This is a fairly new review as this place has only been open for 2 days. The Rota/Puerto area is lacking in Japanese cuisine so the news of this restaurant has gotten everyone excited. Located in the Luz shopping center and plenty of parking available. The staff here are also nice. This review is to be taken it with a grain of salt since I come from the US.
My foodie partner and I sampled 8 dishes. We figured we probably would not be returning so might as well try as much as we can. We thought we had ordered too much but being that most of it was tapa portion, we weren't overwhelmed.
Our order:
Beef tataki
Pork bun
Mixed roll sampler
Negima Yakitori
Katsudon
Coral chicken yakisoba
Miso ramen
Curry Ramen
Beef Tataki - i didn't sample this but my husband said it wasn't bad - beef lightly seared with a little bit of teriyaki type sauce. He said he probably would not order it again given that the portion doesn't match the price.
Pork bun - we both thought this was good. The bao bun was nice and doughy and the pork was juicy. The sauce that was drizzled on it was good as well. We didn't care too much for the avocado that went with it but the flavors worked together. For the price of the pork bun, we felt that it could have either been bigger, or a serving size of two.
Mixed roll sampler - this was our least favorite. We thought the taste was bland.
Negima yakitori - (chicken) this was ok for us - the sauce was good.
Katsudon - this was a disappointment for us. For those who know katsudon, there is usually a bit of sauce that the rice soaks up and the egg is evenly distributed. UDON's take on the katsudon was more like rice topped with a fried pork cutlet and scrambled eggs on top. It tasted fine but it wasn't the katsudon we were hoping to get.
Coral chicken yakisoba - chicken was fried good. Not too dry - the noodles mixed with the sauce was ok. I felt like there was an ingredient missing but I can't pinpoint what it was. Overall, it tasted fine. Did not look like the picture but when does that ever happen ;)
Miso ramen - broth was ok, not salty - 2 tiny pieces of the chashu. The egg was a bit overcooked so it tasted. mushy. the noodles were cooked to the right temp.
Curry ramen - usually with curry ramen, we get a thicker broth. In this case, the broth was thin and just had added curried spices to it. Unfortunately, the egg was also overcooked. 2 very small and thin slices of chashu and lots of shitake mushrooms. For the price, i would have hoped to have a little more meat. I wanted to like this but my palette wouldn't let me.
we finished everything we ordered as we don't like wasting food and it wouldn't have been good if we wrapped up leftovers. We really wanted to like this place since there is a big demand for this type of cuisine (especially with the naval base population), but there wasn't anything we tried that would be enough for us to come back on our own. We left full, but not as satisfied as we hoped to be. To each is their own though, as I am sure that many others who will visit this place will have a better experience than us. Don't get me wrong though, we liked it, just not what we were expecting in terms of Japanese cuisine. We would not be opposed to dining here again if it was a group outing and this place was the chosen destination. read more
