We booked a tour with UCC and had a great visit. We learned about the coffee plant, roasted coffee, and packaged it. It was informational and hands on. They even custom packaged our very own bags of coffee! That was a nice touch. We had a cup of latte before leaving and it was the best we have ever had. I have many memories of this place. It's a must see, if you love coffee. They have yummy chocolate covered coffee bean. Delicious coffee ice cream! The beast of everything that's coffee. They have the first and only cracked coffee. They crack the bean and blow of the light membrane in the middle that is known to give a bitter taste. Thrust, creating the best and unique coffee around. They also have the best staff members. Helpful and love there jobs. I remember meeting Peggy Stevens, UCC Production Manager, 10 years ago. She was so much fun to talk to. I think she is the reason why I love the UCC so much. Having the right staff for your business is so important. The first time we met, we were in the Kona newspaper together. UCC is a popular coffee shop in Japan. Admittedly, I had never heard of the company, but I know that coffee is taken seriously in Japan so I figured it's worth checking out. Kim and I did the Roastmasters experience, which began with a short tour of the coffee plantation. Turns out that UCC's Kona coffee is not sent to UCC cafes in Japan; the only way you can get it is by visiting the Kona facility or by mail-order. In any event, we were able to see the coffee plants up close. They are beautiful. The coffee is tasty, too! The tour ended with a roasting experience. Kim and I roasted our own batches of dried green coffee beans. The experience was fun, albeit a bit pricey. The drive up to the facility is also quite nice. I recommend this experience for anyone who loves coffee. read more

Did the tour and coffee roasting on Friday, March 16th. The gentleman who greeted us and did the tour was friendly and knowledgeable. I didn't catch his name. The free samples are delicious and the coffee is so smooth. Lilly did the roasting and she was funny and insightful. It was easy to see the different variations of roasting and Lilly helped ensure the beans came out the exact way requested. She even recommended the slow motion video method when filming the inside of the roasting container. We just tried our coffee at home and it is as wonderful as theirs at the farm. Great experience! We sampled the coffee, and then bought a tote bag, macadamia nuts, and so.e drinks. I had an iced coffee float, which was delicious! The hubby had Affogato....ice cream with espresso. That was amazing! We walked through their orchard (which is FREE! Unlike that pretentious place up the road). The orchard is beautiful and very well taken care of, and you can tell a lot of love goes into it. We saw honey bees (the trees were in bloom), beautiful song birds...they look like large Charles, and there were even some wild turkeys roaming around. The staff was very friendly and also very knowledgeable. Overall it was a wonderful experience. I would recommend it to anyone looking for that authentic Hawaiian experience. read more

My son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, and I went on the Roast Master tour of UCC-Hawaii, while we were on the Big Island and it was one of the highlights our vacation to Hawaii. I am an avid coffee drinker so it sounded like a lot of fun to take the Roast Master tour. Peggy Stevens was our guide, and as much fun as the tour was, she was so personable and knowledgeable that she made our tour even more fun. She gave each of us 8 oz. of green Kona coffee beans as she provided the details of what we would do while we were on the tour. She asked each of us to choose the intensity from a chart that she showed us (from green beans past light, through cinnamon, medium all the way to Italian, which was the most robust). We then created our own personalized labels that would be applied to both of our bags of coffee as we completed the process. She showed us how the roasters worked and all of the safety equipment that we would be using. She explained that she'd let us know when we had roasted our green coffee beans until they got to the "pop stage" (sounds like popcorn popping). We had each chosen 4 different intensities of coffee. You can tell that Peggy has done this a lot because she got each of our intensities spot on and she did it listening to how quickly the coffee beans popped. When she told us to remove our beans from the roasters, we immediately put the roasted, still popping, coffee beans on top of a fan and stirred the beans quickly to cool the beans. Flakes were blown out of the square wooden frames that had screens on the bottom as we stirred our coffee beans. Next, we poured our finished coffee beans into two 4-oz. bags that had our labels already affixed to them and then she showed us how to use the sealer. It was fun going through the Roast Master tour; however, Peggy made the tour even more fun. She gave us all sorts of tips that we never knew as we roasted and then cooled our coffee beans. As we wandered around the gift shop, Peggy gave each of us a small cup of Kona ice cream that she makes. She said the ice cream was such a hit that she now provides the ice cream to many businesses around the Big Island. I love coffee ice cream so I get it whenever I find an ice cream stand or restaurant that offers it; however, Peggy's ice cream is much better than any coffee ice cream I have ever had!! Even my daughter-in-law, who does not like coffee, liked the ice cream! Since Kona coffee is such a big deal, the SO and I decided to take a tour to UCC and participate in their Roastmaster Tours where we got to roast our own special batch of Kona coffee. Veronica showed us the coffee beans before we got to roasting and then she demonstrated the technique which was essentially kept the beans turning in the heated canisters (can't think of a better word for them). Then we would stick the wooden spoon in periodically to check on the color and then once done, we poured the beans out into a cooling rack so the beans could cool off before they were bagged. Go there for a scheduled guided tour to go down the kona coffee farm. Drink their sample coffee and get a cool burlap bag. They also have coffee ice cream too. Then, after the nice walk down the farm and all these consumption, you should be ready and good to go for a run on that toto seat. Adjust the pressure and strength of dat steam of gentle water going up your who-ha. They even got a dryer to help you out. Hey, congratulations! You have just experienced the best wipe you would probably get on the island. Have I mentioned toto seats go for couple hundreds up to thousands of u.s. of a. Dollars? We have gone to a number of coffee farms while in the Kona area, but this was our favorite. We roasted our own coffee beans and they packaged them for us with custom labels with our pictures. They were very knowledgeable about the whole process. We were also given a 4 oz cup of the coffee ice cream, and it was delicious, smooth and creamy. I recommend reservations if you're interested in roasting your own. We arrived without reservations but lucked out because they had some time before the next group. They have 10 roasting containers which are from 1909. You pick the level of darkness you prefer. We each chose to roast the extra large (4 bags, 4 oz each). We roasted some according to our preference (French roast) and 4 bags a little lighter for gifts. We spent a total of about an hour there. It was a delightful way to spend the morning and a unique experience to remember. Don't pass up this opportunity to roast your own coffee beans! Come here people for a great lesson in coffee and roasting! I'm familiar with UCC growing up in an Asian community but I was surprised how 80% of their visitors are from Japan. Thought more people would know about them. There was even a UCC cafe near my house in the L.A. area before it changed owners. We went up to their clean store front. It's a two-room location with a few acres of coffee taking up most of the land. Look for the UCC sign when you're driving along. Can't miss it. We went in and asked for a tour. We turn to one side of the first room and there were free samples of coffee (hot and iced). You can sip them in little UCC cups. So adorable! We signed up for the custom roasting package for 1/2 lb of coffee with your picture and label on it. We got a lesson in coffee on their fields. We went inside to start roasting our 1/2 lb of beans. We even took a picture outside to show the label to our family and friends. They were really informative and to top the visit, we got to try their coffee ice cream for free. Ahh where can I buy this? I don't think you can get it anywhere but their location. Sooo good! Not too heavy but definitely has the coffee taste in the ice cream. June was our guide and she was great! The coffee tasting is served on REAL china cups, and you can even get a sample of their iced coffee. Delish Its a small tasting room but very friendly staff. Superb coffee in a hospitable, beautiful location with spectacular views. We went here on a tip from one of Greenwell's employees who has been brilliant at suggesting alternatives when they've been out of their signature Private Reserve. The UCC Estate Reserve is of comparable quality (ie, the highest) and it combines the mild floral notes that are the signature of a classic Kona roast. While visiting we got to meet Makoto Ikeda, one of the judges in the just concluded Kona Coffee Cupping Contest. While we did not roast our own blend (I love the concept) this was definitely a "must return" for me for the quality of the coffee, the informative and relaxed interactions with the staff, and the spectacular setting. read more
