Despite this, I was told multiple times that I would not be allowed to leave with the vehicle unless I purchased their insurance. I felt I had no choice but to accept the charges in order to receive the vehicle. I was far from another rental agency, had pre-paid the rental fee, and had my entire family and luggage to contend with. After the rental, I contacted Routes Car Rental to dispute the charges and requested a refund. The company denied my request, claiming I failed to provide proof of insurance, that they offered to help locate my insurance declaration page, and that I voluntarily accepted the coverage by signing the rental agreement. These statements are inaccurate. At no point was I given a meaningful opportunity to provide proof of my insurance or told that coverage was truly optional. Instead, I was told the insurance was required to rent the vehicle. I responded by requesting evidence supporting their claims, including any audio or video recordings, documentation showing I was offered the opportunity to provide my own insurance, and proof that I voluntarily selected the coverage. Routes Car Rental has not provided any such evidence and continues to rely solely on the signed rental agreement, despite my contention that it was signed under pressure after being told the vehicle would not be released without purchasing the additional coverage. I believe this constitutes a deceptive sales practice in which optional products were misrepresented as mandatory. I am requesting a full refund of all optional insurance charges and that Routes Car Rental review its rental practices to ensure future customers are not subjected to similar misleading sales tactics. I also contacted BBB, my credit card company, and Expedia. Expedia attempted to contact the company for a return of funds, but it was denied to them also. AVOID this TERRIBLE BUSINESS! At pickup, though, the staff informed me that their location requires $300,000-$350,000 in property damage coverage. This is significantly higher than what most standard auto policies include (usually around $50,000-$100,000). Because of this requirement, I was forced to purchase additional insurance. As a result, the total cost for the 3-day rental increased to $380.36--nearly double the original quoted price. On top of that, my credit card was charged $388.09, plus an additional $14.51 for toll fees that I was initially told were already included. I'm sharing this experience so that others are aware and don't get caught off guard like I did. Based on my experience, the pricing was misleading, and the situation felt deceptive/scammed. After weeks of trying to get my deposit back, I received an email from Sonic Car Rental on May 24 stating that my security deposit was "scheduled to be released on June 4" and that no further action was required on my part. It is now June 22, and I still have not received my $1,000. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Sonic represented that the deposit would be released, yet the BBB closed the complaint as unresolved before there was any way to verify whether the promised refund would actually occur. The refund never arrived. To date: * No damage claim has been provided. * No repair invoice has been provided. * No explanation has been provided for withholding the deposit. * Multiple attempts to contact the company have gone unanswered. * The promised refund date has come and gone. What is most frustrating is that the company acknowledged the deposit should be released and even provided a specific date. That date passed more than two weeks ago, and I am still waiting for my money. Consumers should carefully document every communication, keep copies of their rental agreement, monitor their credit card statements, and be prepared to dispute charges if necessary. I am bringing it back using only 5 hours on the last day. She immediately shot back and said "you stated 6pm on your return time and it is 7:04pm and I am charging you 2 hours late". When I said, "Serious?' She said, "Yeah I am serious, you heard me". I asked for a manager to speak with and she said I could call or go inside. I was on my way to catch a flight and had no time to go to the rental car desk and find a manager. Hopefully, someone sees this and can help with the customer service on the return side of the business. I know some of these young kids are not used to talking to adults, but if you do not know how to speak to customers, do not put these employees in those positions.
