ADA disability discrimination in full force…read more We had a beyond horrible experience this morning with the store manager. We are in town for a funeral and staying in Carrollton. We wanted some treats in the morning so we stopped into the store. I am disabled and use an individually task-trained service dog to assist me with my daily living activities. IMMEDIATELY when stepping into the bakery the manager said we cannot be in there with a dog. I cheerfully explained she was an ADA service dog who was fully vested and had service dog emblooms and tags on. (Because a service dog is recognized by law as a medical device for someone with a disability.) She said she didn't care, the dog wasn't allowed and we needed to leave. I said that we couldn't be refused service for having a service dog. She started yelling at me and my husband about how it didn't matter, that no pets were allowed. I explained she wasn't a pet and that it's a federal law to allow an ADA service dog to accompany me in any public space. She just kept yelling and then began screaming. Threw stuff down behind the counter, stomped off into the back, threw stuff back there. I stated taking a video to protect myself. She came back out, again, yelling and being discriminatory. I was firm, but calm (I know my rights as a disabled person). She didn't believe me and kept bullying me. That's what it was bullying. She kept saying how there were so many fake service dogs. I agreed, I empathized and told her how much I hated them too, and she kept yelling more. Still, not believing me. I stayed calm and stood there. Finally I said "I'm NOT legally required to prove it to you, but I can. I have her ID card. Do you want it?" She got really snotty and laughed and said "Yes, (prove it)". I told her that this is NOT an ADA requirement, but I'm happy to keep the peace. She was laughing at me, smirking. I handed her a federal register ID card. Her laughing stopped, she got mad and stomped into the back. Her coworker then realized my dog was a service dog and this was a learning opportunity. She became very willing to learn and asked me what she could do. I explained the two questions that could legally be asked about a service dog. I explained different types of service dogs. I explained ADA laws and how to uphold them and respect the handler. We talked about the extensive 18 months of training my dog went through, and so much more. The assistant even took notes. She ended up leaning a lot and was great. The manager was absolutely horrible. She went and called the owner who was horrible with my husband at first. He started rude and condescending. Told my husband WE needed training on the laws. Nope. We know them quite well, thank you. He even called my husband a jerk. A jerk! When my husband called him out he backpedaled and said he was taking about the health department guy. Hmm. In the end the owner came around, but, this was a MAJOR case of discrimination based on disability, harassment and violation of my rights. We've filled a complaint with the state attorney general.

I am responding to the review from Nicole H. on 4/27/2024. I was in the Betty Kaye Bakery at the…read moretime that this 'incident' occured, and I saw it with a different set of eyes than Nicole did. When I entered the bakery, I could see that she was berating one of the employees, who was trying desperately to communicate with her, but Nicole H. would not let her finish any response without butting in, and talking over her in a very combative manner. I was also there when the manager called the owner, who immediately talked with the man with Nicole H. It appeared to me that the conversation that the men had was civil and came to a decent conclusion. It also appeared to me that Nicole H. was enjoying every minute of HER condescending behavior, HER smirking, and HER poor aggressive to even witness a grown woman behave in such a way. Of the three in Nicole H.'s group, the dog, by far, was the best behaved. Nicole H. should also realize that the business is located in a rural farm community, where most residents own animals, so the manager/owner/employees are not new to animals. What that are new to is poor behavior, stinging accusations, and hostile threats. I would go to this business every day if I could, and I know that I would be treated just as I treat those who work hard there every day, with repect, gratitute, and appreciation.
