I used U-Pack's trailer option to move stuff from Virginia to California. In this option they deliver a 28 foot trailer to your residence, leave it there for up to three business days (they don't deliver or pick up on weekends or holidays), you pack it, call them when you're finished, they pick it up and drive it to the destination point. You can track where the truck is throughout transport. You put your stuff in first and then they fill the rest of the truck with commercial packages and goods. You partisan your stuff off by installing a wooden bulkhead that's provided. It's not difficult to install but it is heavy. They have the length by feet marked off on the walls of the trailer, so you will know how much space you are using.
I chose this option instead of a container/pod because I would have needed two or more pods for all my stuff, which would have been considerably more expensive than renting a portion of the trailer. Also when you rent a portion of the trailer, you have a lot of flexibility. I was unsure of exactly how much space I was going to use. I gave my original contact person a rough idea of the items I wanted to transport and he estimated that I would need around seven feet of length (The truck is nine feet tall and eight feet wide.). But, he said that if it ended up that I needed less space, they would subtract $91 off of the price for each foot not used, and if I needed more space, they would add $91 for each foot used. He was correct in his estimate of seven feet. I actually went a tiny bit over, but they did not charge me extra, which was very appreciated. They require that you pay a set base price for five feet and then add the $91 for each additional foot. Also, their price was quite a bit less than what I was quoted through their automatic website estimator.
My stuff actually arrived quicker than I had expected. My contract estimated that it would arrive six to eight business days after pickup. The company, however, contacted me to tell me that my stuff had arrived a week after they had picked it up in Virginia. Also, my stuff arrived in the exact same shape...absolutely no damage. But, with that said, it is important to use ratchets or ropes to stabilize your stuff. I used four ratchets along the front of the stuff and it remained stable.
The drivers on both ends were friendly, flexible, and courteous. And the same goes for the three people I interacted with via phone during the process. read more
