UHQ did a great job on replacing the siding on our chimney and fixing underlying structural issues.

    84 Lumber

I typically really dislike leaving a bad review when overall, the business treated me nicely…read more Unfortunately, after some contemplation, I look at this review as a "warning". We're having flooring installed on our home's entire main level. When our contractor got to our half-bath, they discovered mold underneath the sheet vinyl and we opted to have the existing subfloor removed and a new subfloor installed to give us more assurance that it would not recur. My contractor had a heck of a time locating the specific thickness of tongue and groove OSB that was needed and this 84 Lumber had it. My contractor made the call and gave me the approximate total of the items he wanted me to pick up while he was busy on another job. I showed the guy at the counter my list and he specifically said I needed treated OSB. I told him I didn't know but , very authoritatively, he said I did. After I paid and felt some sticker shock, he asked another manager where to find the treated OSB in the lumber yard. I overheard the manager say it was in bay 3. When the guy who rang me up took me out to the lumberyard, I was surprised that the OSB was in bay 1. As he loaded the OSB in my vehicle, I confirmed with him that, in fact, this was the treated OSB. He asked me what made me ask if it was treated. I replied that HE said I needed treated and the other manager said it was located in Bay 3. He responded that, yes, this was chemically treated OSB. Once my vehicle was loaded, I departed but made a fast food stop and took the opportunity to text my contractor that I obtained everything on his list but it was double what he told me it would cost. My contractor called me and asked how much every item on the list was and was shocked that I was charged $80 for the quoted $37 sheets of OSB. During the conversation, I explained that the guy who rang me up said I needed treated OSB and my contractor was upset because he felt I was being ripped off since this OSB was not being used outside and that would be the only reason I would need it. Contractor called 84 Lumber and spoke to the manager who told the guy who rang me up he remembered me and for me to come back and they would get me the cheaper OSB and refund the difference. I immediately went back and was re-rung by the manager and he took me out to the same bay that the first guy took me to. When I opened the hatch to my van and the manager looked at what the first guy gave me, it was discovered that while I was charged for the "twice the price" treated OSB, I wasn't actually given the expensive OSB but was given the cheap OSB. Once my contractor, his crew and my husband discovered this, they all felt no one working in a lumber yard doesn't know the difference between treated and untreated OSB. Also, the guy who rang me up was a manager in training. While I'd like to chalk this up to "error", even I knew something was wrong when he asked the other manager where to find the treated OSB and didn't take me to the location he was told and, as a "dumb woman", I knew there should be something that designated this as "treated", either in color or signage indicating so. Even when I brought it to his attention, he confirmed it as treated. I hate the thought that a business would intentionally be dishonest but it sure is looking that way. Women - know EXACTLY what you need and don't let the counter guy try to tell you in some authoritative way that he knows better. 84 Lumber - shame on you!

Beware if you are a woman visiting this store. My Filipino wife went to pick up 2 pieces of OSB…read moreflooring for an inside job. Our contractor specced the job and told her exactly what to get. The 'manager in training' at 84 convinced her she needed treated OSB... which she did not. But she believed him and purchased that wood at nearly double the price. And then the guy verified with another employee where the treated OSB was stored, but took my wife to a different bin and loaded up untreated wood instead. Honest mistake? You be the judge... but he stung her for $90. After our contractor heard about the charges he called up 84 and another manager made it right with us by refunding the overcharge - thankful for that. But you can't make me believe that a guy working at a lumber yard doesn't know the difference between treated and untreated wood, especially when he verified storage locations. Was my Asian wife targeted? That's a strong assumption... but we'll never ever purchase anything from 84 Lumber again.
