make an appointment. (This was new). I made the appointment with the general manager. I was at my appointment for about 20 minutes. The gal was very helpful and I decided to purchased a few items she recommended. When I got to check out they charged me $30 for the make up help!! I was never told about this service being charged now. I told the cashier I've been coming into the door for years and I've never been charged for help. she said to call the manager, Which I did. It was the general manager who made my appointment and NEVER told me they now charge for their help. she said she would contact corporate and see if she could get me a refund. She called back the next day and said she was still waiting for an answer for me. It's now 3 weeks later and I've never heard back from her. I'm so disappointed. read more

My daughter and i scheduled an apt for my daughters Junior Prom 2 weeks ago for 11 am this morning. They called us at 10 a m and told us pretty much that its to bad the one stylist called in ill. I understand that people get sick. No attempt was made to assist her. REALLY! With prom no place can take her for her hair. Im sorry just doesnt help when you are counting on them for an important event. Junior prom is only once for a girl. No attempt to correct this at all even after i called and yelled. It was a couple days after the 60 days , so i should have been given a store credit, yet none was offered. The weekend manager told me to " give it away to someone". Really nice. Y'know, I'm a no-frills kinda gal and I normally purchase my makeup at the drugstore. However, after dealing with some cystic acne, I decided to look into other makeup. I first tried a mineral makeup sample from the 'web, but realized in horror that it oxidized hours later! That caused me to look closer at my regular drugstore makeup and, well, I clearly needed something different. I searched on the web and came up with a list, but still didn't seem sure where I should start. I had tried the local Sephora (at JCP) first, but there wasn't much selection nor help. Then I realized that Ulta was literally across the street, so I headed in with my list, began to browse, and then was helped by a friendly young associate. I told her what I was looking for (she also knew what "oxidized" meant), and she pointed out what she used as far as powder (Pur). When the shade that matched my skin tone wasn't in stock, she pulled out some more from their stock. She also gave me a sample of foundation (the Pur CC) so that I could try before I bought, since I wasn't sure ($30 foundation isn't quite cheap..). I didn't even know Ulta did that! Awesome! I LOVE my new Pur powder, and she's right - it hasn't oxidized on me. I'm not totally in love with the foundation, and am glad I didn't spend more money on a foundation that's just going to end up in the beauty bag. This was the most helpful trip to Ulta ever and has really decreased the intimidation factor for me! read more

I like the Ulta chain but this one....well first off, I get my hair done here and I have no complaints and get tons of compliments. Everyone is very nice etc.... My problem is any of their deals. I don't know if inventory isn't put into their system correctly or what but twice I've had to go back to get price adjustments. Its not a problem when I go back but just an annoyance. The last time I should have caught before I left the store but I was in a hurry, went back the next day and there was no problem. If they could fix this in their registers....this Ulta would be great. read more

Wow, what great customer service. I went from grumpy to glamorous in 3 minutes flat. Today I went into ULTA to buy those large bottles of shampoo which were on sale for $15.99 with my '20% your entire purchase' coupon in hand ready to to rock and roll. I got myself and my sister each several bottles, some pumps and a few other beauty items I was running low on. I was so excited about the fabulous sale and geeked that I had my 20% off coupon, that I totally neglected to read the tiny print on the coupon. I checked out and my total was upwards of $80. I proudly presented the cashier with my '20% percent off your entire purchase' coupon and braced myself for the tremendous savings which I was anticipating... ... my total went down by $2.73. I blankly stared at the tiny credit card swipey-screen and continued to wait for the big reveal... nothing. I flinched as I heard my glorious coupon torn in two from behind the counter and had my total re-presented to me a mere $2.73 less. *Gulp*. I'm not sure if it was my pregnancy hormones or I was just sick and tired of getting 'fine-printed' by da man, but I decided to take it up with the poor woman behind the counter. I asked why the 20% didn't come off and she replied that it did, but not off of the super sale/clearance items (i.e. my shampoo/conditioner bottles). Being an engineer, I looked her in the eye and did the math out loud. I calculated the savings off of the original price with the coupon vs. the sale price. Turns out, to my chagrin, that the sale price was, indeed, better. But I think that just the fact that they hit you in the face with these GIANT sale coupons and then, BOOM, the shampoo display right when you walk in to door, I felt taken advantage of. I got snippy (for which I'm totally embarrassed now), and told the woman, "Fine. Whatever, this is so sketchy but I guess it doesn't matter to you!" and stared to walk out the door. The sales associate apologized, insisted I stop, walk back over and she'd adjust the price for me on this occasion. She said that she could understand my frustration and that she didn't want me to leave the store upset. My sassy heart was a little warmed that she actually cared... SHE CARED! Wow. She adjusted my total and refunded me the 20% on the items that didn't ring up with the savings. I honestly regret my snippy comments and am so embarrassed that I acted like a total 'B', but can't express enough appreciation to the associate and the store for making me feel like I mattered. I admit that I will be reading all of the fine print on my coupons here on out, but wanted to share what a wonderful experience this trip to Ulta ended up being. read more

Great customer service! I went there yesterday because I have been squeezing every last drop of foundation from the tube and I don't think I'd make it through the weekend. Unfortunately the brand I was using reformulated their foundation and now I don't have a good match. So the hunt was on... Someone asked me if I needed help and I said I did. She said she was with someone at the moment but would get someone for me right away. Minute later.. I had an amazing person helping me out. I wish I remembered her name (I'm horrible with them).. I think it was Megan. Anywho! I explained my predicament and told her I want to keep it as natural as possible, not a ton of unneeded chemicals laying on my face all day. They had options! And none all too crazy expensive even on the "Prestige" side of the store. Once we figured out that, it was onto my next question.. and my next question. She was knowledgeable and confident in her answers which made me comfortable. She explained that if I get home and try it out and it just doesn't work (because lets face it everyone, it's not sunlight coming out of those light bulbs so things CHANGE), I could bring it back no problem. Got home, tried it out and it works great! Glad to see since I've moved I don't have to blindly make choices I am not comfortable making without more knowledge! Will definitely be shopping there again! Only downside - their coupons. They don't normally come off items qualified as a "Prestige" item - those higher expense make up things. Zero stars! What ever happened to basic customer service skills or simply treating others the way you want to be treated? Now a days consumers have options on where to spend their hard earned money...and when you chose to go out rather than buy online, you don't expect to get treated like you don't matter or worse, don't exist! Ulta in Mchenry, really needs to talk to their employees about basic courtesy and even invest in unconscious bias training. I had a very bad experience to say the least today while shopping for make-up. I won't go in to detail because bottom line, I was treated horribly, and when I addressed it, I was treated worse.... this is when the eye rolling and looks started; not by customers because I wasn't yelling or loud but I did have a tone expressing how disappointed I was with my experience ... but by the employees themselves.. not once did they apologize but rather defended their lack of basic courtesy skills.. to their defense the manager Apologized... but that didn't do much... I will never go back as I believe I know the reason for this treatment.. and I will take this further.. I have been going to Ulta in McHenry for around a year to a year and a half now. There have been two occasions that I have messed up my hair using boxed products and Becca came to the rescue. My first mess up turned my hair bright orange and I went to Becca and she fixed it! She knows exactly what colors to use to get you to what you were hoping for. My second mess up turned my hair pitch black, which on me looked horrible. Again, Becca to the rescue. I am not kidding you, she simply amazed me at how she fixed my hair. It was absolutely awesome!! Now she has my hair back to my natural dirty blond color and I cannot wait to go to my next appointment to get some lighter blonde highlights put in it for the upcoming summer months. I went to Ulta in Mc Henry and Katrina did my hair. It was color correction. My hair was bleached out, dry and I had an outgrowth of gray hairs. She listened to what I wanted and needed. I absolutely love this store. Whenever I stop by, I'm greeted with nothing but smiles and sincere greetings. I find the store to always be very well cleaned, and stocked with almost every beauty product I need. Whenever I need help with anything, they're always readily available. Mary is AMAZING at shade matching and got me on the first try, you honestly can't even tell I'm wearing foundation when it's on. Marianna and Kayleigh always go above and beyond to help and have given me lots of good guidance since I started shopping here. Also... their salon is amazing! I saw Mikala the other day for a haircut after a year of nothing being done to my hair. Now, I have curly hair and have never trusted a stylist to cut it correctly but it absolutely had to be done. I got to know Mikala a bit, and gave her the okay to chop off 6". My hair feels amazing and still looks cute curly AND I'm able to put it up! (My two requirements for a style). I would absolutely recommend both this salon and the store as a whole for anyone looking for anything beauty/self-care related. read more

This review is for Jennifer in their salon area. I was having a really bad day, and I walked in and met Jennifer. She listened to me vent as she waxed my eyebrows perfectly! She was so nice and completely brightened my day. She's also the only person in McHenry county that I have found who can wax my eyebrows as good as the girl I had back home (just moved to Mchenry 6 months ago). I was dyeing my hair for the first time and quite nervous about it. Ulta was wonderful! I had Katie specifically do my hair and she did a wonderful job. She was super nice, personable and really took the time and care to make sure I was getting what I wanted and doing what was best for my hair. The color result was amazing! I love this store, only negative is I use Urban Decay, and a lot of times they are out of stock on my eyeliner and shadow colors

First off, I would like to say that Mikaela who did my hair color did a "good" job. The reason for the two stars is because I have never been charged $280 for a color correction that was only done on the top part of my head!!!! The only reason why I went to Ulta is because they could get me in at last minute. I booked for a partial highlight which starts at $100 but they said they will just do a color correction and they said it would be cheaper so I was like "Okay. Awesome" It took 4 hours for the foil of bleach/root dye/toner to be finished. When she was done washing my hair, I was about in tears when I saw the state of my extensions. She bunched them up and they were badly tangled together. On top of that, parts of my extensions were falling out because she tugged on them too hard. I told her I would just finish my hair at home so I planned to leave the store with my hair still wet. When she told me the price, she told me it was $40 extra per hour. So for $280. It was not worth it. I called 20 mins after I left and told her to break it down for me so I could better understand why it was so much, she told me everything but the price for the bleach and it ended up coming to $270 on her end. So either way she overcharged me and can not get her numbers correct. I will never come here to get my hair done again. Complete rip off. Even the high end salon that I go to would never charge that much! read more

This store is 'ok'. The selection is vast and that is a plus. However, I find that it is hard to find an associate to help you and when you do, the odds of them being courteous and helpful are not good. There is one woman who knows the premiere makeup lines very well and was helpful the first time i asked her for guidance. Since then, she is rushed and I feel like she'll just thrust the nearest product into my hands and tell me to buy it. If Ulta was a discount makeup store I could understand having no help with navigating, advice on products, etc....but it's not a discount store! I still go there because of the selection but am consistently diappointed with the associates. Also, the sales push at the register for Ulta cards is pretty obnoxious. Extremely surprised by the negative reviews, I found this store to be exceptionally cleanly, well organized and well staffed. Which on that note; highly functioning and productive staff members at that! When you walk into a store it's not unusual to see employees, yet it is unusual for them to offer not only their assistance verbally but be quick to show you anything you have questions about, people love to point, but legwork is very rare these days. They also seem to have a lot more specials and clearance items than any other location I've visited, which if you buy Cosmetics or hair care products frequently you understand how pricey that can be. I truly had a wonderful experience at this location and recommend it highly to anyone living in or visiting the area. read more

this ulta is not unlike the ulta i have in my own hometown. i was visiting the area and needed some face wash STAT, though. i popped into ulta, and was not surprised to find it was just about identical to the store i am used to. it was a little disorganized. there seemed to be a little bit of everything all over the place. there were clearance items sort of discarded all over the store, left on different shelves. i'm willing to just chalk it up to being the day after thanksgiving, though. i'm sure things were crazy. however, when i walked into the store... there was literally me, a mother of two teenage girls, and a senior citizen. i remember the old lady because my husband asked why she was there. he assumed women stopped washing their faces or caring if they smelled good at a certain point, i guess. he's brilliant most days. i found what i wanted fairly easily, went to pay for it, and just wanted to be on my way. the girl behind the counter was having a conversation with another girl behind the counter, though, and that was pretty important i guess. this is probably like my number one customer service pet peeve. stop talking, gossiping, arguing, or making plans with the other person working the checkout while you are checking out my order. why? because you eff up my order. every time. that train is never late. and it wasn't on this day either. this girl had to re-ring my order. ask to see my card twice. ask for my address. have me spell my name a variety of times. it was ridiculous, and it was all because she was not engaged. there was one time when i actually wanted to just tell her to forget it. the face wash was literally $12, and the annoyance she was causing me was moving well into the $15-20 area. it was becoming worth less and less of my time. finally she got it right.... i walked out, and i will never walk in again. three stars for having what i wanted. two stars lost because your cashiers are more interested in talking to one another. read more

This Ulta locations is huge and has a great selection of all sorts of products. The reason why I am only giving this place 3 stars is because the staff isn't very nice and doesn't really know how to handle their customers. If you go into the store during the week while not many people are shopping you can find the staff scattered throughout the store gossiping in corners with no interest in helping the customer if/ when needed. read more

I was excited to bring my stepdaughter to this salon to get her hair braided on July 3. This was our first time using this Ulta. I was unimpressed that the women's room was disgusting. I told the staff it was out of paper, and no one even attempted to assist. Eventually the stylist had to go and clean the bathroom. I had arrived ten mins early and the stylist Heather was running 30 minutes late. I worked in retail for 9 years so I gave her the benefit of the doubt. I let it go after she did an amazing job with my stepdaughter! She was great! we got home and within the hour the rubberbands on her braids snapped, and the $100 braids were coming out. The salon had already closed so I had to buy rubberbands myself and fix them. I called after the holiday to speak to the salon MANAGER and they made the stylist call me which is incredibly unprofessional. It wasn't even the stylist that I has an issue with. We spent almost $200 here, and I wasn't even able to speak to a manager about our issue with her hair. We will not be returning here. read more
