I have looked for a good Traditional Karate school similar to the school I attended back east but have come up short. Finally I found Arizona Shotokan in Glendale and met the head instructor Tom Hyder. Mr Hyder was very friendly and polite I was impressed by his knowledge and instruction in Traditional Karate. I travel 2 hours round trip just to attend karate classes believe me there are tons of karate schools that I pass on the way there but none of these schools compare to the instruction taught at Arizona Shotokan. It's not just about paying tuition and attending a class they really are genuinely interested in helping you learn and improve. Plus all the students their have made feel super welcomed. I feel at home. They are also internationally recognized by one of the most traditional organization in Japan, Karatenomichi World Federation KWF. If you want to train in karate as they do in Japan this is the place to go to.

I've been able to maintain my weight, have excellent balance, and of course, feel a bit more confident about getting myself safely out of a bad situation. What I've really loved is the appropriate level of discipline and self control they are asserting on the kids. I love the 'yes sir, no sir', and they know my kid well enough now to know when she's faking a potty break and when it's really an issue. They never let the kiddos accept anything other than their best shot. They do especially well with new kids and usually assign one teacher to a new kid -- there can be a lot of tears as for some little guys, this is their first activity out of the safety of their home. It does seem pricey to me at $130/month (the pricing can be lower if you lock into a time commitment -- we go month to month) but you can attend as many classes as you would like at this price. So you can really make it worth your money. And if karate is something your child wants to commit to, it's a total bargain.

I have 2 kids on spectrum who I'm always nervous can't stay on task like the typical kids, or who may look different. Everyone is appreciated for their hard work. There is no criticism, there is always praise, recognition and corrections are done in a discrete private way so kids don't even feel like they're doing things "wrong". Karate dave is a kid whisperer! Heck he's a people whisperer, the kids and parents can't help but hang on every word and direction he gives. He's stern but fun and he "sees" each kid, and the kids recognize that. He makes connections with them that come so natural to him. You can tell that he is all about the kids. I love listening to my kids being taught integrity, responsibility and self control. I currently have 3 kids enrolled and we are going on 2 months loving it! There are tables for parents to sit at, or chairs around whole mat. They welcome parents to help kids or hold up sparring mits for kids.
