Very Disappointed, Concern About Coercive Billing Practices, not care provided. I am extremely disappointed with my experience at UAB St. Vincent's Women's Health. My daughter had a scheduled appointment on October 8, 2026. When we arrived, we were told that her appointment would not proceed unless we immediately paid a charge from a September 23 Emergency Room visit. The problem was not that I was unwilling or unable to pay a legitimate medical obligation. The problem was that I had not even received the bill or an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from my insurance showing what I actually owed. Despite that, payment was presented as a condition for my daughter's scheduled medical appointment to proceed. I ultimately paid the amount because I was not willing to risk my daughter losing her scheduled medical care. I paid under the pressure created by the possibility that her appointment would not proceed, not because I had been given a bill, an insurance determination, or a reasonable opportunity to review the charge. No bill had been received. No EOB had been received. I was not first given an opportunity to review the alleged balance, discuss it with billing, speak with a financial counselor, or establish a payment arrangement. To me, this goes far beyond ordinary billing. Using a patient's scheduled medical care as leverage to obtain immediate payment of a charge that has not yet been billed or adjudicated by insurance is coercive behavior. I believe patients should be able to receive their insurance determination and an actual provider bill before being pressured to make immediate payment, particularly when payment is being demanded at the front desk as a condition of proceeding with scheduled medical care. I have submitted this matter as a formal grievance and am pursuing all appropriate state and federal regulatory and administrative avenues to have the circumstances independently reviewed. My concern is not about paying a legitimate medical bill. My concern is the method used to obtain payment and the pressure placed on us by tying payment to my daughter's scheduled medical care. Definite violation of their own so called patient bill of rights. Patients deserve transparency, reasonable billing practices, and respectful treatment, not to feel that they must pay an unbilled charge immediately or risk losing scheduled medical services. I would strongly encourage anyone dealing with a similar situation to carefully document what they are told, request the bill and insurance EOB, and understand their rights before making payment under pressure. The legal recourses to file a complaint are few and far in between and you really have to search for state and federal agencies for these complaints. read more

I came here for an emergency with pregnancy to the ER. They took blood and messed up so they had to take it again. To only be sent to my OB where I basically got kicked out instead of waiting there to receive a shot I needed. I then was sent to the OB emergency department where I sat and waited for 4 hours and had to get new bloodwork to wait on because it's a "different" department. It's all been a nightmare to deal with. We are defiantly just a number a cash sign at this hospital. read more

Doctor Rodriguez is a know it all that doesn't take into account all the extenuating circumstances behind medication and then takes you off medication that you've been on for years that throws you into instant withdrawal. He almost killed me taking me off of my small dose of clonzepam! On top of that, he told my mother that I had an overdose whenever that was the furthest from the truth I just simply taken my Seroquel before I went to the hospital therefore, I see out of it that I had overdose, especially my mother - that's a HIPPA violation! The pictures below are what you get when you are discharged. Along with that you get a print out from WebMD on general care. Drove three hours to have a surgery scheduled with Dr. Beckham and it was a nightmare. One of his pupils repaired a fissure after diverticulitis and 2 months of no bowel movements that left me resorting to ERs up north not doing anything to help until at near month three all the laxatives started working and the fissure formed with two large hemorrhoids. After Dr. Conner repaired the fissure and five umbilical hernias from being impacted and straining i was referred to Dr. Beckham to see where my bleeding was coming from. Turns out the fissure had an abscess form that his former student missed. I asked to stay overnight after the surgery because I have problems with my bowels after anesthesia. I was four weeks off my hernia repair and this was told to Dr. Beckham and Anesthesia when they came into preop. I also have long term chronic pain treated with opiates and I asked to have a nerve block so I would have to rely on the opiates for pain relief. I stressed this because they severely constipated me causing all these surgeries. The nerve block would also help in healing but no one knew how to do it. Literally what anesthesiologists are trained to do but no luck. So, I arrive in the OR see the large orange gummies they say I'm going to be laid face down on and I said I just had hernia surgery but they didn't listen or care. FFW to the recovery room, my left and right side are in pain as well as my lower chest, and my throat is all scratched up, my tongue looks like I chewed on it, my jaws are killing me and it's no big deal to them. Except I've never had a breathing tube and felt so bad afterwards. About two hours after I was in the room the pain really set in and I asked for something to help with the pain. My left flank was and is still constantly hurting with spikes in pain after using the bathroom or eating. None of my meds are called in to be given except for a couple pain meds. I stayed miserable all night in pain because the opiates don't work anymore. Hence why I asked for the nerve block, but they do dull it a little so something is better than nothing. I voice concerns I'm not able to pee, ask for some flomax, and it takes till the next day to get it. I start feeling constipated and when I finally get the doctor there, "it's your fault if the opiates constipated you, you shouldn't have asked for them," RIGHT I SHOULD JUST SIT IN MORE MISERY BECAUSE YOU REFUSED A NERVE BLOCK IN FAVOR OF GIVING ME OPIATES! I WAS DISCHARGED STILL HAVING CHEST PAIN, SIDE HURTING, TESTICLES FEELING LIKE THEY ARE BEING KICKED AND NO ONE WALKED ME OR WHEELED ME OUT OF THE HOSPITAL. ( Remember when you thought it was silly they had to wheel you out? Yea that is every single hospitals policy because if you hurt yourself they are liable.) I will see him for a follow up in two weeks and then never again. I didn't mention i had an accident in the bed they left me sitting in for over twenty minutes. All out terrible experience and doctors who don't read charts or listen to patients. If you use them just do as they say and don't say a word. That's how they like it. Update: The person that wanted me to reply gave me the "we reviewed the case and nothing changes." This is what they do, you get subpar care and get a sorry we did that conversation back. This type of care is why so many people fear getting care, and hospitals and providers get away with it. They know when they screw up it doesn't matter because nothing happens, no repercussions are imposed to correct their behavior and make sure appropriate care is given. The night before I drove home after being discharged I had a reaction that developed late and caused my throat and breathing to close to the point I had to get out of bed and find an urgent care which took me in quickly and gave me an epi injection just from looking at me they Knew I was having a reaction. I am also running a fever, and my surgical site is draining yellowish liquid and blood, which means I probably have an infection. I was given antibiotics during surgery for the infection the surgeon was draining but not even a low dose course to make sure it didn't come back quickly. My primary care doctor is working me in tomorrow morning and having the practices general surgeon look me over. I called my doctors office and left a message after hours and my PCP called me back personally. My pain management doctor is also working me in tomorrow to give me an injection to help manage the pain in my lower extremities so I don't have to take constipating pain meds and to get me to a more invasive procedure for long term relief. This is how medical care is supposed to be, not the kind you get where you are an inconvenience to be delt with quickly. P.S. My friend was having chest pain started Sunday 03/15 Monday morning took her to Oak Grove fire department they did EKG it was normal they didn't have a ambulance available, so I drove her to UAB St Vincent emergency another EKG and blood work, back to waiting area set 2.5 hours they did more for a homeless person and told her to leave the hospital no shoes in a snow storm we finally left and came home. My sister recently had spinal surgery at this St. Vincent's location; and she received excellent care from the doctor's, nurses, and all other staff assigned to get her better. Thank y'all for taking such great care of her! I would specifically like to thank the folks who work in the food service part of the hospital. Hospital food is usually super bland and texturally horrible. I don't know who's cooking at St. Vincent's but the food that came for all 4 meals she was served was spectacular! The first meal was teriyaki chicken with real fresh grilled pineapple and sautéed or steamed FRESH vegetables. The second meal was tender beef tips with gravy over perfectly cooked and seasoned rice along with...again, FRESH cauliflower that had been steamed or roasted and was perfectly seasoned. Before we left the next day, the lovely food service staff brought a delicious homemade beef ziti with a delicious tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese paired with again, FRESH mixed vegetables. All the food had great texture and was perfectly seasoned. As the owner of a catering business, I know how difficult it is to do this with large format cooking. Y'all did an excellent job!! And, yes...I was not the patient, but my sister did share her meals with me because she was also amazed at how great the food was! GREAT JOB! read more

On March 29,-31, 2026. I Judy Williams-Hill was transported by ambulance pre my request. After arriving greeted by a black gentleman that was very nice, he said someone will be with you shortly, and do you need anything. I said need to use the restroom he showed me where it was, and I never saw him again my entire stay. After using the restroom, now I'm here by myself waiting on my family to arrive. I go sit down on the bed, my family comes walking in, they come over to the bed where I was sitting, and we embrace one another. Shortly after that a RN walks in by the name of Suzan on 5 west, with her student, and greets me. Suzan ask for a list of my medications, allergy, then she asked me what I take for pain? I said Tylenol her response that's all you take for pain, me yes, then she said if you need something for pain that's the only thing that you will take, me yes! I didn't state why I was rushed to the hospital, because I had fluid around my heart. Then Suzan asked me to count backwards 20-1, I said for what, she repeated herself so I went on and did it next I need you to say the month of the year backwards, me for what? I never mentioned my age, I am 66 years old in good shape work out five days a week sharp mind , and this bully nurse is messing with me. I have congestion heart from chemotherapy 23 years ago, not from mistreating my body. Then Suzan tells me she need check your skin, I say for what? Her response was nothing. The next thing I know Suzan pick up the phone, and ask a nurse to come down to the room, because she need to check my skin. When the nurse comes in the room we speak, and she says I know you, and I say I know you. Then she said I put your iv in the last time you was here, me you sure did. Then she said how nice I am, I said thank you. Then Suzan say to the other nurse I need you to go on the other side of the bed, and said to me I need you to turn over on your side, me for what? I need to check your skin, now she looked at my legs, and nothing wrong with them now I need to turn over on my side. Suzan yes, and do you want these people to leave out the room, me no the majority of them have the same them I have, but one person, and he seen all of it. So I turn over on my size and this bully nurse Suzan pull down my panties, and look at my butt, I think no you didn't just violated me you are some kinda freak to me. Reminder I am 66 year old with good skin. I have had some many surgeries at St Vincent Southside, and no nurse or doctor have ever ask me to turn over so I can pull your panties down, and check your skin. I mention earlier I gave a a list of my medications, and I mentioned to her when I take my medication. Suzan didn't realize she was dealing with a grown woman, that handles her own business. Suzan decides to change how I take my medication, and I stated that not when I take my medications. Suzan you are today, what? Suzan yes, me I can't take this medication on an empty stomach. Suzan yes you will, me no I'm not I know what's going to happen, Suzan say we have some graham crackers, and saltine crackers, I stated I don't eat that, Bully Suzan says that's all we have so I said ok. I eat a few graham crackers, and Suzan gave me the medicine, but check this out she gave me a pill that I am allergic to. When I told her that she said that's what the pharmacy sent up, but I told you I am allergic to that pill, well what's going to happen? I will break in a rash, and hives. Suzan I will order you some Benadryl. After taking the Benadryl Suzan asked me if i need to be resuscitate, would I like to have that done? Now listen to my response. No! Do not resuscitate me. Suzan says you want DNR, me yes! I stated it's in my will. Then the bully come out again in her, and this is what Suzan states if it's in your will we need a copy of it, she really thought I was a stone fool if she thought I would ask my husband to go home, and get my will for her to look over, not going to happen on my watch I just stared at her, and said this time is the only time I am willing to let that happen. There's no reason for her to see my will. When you check in the hospital for and surgery they ask you do you have a living will, and you answer yes they check a box on the paper, not say we need to see your will. I guess Suzan thought this was my first rodeo, wrong. Just my first time on your floor! The foolishness continues with this nurse, she very unprofessional. Then she have her student to give me a ekg. Now I'm constantly coughing, and this student wants me to lie flat on my back, and take this test. I said may I sit up, student I need you you flat, me I take ekg sitting up all the time. So I lie down, and this student didn't know what's she was doing, and I am coughing about to choke, and my sister stepped in, and said hold up now you see she coughing, now press that button. Recently I had a stroke and I went to St Vincent like I always have only this time it was the nastiest place I've ever seen there were p-rags on the floor under the bed when I got there and when I left they never supplied toilet paper someone had been using the wash rags and throwing them into the shower they were there when I got there and they were there when I left there was a bloody sheet in the window seal there was a urine specimen bottle half full against the wall again the whole week I was there the nurses sounded like they were having a fret party every night at the desk hooping and hollering​​​​​ there's no way to describe how nasty it was they were all rude they never gave me my exit instructions no one could find them later to give to my doctor it was just disgusting and don't get me started on the billing next time I'm going to try the new hospital on 280 Grand River it can't be worse than this read more

Everything from beginning to end was spectacular. Security did a thorough search of me and my belongings upon my entry to the ER. They also had guards posted in the lobby that made me feel safe. The woman at reception was very kind and helpful with registration. The male student nurse who drew my blood in triage was friendly and a great stick. Caroline (nightshift) went above and beyond to provide me with the best care. She was compassionate, patient, and did everything she could to make sure I was comfortable. Dr. Christopher Gore was also very kind. He listened to and addressed all of my concerns. Dr. Gore explained my results to me in a way that was easy to understand. Evveryone worked well as a team to make sure all of my questions were answered before I was discharged. Even the CT technician provided excellent care and explained what to expect with the contrast. My mother was transferred here from Ascension St. Vincent's Chilton with liver and kidney issues. I have never been to another hospital where literally everyone you meet that works there from doctors, nurses, techs, food service, and even janitorial staff were friendly and go above and beyond in the care they give. These people care. They have been so kind and have taken such good care of my mother. We've even had nurses we had in the SICU follow us to 7th floor to check on us. Not only have they taken awesome care of my mother but they also took care of me when I had Covid. I highly recommend this hospital. read more

UAB bought them out. So I make an appointment two weeks ago. They tell me my UAB insurance will not be accepted. I make an appointment somewhere else for a week later. They call me back "Oh we actually do take your insurance! I just called and confirmed. Would you like an appointment." "Yes, please." I canceled my appointment with the other place. Fast forward to today: I take off work and get there early. Sit for a few minutes then they call me up to tell me my insurance isn't accepted there. WHY WOULD YOU CALL ME BACK AND LIE AND TELL ME IT IS? So I try and call another place for an appointment since I canceled, thinking St.Vincents in Homewood wouldn't do this to their patients, and guess what? No new appointments until April next year. Two recent visits to St. Vincent's (and the parking garage) resulted my first visits to St. Vincent's Building 3 - and the parking garage. The pluses were that Google Maps and Waze took me directly there and the parking garage takes both cash or credit card. The challenges included the complexity of navigating to Building 3 - and the delay in my being able to exit the parking garage. Two stars were subtracted for these issues. Navigating: in short, getting from my car to the doctor's office made me uncomfortable and put me potentially in an unsafe environment. Navigating included (but were not limited to) walking (in heels) down a ramp, taking an elevator up 3 levels, then walking through the tunnel, then taking an elevator from the fifth floor to the second floor, then walking to the doctor's office at the end of the hallway. Returning to my car required me to reverse all the above steps. Delays: There was a delay in exiting the garage during both visits. The ten to twenty-minute delays made me feel like I was being held hostage by the parking garage. I paid $7 and $2 respectively. To be honest, rather than adventuring a third time onto the St. Vincent's campus, I will likely find another doctor - hopefully where I can park and simply walk into the doctor's office. read more

Went to the ER after not being able to be seen at urgent care. Despite having to go, the staff was very friendly, from the front desk to the amazing nurse. Nurse Whitney Nahay is absolutely AMAZING!!! She made me feel heard and understood which is honestly probably the first time I've felt that going to the ER. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this hell hole of a hospital if you are having surgery !!! Even more so if you're going to have to stay overnight or are considering out patient with observation. Anything that's a painful surgery or procedure. As they do Not care if you're in pain or not. I mean don't get me wrong they will give you 4 Tylenol. But the pain is out of this world and when you tell them (I am in pain) directly after surgery they seem to just automatically think that you must have an addiction. Basically will be challenged. Threatened that if you leave and go to another hospital for relief that your insurance will cancel and you will have to pay cash for St. Vincent's service. They won't even call the surgeon that performed the surgery for direction. And good luck in calling an ambulance to get picked up and carried to another hospital if your in extreme severe pain as I was. They will not come as your already at a hospital. Walk off the lot in the parking lot again was told that you wouldn't come. Called the after hours answering service for the Neurosurgery. Again was told we did the surgery but we can't call your surgeon nor a surgeon that's on call because you are admitted into the hospital. I just needed help and help right now. Got nothing. This is probably why ppl don't make it or turn to other types of things. Just don't do it. Boycott until they fix themselves read more

My daughter was in an accident yesterday and she had a fractured Tibia and they didn't even have a boot or crutches to put my baby's leg in. They let her leave without doing anything for her leg. They had to go drive around town with her in pain to try and find something. She didn't even live there so she didn't even know the town or where to start. I am so glad she wasn't worse off than she was. i hate she had to stay at this place for 4 hours to wait for her husband to get there to pick her up. So sad! read more

I was at St. Vincent's last week for 5 days. This was my fourth surgery in the past 8 years and each one has been rated a top grade. This visit was exceptional. I had a room on the third floor of the new south wing. The rooms are beautiful, well kept and clean. The care of that wing is excellent! Each nurse and staff member could not have been any better. I'd give this place no starts if possible. My son went last night to the ER there as he was in terrible pain and thought he had a kidney stone. He begged and begged to see a doctor while vomiting on their front desk. NO ONE ever saw him. They said they had no rooms. He didn't need a ROOM. He needed someone to look at him. It might have been food poisoning as he finally felt better after throwing up there four times. HOW the hell does this place NOT send a doctor to look at him after an hour of being in pain????? This was the first time I have been to the hospital. I was here for the Woman's and Children's department. The parking deck was pretty hectic and you have to exit the deck by going to the top floor. You also have to pay for parking - they take cards. I was a new patient here. I arrived early for my appointment and the receptionists were kind. They were very thorough with labs and their questions. I waited 45 minutes in my room for my meeting with my Gynecologist and the nurse came in and told me they will be another hour and a half because of emergency surgery. So, after driving a hour for this location I was not seen by a doctor unfortunately and had to head home and reschedule my appointment, which is a month from now. I get that things happen and doctors have priorities; however it was extremely disappointing. Thank goodness my symptoms are manageable! Very disrespectful place. Seems like everyone gets to do what they want...not very clean. OR experience was very unpleasant. Rooms very crowded. Nurses let you sit in pee & say "eh they'll worry about it on the floor" then no one on the floor really cared. Left my grandpa in the same sheets covered in old shedded skin. Nurses are very rude & have an "above" you attitude. Leave me at home next time. Let me go to the Lord. read more

This office closes 25 to 30 minutes before the time advertised. This is highly misleading and should be stopped. We arrived before closing time and were turned away and told the office stopped taking patients 25 minutes before. They also refused to answer the phone when we called which would have saved us a trip. This is NOT how an urgent care center should operate. read more

Outside of having a baby, no one is really going to the hospital for a good reason. After a recent visit from my mother, we had a situation arise that required an Emergency Room visit. After the recent closing of Trinity that is closest to our house. This is the hospital we chose off of proximity alone. Upon arrival, you have to go through a metal detector. And while slightly inconvenient, the added safety well outweighs any of that. The staff at the ER desk were not very friendly or concerned. And I feel with everything they see and have to deal with every day, I know that is consistent across the board. And they got their job done and that is all you can really ask. The ER staff was very friendly, helpful, and effective. Once again, any ER across the board is going to take a long time. So it was a long night well into the morning. Our visit resulted in having to be admitted. That process (though taking a while) was very seamless too. Every single person we have dealt with since being admitted has been extremely friendly and concerned. Even the administration makes sure that you are have as good of an experience as possible. Not once have we felt they treated us as if we are stuck in this hospital no matter what they do. The surgeon they assigned us has been extremely helpful and informative. Overall this has been a great experience as far as hospitals go. read more

Great Hospital. I owe my life to them for three different occasions. The staff is extremely professional and nice. I have a procedure to relieve pain every three months there and wouldn't have it done anywhere else. They have a tightly run process that reduces stress for the patients and their drivers. That's important when people are taking time off from work regularly to drive their mothers home afterwards. If I could give them more stars I would. The facilities are spotless more than I can say about another hospital my brother was in recently. I wish they would adapt the food service UAB has but otherwise it's an excellent hospital. I had blood clots years ago that would've been fatal if not for their prompt response to my doctor to get me in a MRI. I recently had a series of strokes that prevented me from being able for my brain to communicate with my hands. I had a somewhat lengthy stay here March 2015 (8 days). My nurses and doctors were top-notch, friendly and full of compassion. They were knowledgeable, easy to talk with and concerned, which are qualities that seem to be missing from the healthcare field these days. Even the food was great, albeit I was on a regular diet. Everyone made my stay here much more pleasant, especially with it being my first stay in the hospital, and especially since no one goes to the hospital and stays unless they are really sick. The staff here did an excellent job with my aunt on her surgery. They were friendly to us, didn't mind all the questions, and were helpful in pointing our family in the right direction when we got lost (which can happen quite easily in this building). There were lots of places to charge our phones, and they've done some renovations recently and improved their food selections - both of which are nice for those who are visiting someone who is here more than a few hours. read more

On multiple multiple multiple visits to this hospital , a the major heart surgery, even in the event of my father passing away they never provided a sign language interpreter The medical "professionals" never ask my father for medical history, medication history they never requested for an asl interpreter, they never requested a video interpreter they didn't contact UAB, they didn't contact Alabama institute of the deaf and blind,they never did anything to help anybody with special needs assistance... they refuse to listen to any of the handwritten notes that my mother wrote to the nurses they disregarded them as if they were lower into like people. They handcuffed my father to the bed for over seven hours without requesting interpreter... ( he was simply signing that he was in immense pain) and instead of trying to do the ethical thing , they did textbook definition neglection and abuse in a fucking hospital environment. This hospital never did anything to help anybody with special needs assistance... my mother didn't even know my father passed away they handed her a body donation packet and told her sorry we couldn't find an interpreter. This hospital is unethical to the treatment of people that need disability services do not go !do not go !do not go !because every time my family has gone there they have put my family at risk and my father has passed away from the ignorance of this hospital (And this isn't just me ranting because my father passed away this is been the last 10 years of treatment with my father in "this" hospital with these so-called medical professionals that are supposed to take care of you) Do not go to this hospital if you acquire any disability Services assistance They are in complete ignorance of the American disability act read more

This place hooks you up with external provider after checking and saying " yes you are covered". First lie of the saga. This external provider disputes what Medicare says it will pay and refuses to file with Medicare. This provider also told me they would file with my prescription provider but they have not. Talked to corporate and was told twice that they would check into this and get back with me. Lie #2 & #3. Back to external provider for lie #4 which was they would file with sister CVS division.Lie #5 was Stacey Purkey sales liaison was also going to check into this and has not done so that gives her lie #1 & #5. Seeking other avenues of relief as I am very tired of keeping up with the number of lies and who told them. Stop here only if you are sure you will not survive the 6 block trip to UAB! This is a wonderful hospital! What I thought was a charley horse, turned out to be a bucket handle tear of the meniscus. Thank God for Dr. McGough for quickly repairing my meniscus! Surgery was a breeze and Dr. McGough and nurses made sure my mind was at ease at all times. However, prior to my surgery, an MRI was ordered. I went to the imaging center at the hospital. While the receptionist, Marie, was super sweet and accommodating, one of the radiology technicians, Rita, was extremely rude. Her attitude was very nasty and she obviously lacked people skills. This is certainly not the profession for her and I feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with her. Perhaps she can acquire more personality before coming in contact with other patients. Other than that, St. Vincent's is a great place! read more

This hospital is THE WORST!!! Ridiculous wait time in the ER with uninterested, unengaged staff...we couldn't get anyone to come help us while we were waiting on a doctor and my poor elderly mother peed in the bed!!! No one would make eye contact to help us. And when she was admitted to the hospital, it wasn't safe for me to leave her by herself because the staff wouldn't come when she called and she kept having to poop and pee on herself, waiting for help. Furthermore, she was an extreme fall risk, and the staff disabled the bed alarm in her room and just set up a portable potty by her bedside for her to use. Also, both her arms were bruised badly up and down because no one could get a decent pick line in. Rather than call on a pick team to come do it professionally, they kept sticking her over and over and over and over. I've never met so many unprofessional, uncaring hospital staff in my life. I would never take someone I love and want to survive to this hospital!!! read more
