Been using Uber regularly with generally good results, which is good since my first experience was horrible and I could not even get the Uber App to recognize where I was (919 N Michigan Avenue). There are a lot of EMI issues with all the network transmitters in that area, and I've heard of many GPS systems not returning the correct locations, so providing exactly where you are is the best way to use Uber. Tips for a good Uber Experience: Where ever you are, if you can, use the texting facility. This way at least YOUR communications will provide your exact address. Too often, especially around the Magnificent Mile area, the GPS provides false locations especially when you use an APP versus texting. Be mindful of the time you are requesting service. Uber uses a "supply v demand" pricing rate which means that if you are requesting an Uber Car during peak demand periods, you will get a car but your rate will be higher. In contrast you can call a cab and you may end up waiting a very long time if it is rush hour, and especially if the weather is lousy but your rate will be the same. If you can avoid "rush hour" you can probably avoid hitting the higher rates range. If you Text, you will receive a request soon after your Uber ride ends, to 'rate your driver.' I've only had one driver I really could not stand. This is a good opportunity to let them know if they have a real louse in the house. My one crappy Uber call experience was when I had to go down to Michigan Avenue for a project, and had several shopping bags that I did not want to be schlepping around since they were heavy. I texted Uber and waited, and waited, and waited. Finally I called the driver (when you text, they text the driver's mobile number to you). He said, "I'm at the Westin, can you walk over?" SERIOUSLY. There are 3 Westin Hotels in the Magnificent Mile and downtown Chicago area. I cancelled the request, dragged my stuff over another street where I could sit down, and put in another request which came fairly quickly from another driver. The driver and the experience was so pleasant that I quickly forgot my first aggravation. Uber is not perfect, but there are times when having the convenience of requesting a car and not having to deal with payment or cash is worth the price. If you need to take Limo service frequently for work events, this is a great alternative if your trip needs to be downtown, and less costly. I did have one exceptional Uber experience. I had to go down to the Mag Mile area for more project work, where I need to go to a couple of the stores and do consumer analytical work. I happened to mention to the driver that I was going 2 stores and hoping to leave the area right away. It turned out that on a whim, I went into another store but for personal shopping. When I went to text Uber, I found a text from the Uber driver who drove me downtown. He said that I had left my key case in the back. Usually the drivers look to make sure you don't leave anything, but the case was a dark color and I had gotten out of the car very quickly. He wanted to know where I was so he could drop my keys off to me, and had turned down an Airport request because he knew it would have delayed my getting my key case back. read more

Waive down a potentially smelly, dirty cab with a weird driver asking me very personal questions which are none of his business OR B. Send for an Uber Cab which is always super clean, convenient (I like a car waiting at the door), and the drivers are always friendly. Uber is the best thing that has happened to us! It is so nice to be able to call for a car and not have to fight for cabs. We love using this for weddings and special occasions as well because the vehicles are always impeccable and the service is great. I love that it automatically charges your credit card and tip is included. I know that it is a law in Chicago for cabs to accept credit cards but that law is far from perfect and does not stop cabbies from giving you a hard time about it, making up some lie about their machine being broken, or simply rolling their eyes at you when you want to use a credit card. The black cars are great. But, where Uber really shines is with it's taxi service. Let me paint you a picture: My typical Friday/Saturday used to look like this: Sitting on my couch around 8pm. Phone starts going off with the night's plans. Looks like we're going to River North, tonight. Solid. Hop off the couch. Open Spotify. Queue up playlist "Feelin' Myself". Walk out of the bathroom, fully dressed. Check my room. Check myself out in my room mirror. Go back to bathroom, re-adjust hair once more. Okay, done. Head to hallway. Grab faux-leather jacket w/ the hood. Jacket's on. Hood's up. Check myself out in hallway mirror. Everything's looking good! Ego's on 10. Switch playlist to phone. Pop in headphones. Walk out the door. Head to corner to flag down cab. First empty cab with the light on passes me by. Oh. Right. It's dark, Marvin. You're black and wearing a hood. Take off hood, next cab passes me up. *swears internally to myself* Ego has now dropped 3 pts. Open jacket to reveal non-threatening button-up. I'm also cold now. Third cab finally stops. I'm off for the night. With less of a good start than I intended. Post on Facebook and Twitter about cabbie racism and annoy friends. ***NOW WITH Uber:*** The night goes pretty much the same, except that now.. between the 2nd and 3rd bathroom stop to fix my hair, I pull up the Uber app and set my location. I arranged for a pick up at my home at 4:30 AM to board a 6:00 AM flight leaving from Midway Airport. I received an email from Uber confirming that the driver would pick me up between 4:15 and 4:30 AM. The email also confirmed the amount of the fare. The car never showed up. Almost missed my flight. I am not sure how long it has been since I tried setting up an Uber account to be used with a computer, but I have yet to succeed. I have had countless messages from alleged Uber Help that they are going to solve the problem, but that hasn't happened yet either. In fact, they disappeared. Some months back, I tried to sign up via the Uber site and using the Promo Code METRACOMMUTE, but I kept receiving error messages, so I gave up. About a month ago, I found that there was a different looking sign up page on the Uber site, so I tried that. After filling it out, I was given the message that an account already existed using that phone number and email address. I clicked on the Forgot Password option and I received a message that a text code had been sent to me. I did not receive a text code via email or my phone. I supplied this information to the alleged Uber Help via their site and Facebook. I kept getting messages back that made it appear that whoever was responding did not understand English. They keep addressing me as "Sagar"! Also, I was asked for screenshots of the error messages. There was no error message because advising me that an account already existed is not an error message. I also informed them that I did not have a smart phone. They ignored that too and asked for a screen shot to be sent from my phone in order to prove it was my number. Finally, I stated that they were supposed to send a text message to me, and I was informed that they could not do that. If the over site of the drivers is the same as the over site of their customer service, I am probably lucky that I can not set up an account. ADDITION: Today, I sent a copy of this Yelp review to Uber. This is the response. "Hi Sagar, In order to investigate further, would request you to elaborate your concern and share some more details like trip date and time. Awaiting your response." This is either an auto response or they do not understand English. August 8, 2018 I advised whomever or whatever I was corresponding with at Uber that I was going to file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General's Office if they didn't cancel the two accounts that Uber claims have been created using my phone number and two of my email addresses. I received an email promoting the Uber EA SPORTS on 9/26/16. I followed the directions, and at 11am I started clicking the GAME ON button. Finally after over 100 tries I received a CONFIRMATION. The confirm said the delivery of my free video game would arrive in 5 minutes, but it never did. I email their support which was not helpful at all. They replied as if they'd never read my email at all. I even sent them pictures of the screen shot of the confirmation page, still nothing. SHAME on you Uber. read more

Love Uber :) Only giving four stars because a few times I've had to either show the driver how to get to where I'm going or they've handed me their phones and asked me to put it in for them. I did have a driver named Adley who was super sweet! He picked me up in an UberXL car but only charged me the UberX rate because he was the only car in the area. I had forgotten my wallet at home while at the grocery store. Adley drove me home, back to the store, then back home again. He charged me 12.44 for what should've probably been about $20.00 and even more because we were in the UberXL car. He also offered to help me with my groceries. What a great guy! read more

Uber is my preferred method over taxi, for sure. But you have to be smart about it... you are given the drivers photo, car description and license plate... double check before you enter the car that all match up. I also love that I can send a family member my route and they can watch on their mobile device the GPS of the car... MUCH safer than taxis. And, I love the fact that you know how much the ride will be prior to accepting and there is no money exchanged, which always makes me nervous. Overall, I feel much safer in the transparency Uber offers rather than taxis. I have only had one bad apple, who just took me on a much longer ride and it cost more than my estimate... I was instantly shown that he took "the long way" and an email to the customer service resulted in an immediate apology and refund. I LOVE Uber. I have had NO problems with my local cab company, but you just can't beat the convenience and price of Uber. Simply put, you pull out your smart phone, put in a request, and bingo, you can see the location of the driver who is picking you up. He or she shows up, then he or she gets your destination information, and off you go. Their navigation tool takes you to the exact location. I have never had a "bad" driver. Some are quiet, but, those who choose to converse are usually quite interesting. I had one driver, Steve, let me charge my phone during the trip. Attempt to fraudulently collect a cleanup fee! On Sunday morning, I requested an Uber to drive me home to Bolingbrook IL from Chicago, IL (approx. North & Wells). The ride was about 1 hour long, at which i essentially had conversation with the driver the whole time. I can tell you that he has a son on the way, that is 18 months apart from his first child. He was a lawyer in his home country and is looking for paralegal work in the states, his wife is a practicing lawyer that he met in his grad school program, and that he lives in the city now, but are planning to move back to Schaumburg, IL where his wife is from. Anyhow, during this ride, I am completely aware and in control of all of my "facilities". (I was hosting clients and this was not an appropriate time to "tie one off"). Driver drops me off, and we're all good. Until...Sunday Afternoon when i get a message from Uber saying that my $60+ ride is being charged an additional $150 for a cleanup fee. I take to the Uber app to contest as this may be an honest error. Uber and I proceed to exchange messages where at one point they provide a picture of what looks to be vomit on the floor of a car. I immediately call out the picture (looked to be leather seats and I know this Camry did not have leather seats) and proceed to ask what Uber does to authenticate the picture (pre/post incident pictures of the car, time stamps etc...). I also threaten to report this to the Better Business Bureau as this is fraudulent activity on either Uber or the driver's account. Uber eventually agreed to remove the charge, however, I just spent my Sunday afternoon contesting this charge not to mention the work implications as this was charged to my company's Uber account...additionally I actually gave the driver 5 stars after the ride! It was a horrible experience and I hope that there are some sort of repercussions for the the driver or whoever is responsible for this attempt to defraud a customer. I'd like to know and understand what the repercussions of the incident were. Uber refunded the cleaning fee "after further review". However, during my interaction with them, they provided a picture of vomit in the vehicle. I want to believe this was an honest mistake, but the driver said i was his last ride so it cannot be someone that was after me. I and the driver also would have known if I were sitting in a car full of puke. So it leads me to believe that this was an attempt to defraud a customer with a "planted" or fake pic. read more

I ordered Chinese food from New Grand Chinese Kitchen on 54th & Wentworth Dec 22nd. I used uber eats to delivery my food. I spent approximately $26 on my dinner. The driver was great, the food horrible and burnt. The egg foo young was burnt, the orange shrimp burnt and the beef fried rice was dry. Uber eats failed to compensate me for my troubles. It was money flushed down the toilet. This is the holiday season, I can't afford to waste money. But that's exactly what happened last night. Uber eats never acknowledged my complaint. Buyer beware! Do not buy Uber gift cards! The card I received as a gift could not be used for a trip, and Uber customer service refuses to apply the card to my trip or to issue a refund. Buying an Uber gift card amounts to a donation to Uber. I have sent 24 requests to Uber customer service requesting my card be applied to my trip or I be issued a refund, and I have been told no 24 times. Do not buy an Uber gift card! I do not normal take cabs when I travel as I usually just rent a car. Since it was supposed to snow badly when I was in Chicago, I decided to cab it this time. I was alittle worried being able to get a cab back from UIC to my hotel and was told about this app. It was great! It took alittle bit to get my first cab using the app(trip to UIC) ~15mins but it was fairly painless. My second use of the app(Trip back to hotel from UIC) took alittle longer as it was around rush hour. The app couldn't find any taxis near by so I had to change to the Black Car option. It cost alittle more but I got a car. I am all about convience so price was not as much as in issue to me than to some of the other reviewers here. Payment and tips were all charged to my cc by the app and the receipt is emailed to you. Also once you receive an confirmation from cabbie/limo driver, you can follow the icon of that car on the app so you will know how far away it is from your current location. For a newbie taxi rider, this app made the whole process painless and easy. For experience taxi-riders, this app may not be for you. This app will be one that is always on my iphone. It does lose a star as I did get worried when the app couldn't find any cabs or black car near by and it took 15-20mins to finally get an confirmation. read more

Though I've had a variety of different experiences with UberX drivers, they've all been pretty great. This is especially considering the alternative options available in Chicago--such as the CTA (more specifically: crowded trains and late/no-show buses) and Chicago taxis. Why would anyone choose to wait and ride a CTA bus when they can hire a private driver for a couple bucks more? I'm honestly surprised to read the negative reviews here, because the drivers I've experienced (around 7 different drivers now) have all been professional, prompt, good drivers, and otherwise provided a safe, superior alternative to getting around in the city. I'm so happy to have found Uber--I figured their prices would be competitive with taxis, but seeing that they're often cheaper than a bus ride (when my wife and I take a bus with transfer, it costs $6 on my Ventra card) I plan on using Uber on the regular. No longer will I be forced stand on crowded, disgusting city buses or be told that the credit card machine JUST broke and I have to pay cash for my dreadful taxi ride! I had used uber a few times before, but am completely appalled by the rip off surcharge during peak hours and New Year's Eve. I got charged over 100 dollars for less than four miles. I understand it was peak hours, and I may have been drinking making it my fault. But in all honesty it is ridiculous. It was snowing ridiculously and freezing out. I honestly feel completely taken advantage of with uber. I trusted service as someone visiting from out of town. And regret using this service. I am te type of person who is really big on customer service. Being that I am living in NYC and take cabs and cars all the time, it would be safe to say it takes quite a bit for me to be disgusted with a transportation service. DO NOT use uber. My very frustration with this company who suppose to provide transportation. Unfortunately this service that I have been receiving in the city of Chicago is unacceptable. This first thing that I have a problem with are these ridiculous so called policies for example the cancellation fee, why is it that when the driver cancels the ride when the customer have to be force to pay $5 dollar cancellation fee, which I feel is completely unnecessary. But when ask for a refund you give a credit, here a note: No one wants a credit, when want a full refund when ask and when its fair. Wanting to not rent a car for my entire trip to Vegas I thought I'd taxi a few days until I picked up my rental car. Would give 5 stars but I haven't experienced Uber in the Chicago area. Doesn't sound all happy but perhaps it's the passengers not understanding the terms of Uber black cars. I did however use it the first time in Nov 2015 in Vegas after 3 solid no shows of 3 different taxi companies 3 different times. Ended up walking to my destination . twice and once took the bus. When I called one the Vegas cab companies to find out why they were not showing, they (the dispatchers) treated me like a prison inmate even though initially they told me it was a 10 min wait time and it was about an hour & half later while I was waiting so I tinkered on my phone with reviews of the 3 different cab companies I called and read reviews about Uber. (Ok so I live in the dark ages, I just found out about Uber, Ok?) I can't imagine a more perfect experience with the Uber drivers I had. It's really added a comfort to me knowing I can get on my phone and get an Uber driver. At least I'm assuming I can as easily as I did in Vegas. If the taxi drivers hadn't been no shows, I would never know about Uber and wow, what a great price for a clean car and personable driver! I may stop renting cars too. Cab companies are now a thing of the past with me and maybe rental cars will be too? But car rentals have always delivered as promised, unlike cab companies. Toodles cab companies!
