People people people. It's Christmas tree time~! Now you could do what millions of others do and treat the buying of a tree just like picking out a stalk of celery at the grocery store: stop for a few moments before the display, fondle a stalk or two, decide which one looks the nicest and carry it out to the cashier, paying the average of $70 a tree and calling it a day.
Or . . . . you could actually have a blast of a time and turn the matter into an adventure filled with fun and stories. For anywhere from $5 to $20 go buy a tree cutting permit at your local Forest Service office and head west to any of the several USDA Forest Service-designated areas in the foothills and mountains.
You'll have the best time traipsing through the woods, saw in hand, passing by tree-after-tree that's not full enough, tall enough, conical enough, or whatever enough, before settling for the likes of a loveable Charlie Brown looking kinda tree that's indeed truly one-of-a-kind. Nothing fresher. Nothing more organic. Nothing more fun. And when it becomes a family tradition you'll find that it opens up the forest to you and yours just a tad more than you'd previously experienced, making what grows in woods a little bit more a part of your urban life.
