Although applicants are not necessarily education majors, Teach For America's application process is rigid so that they get the best educators (Corps Members) for our nation's children. Additionally, they provide a summer Training Institute and a lot of support from Teach For America throughout their two-year commitment teaching in a low-income school. My roommate was a former Recruitment Fellow at Teach For America's National Office. After one year of recruitment, she applied to be a Corps Member (teacher), was accepted, and is now in her second year of teaching. She has had a very positive experience with Teach For America, both during her time as a Recruitment Fellow and as a Corp Member. Somewhere during my roommate's time at the National Office, I began temping at Teach For America. Several times a year, they need some extra hands for some high-volume projects, such as during the application process. I have had a tremendously positive experience there. The staff is great. They are really hard-working people who are all strongly committed to fighting educational inequity through this program that ensures: "One day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education." It was originally constructed between 1902 and 1907! The building originally served as the headquarters for the U.S. Customs Service. The building is massive! It includes granite facade, and a columned entrance! The building's exterior has designs based on continents and symbols of maritime commerce! After the U.S. Customs service relocated in the 1970s, the building is now the National Museum of the American Indian! You can visit and explore the rotunda, murals, and the monumental staircases.

I was very grateful to see accessible Global Entry appointments being offered in the city to avoid…read moregoing to the airport for an appointment. You are essentially approved on the day of your Global Entry interview and can use your assigned number right away. The process of making an appointment online was easy through your portal, but it can be essentially up to a month long wait for availability. I only needed my passport for the appointment, but in the appointment confirmation they ask you to bring additional ID, your conditional acceptance letter, and proof of residency. On the appointment day, look for the Bankruptcy Dept entrance and make a right turn, there will be another entrance around the corner with security inspection. The entrance was hard to find because there is scaffolding all around the building and no clear signage. There was one sign that said to enter through the museum entrance, which was closed at 8am. There were armed NYPD officers with automatic weapons standing in front of the building, which really set the tone for the experience, though they didn't know anything about Global Entry appointments when I asked them where the right entrance was. Upon entering, the security was incredibly rude for no reason. I greeted the security officer and he pointed to the open bins, then spoke to me in a demeaning way when I put my items into the bin because he wanted me to wait for him to tell me when to put my items in despite there being no one in front or behind me. He made me take my things out and berated me, and then had me put my things back into the same bin a moment later. I was really shocked by how rude the interaction was. After security, you wait in a seating area and an agent comes down with a clipboard asking for people with appointment slots. You go up with people to the fourth floor into another small, crowded waiting room until your name is called by a person behind a counter. They take the no cellphone, tablet, or headphone policy very seriously, so be sure to put things away before going upstairs. Once you're called, they take a quick photo of you and I was told that I'd receive my Global Entry card within 2-3 weeks. Overall, everything took about 10 mins in and out, but just know you will probably face some sort of aggressive behavior at some point, so wait to be instructed for everything. The whole experience felt so tense and hostile despite being straightforward.

I was given a parking ticket during the pandemic and then received another ticket for not updating…read moremy cars parking permit. The people I spoke to were not helpful, they actually asked why I had not looked at the car before today (because pandemic and not driving) and told me I would get another ticket for parking without a permit if I did not get a new permit immediately. The clerk told me she would help me If I got there right away and she did have a packet made for me. We drove to the town clerk and the police officer at the front desk was beyond unhelpful and had no idea I was coming to pick up the permit. He actually told me that even though I was at the police station I would have to call to tell someone else in the building that I lived on the road I was being ticketed on and there was no way I could get a permit today. Fortunately the person responsible for the permit came out at that moment. The officer had no idea what he was doing and had a bad attitude as well. The clerk was helpful and I would give her more stars but the officer was deliberately giving out incorrect information and didn't bother to check to see if the clerk was putting my permit together. I would give him zero stars if I could.

We have an abundance of parks; Shore Road, Leif Erickson, John Paul Jones and Owl's Head to name a few. Great for families to enjoy a day at the park. Our community outreach is top notch; Salvation Army, Bay Ridge Community Center. Our schools also are impactful, Fort Hamilton High, Xaverian, William McKinley Our restaurants offer diversity from Italian ( Campania, Brooklyn Roots) to Indian ( Mint Bay) to Mexican ( Coszcal de Allende) to Chinese ( Rose Bowl); these are a few of my favorites. If you love to golf Dyker Heights is a great place to tee off as well as utilize as a venue for special events. And our City Councilman, Justin Brennan and Senator Andrew Gounardes always have Bay Ridgians' best interests at heart. Today as a community we gathered to remember our veterans who served via the 158th Memorial Day parade. I'm sharing some photos from today to show how strong our community is in Fort Hamilton.
