I called and asked the temperature of their climate controlled storage. The employee told me "65 degrees during summer and 75 degrees during winter". That is clearly the opposite of what anyone would do. They obviously would not pursue the cost-maximizing approach. Also, why the ten degree differential? It would obviously be cheaper to maintain, say, 70 degrees all year long than 75 during winter and 65 during summer. I like to torture myself apparently, so I pushed back. She angrily insisted that she knows what she's talking about, despite the fact that she obviously does not. I've sworn this place off a few times in the last 40 years. My husband & I moved from Chicago to Los Angeles this year & had a tow hitch installed in Chicago. After making a short drive to Champaign, we noticed the trailer was very low to the ground. We stopped at this location to have it checked out & make sure we were good to go for the adventure ahead of us. Jae confirmed that is was too low to the ground & took the time change it out for us. I was happy to find an in stock hitch that fit my vehicle. Even better, installation times were available the very next day. Using a credit card I checked out paying for the hitch and the labor. I then received an email CONFIRMING the install time, along with a separate order receipt. The next day I arraigned for someone to pick me up after I dropped off my vehicle for the 9:00 am, confirmed installation. Guess what, that hitch was not in stock. I asked why I was able to pay for the hitch and schedule installation if it was not in stock. Several times I was simply told the Uhaul system was not reliable, that I should not have relied on the confirmation email! I asked how would I know, to which I just got a shoulder shrug and a refund. Use Uhaul if you enjoy the feeling of frustration and like to waste time. OMG, do not use U-Haul in Champaign!!! I wish I could rate it a zero!! Sorry, this is a long story... So here is my saga...made a reservation on the 16th to pick up a car dolly for a couple of days, pick up was today. I was going to pick up my 80 year old father and his car, 3 hours away, and come back to Champaign. I was told my 2013 Ford Explorer Sport could tow their car dolly and my Dad's car. My Ford was not rated to tow a full car carrier (4 wheels on the trailer). So, show up 10 minutes early to Champaign U-Haul and they have switched my reservation to car carrier. I was advised their only car dolly was being repaired. The two employees to this point were doing their best to find a solution. After some time goes by, one of the employees says the dolly has actually been repaired. I'm thrilled with this news and then we are joined by the general manager, James. James inserts himself in a situation that has been solved, telling me, again, the dolly has been fixed. He then looks at my reservation on the computer in front of him and says I'm towing with an explorer and that is not allowed. He claims U-Haul does not rent anything that will be hauled by an explorer because of the decade old debacle with the Firestone tire mess. I asked why his employees had not said anything about this previously. He said he didn't know and could not help me. As I cancel my reservation and start to leave, James says "have a nice day" in a very condescending tone. I say, with my back to him, still walking towards the exit, "f$@% you!" He repeats his statement and I repeat mine as I walk out the door. Scrambling, I call U-Haul in Springfield (Stephenson Road) and they come through with a dolly. I was told by this employee that the ban on Fords only applies to 2010 models and older. My 2013 is fine to haul a dolly. After arriving in Springfield, I speak with the Assistant Manager, Carlos, and explain what happened with James. He looks at my account and says James put a hold on my account, saying I can't rent from U-Haul and has put a $1,000 bill on my account! I am stunned and Carlos is just as stunned. He immediately removes the hold and the $1,000 bill and apologizes profusely for James' behavior. He advised me there was no reason to have a hold on my account and certainly no reason to put the charge on my account. A short time later, I'm off to get my Dad and his car, dolly in tow. So Yelp pulled my First To Review review of this business and sent me an email explaining they did so "because it lacks a substantive firsthand experience." ~~~ This disastrafuck of an excuse for what on a charitable day I would consider a missed abortion opportunity of a so-called business would cause weaker souls to commit hara-kiri before reaching the front of the line. NEVER DO BUSINESS HERE. NEVER. ~~~ Allow me to elaborate. We spent 90 minutes here waiting to make a 4-minute transaction. We rented a truck online and had our confirmation email and receipt with us. There were 14 customers queued up when we arrived and only one gentlemen working the desk. He had three computers going with a customer at each and was walking back and forth between them doing a little bit at each before moving on to the next. Like reading the first three sentences of every article in the New York Times and returning to Page 1 to begin reading sentences 4-6. Not helpful. Another gentlemen was working that evening, but apparently did not know how to use the computers, as he just stood by and watched the first guy inch closer and closer to a stress-induced heart attack - which may have proved more humane than the alternative. Stopped by to return a trailer that we hauled from Seattle, WA - there was about a 15 min wait while other customers are serviced by the 2 available employees. We had misplaced our paperwork in the hectic hustle of moving , but the employee was gracious enough to look up our information on the computer. The only thing I would ding on is the professionalism of the employees - it was wretched hot, & one of the employees questioned if the co-worker was wearing deodorant; this was in front of a handful of customers. But then again, I come here for the equipment, not for the mind-blowing service. All in all, I have no qualms about returning for equipment rentals. Easily accessible location, spacious lot, & honestly, there's no other competition in town. Also, they tend to be slammed Fri-Sun, so be prepared to wait. read more

Back in April, I reserved a self-storage room for August. I need storage to store stuff while switching apartments. In August, when I checked-in, they said the storage room isn't available and that's not how reservation works. I asked the staff what was going on. Seems like a reservation doesn't mean reserving the storage space. It means reserving a spot in the line. I couldn't really find the fine print saying that. There are some vague terms in the FAQ page. (To those who know Seinfeld, this really does remind me of the episode where Jerry tried to reserve a car.) I'm not sure if this is Uhaul's policy in general or is it that this branch decided to ignore my reservation and give the storage space to somebody else. It did really negatively affect my move. Since I feel that the policies about self-storage reservation isn't clearly written anywhere, I'll go with the common sense definition of the word reservation, and give them the lowest rating because they could not honor that. To be fair, this rating is only for this branch. I don't want to conclude that all Uhaul locations are bad at honoring reservations, since I don't know that yet. The staff I met were not rude. They weren't friendly either. Just indifferent. I called around, and I ended up using Prime Storage instead of Uhaul. They're about 10 minutes away from campus. We rented a 5x5x7 storage unit for our student to store their belongings over the summer. I phoned in March 2019 to make the arrangements and spoke with Jae Lee. He was extremely helpful and accommodating. We did hear that there can be long lines on move out day so we showed up early to get the keys, lock, etc. Then went to move our student out. We had an upper unit which requires a stair unit to access - the kind of tall stair ladder on wheels that you see at Home Depot. It was quite easy to access and the unit is at least 9 or 10 feet tall (our guess is the units below are 7 feet). In August the move out of the unit was extremely fast. We will be renting again! Quick Summary --- Had a reservation for a truck at 12:45 PM on 8/10. Came to the store at 12:30, got my truck at 2:15. No that's not a typo. On the flip side, all the trucks seem to be well-maintained. That's the only flip side. Every other aspect of this experience was hell. Review --- U-Haul on University, words cannot express how much U-Suck. *canned laughter* Okay, but seriously, the U-Haul located on University Ave is a perfect example of why competition is necessary for the sake of the consumer. I've used U-Haul to move before on two occasions. They were all poor experiences, but today was the most miserable of the three. You figure for peak moving season in a large campus town that U-Haul should be staffing themselves heavily to meet the large amount of people with reservations. Nope. The moment I stepped in my heart sank at the fact that the store was being staffed by the GM alone. It's okay, calm down. There's only five people in front of you. Fine, since I've got some time to kill, let's look around. Gray. Lifeless. The interior looked so depressing. The face of the GM was equally lifeless and depressing. Now I'm not asking for fun neon colors and sparkling ribbons to adorn the place. Gray is fine. I love gray... just not dusty gray. Not more-dilapidated-than-Sears gray. Not it's-sucking-the-life-out-of-you gray. That aside, the service was beyond slow. I knew from the past two experiences that I should get in early. I came in 15 minutes early for my reservation, expecting to get out within 45 minutes. No, friends. It didn't take 45 minutes to get my truck. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes to get my truck. Also remember that there were only five customers in front of me when I came in! The GM was serving people at the speed of snail. It took over 30 minutes to help out this one customer, only to send him back to the end of the line. Upon inquiring as to why, he was told that this was a new request / transaction so he had to get back in queue. Legends say that he is still waiting in line at the store today. #suckstosuck #3spooky5me After an eternity and a half, it finally came my turn in line to get helped. The GM never greeted me. Never looked at me. Never thanked me. Didn't even apologize for the excruciatingly long wait. Worst customer service ever. I finished my paperwork and was told to wait outside for him. I finally walked out of that hell hole and got some fresh air. 2 minutes. Oh, he's taking a little long to come out, I'm sure he'll come out soon. 5 minutes. Maybe he's having trouble finding the key to my truck? 10 minutes. Okay now I'm getting mad. Where is he? I walk back into the store to see him exactly where I left him. At the desk helping another customer. What about my truck bro??? I couldn't believe it. I waved at him to remind him I still needed my truck but he refused to acknowledge me. I waited another 5 minutes outside before he came out, pointed to the first truck in line, and said, "That's your truck. Keys are already inside." As if he couldn't have told me that from the beginning? Agh, writing this review is making me relive this horrible experience but I think you should have gotten the point by now. Have rented an open trailer here on occasion to move things within town. It's fine but such a hassle for a $19 rental. It ends up costing me around 40 minutes. They ask so many questions for the rental and it's just a cheap trailer. I can rent a $20,000 new car with much less hassle. Recently a friend of mine reserved a truck from this location and when she showed up for pickup, she was told she had to go get it from a location several miles away. When she argued that she had a reservation their response was "yes, we keep the reservation here, but not the vehicle - you have to go somewhere else to get the truck". Seriously??? So now our time is wasted and we have to pay for the extra mileage to go to a more distant location. The only reason I gave them 2 starts is because there really isn't a better trailer option that I'm aware of. read more

I am a regular renter at the U-Haul on University Avenue. In fact, I usually rent anywhere from 2-5 times per year. I've rented both trucks and trailers from this location and have never had a bad experience. In fact, things have always been above and beyond great. I would recommend other users make use of the option to perform an online check in the day you are to rent. That will allow you to make sure everything is in order before you go to get your rental. When I got a new vehicle, they were also great about helping me get set up to tow again. I really didn't know the first thing about what I needed to buy. I have been to this Uhaul location a few times in the last month for my relocation, it is one of the best customer service experience i had anywhere. The manager was super friendly and helpful. The first time i came, I wanted to rent a trailer but did not know that i need trailer light installed. They helped me to cancel the rental. I then got the light kit and tried to do it myself but couldn't. I made appointments to pick up some appliances that day and need to get it done. It was weekend and my regular mechanics was not open. I booked appointment and have it installed at Uhaul within an hour and was able to get the trailer after that. read more

There are a few times in life where you genuinely ask how a company can still be in business, and then you realize it's because people literally have no choice but to use them. If you can, don't use U-Haul. My husband and I reserved a trailer several weeks in advance for our out of state move. Two days before, we paid them $90 to do the wiring our SUV needed to work with the trailer. The next morning, they called to let us know they had no trailers available - not just no trailer of the size we wanted, but no trailers AT ALL. Well, actually, they offered us one an hour and a half away in another state. Apparently, people in the middle of a move usually have an entire day to kill running around picking up a trailer from a national company in another state because inventory is low at all the closer locations. 1) The customer service agent said trailers "available" doesn't mean that they're available at your desired location (or apparently even in the same state in our case). 2) She said it was our fault for assuming a trailer was available because the website doesn't promise availability when you reserve it. We asked if "available" for a Central Illinois customer could mean available in New York City, and she said that it's unlikely but possible. POSSIBLE!? 3) Why you do work on a customer's car if your inventory was currently so low that less the 24 hours later, you had NOTHING available? Wouldn't you think it would be just human decency to tell them that it was very likely at that point they might be spending their money on trailer wiring for nothing? None of the customer service agents we spoke to offered anything they could do to help. They legitimately left us with no options. We had to rent our own storage unit and make a separate 6-hour trip back on another weekend to pick up the rest of our things. Since writing about it on social media, several people we know have reached out and told us a similar situation happened to them. Unless U-Haul does something to change how they do business, this company is completely useless unless you live in a major city with a lot of people moving to and from. Can you imagine showing up at an airport to get a rental car and then being told the closest rental car is an hour away? Yeah, me neither. U-Haul apparently does this every day. read more

I ordered a 17' truck with no extras for my move. As anyone who has used U-Haul in the past knows, they often throw things like dollies and protective mats on the back of the truck which can be used for an extra fee. Well, apparently this truck had a dolly on the back without a protective green seal to signify that it had not been used. When I returned the truck later in the day, the attendant refused to believe the mistake could have possibly been on their end and charged me an extra fee for the use of the dolly, which I did not use. My advice to future customers: always check the back of the truck before leaving the parking lot to avoid pointless fees. read more

I rented a truck in July for a one-way move. I was supposed to pick the truck up around 10 AM, but it wasn't available until well after 2 PM. When I showed up at 10:00, there was a long line of customers and only one employee who could work the computer. Since my truck wasn't there, the employee said I should call over in a few hours to check on the status. When I called the number he gave me, I was routed to a central call center and my call was answered by a disgruntled troll. So I decided to make a second personal appearance. This time, I got into line behind the guy who was returning my truck 4 or 5 hours late. The employee behind the computer from the morning appeared to be the only staff member at the location - literally. He dealt with the previous guy, cleaned out the truck, then processed the paperwork for me. That employee was extremely nice, but it was ridiculous that he was left there by himself. The process took about an hour. Also, the boxes that I bought there fell apart. Buy your boxes from Two Men and a Truck - they're more expensive, but they stay together. read more

I'm doing this review as I wait on hold on the phone with this UHAUL location for 34 minutes, and counting. This is unacceptable. Every time I go here to rent a truck for my business, there's only one employee doing everything, from looking up the reservation, to inspecting the vehicle, to checking the customer out. The employee leaves out to go inspect the vehicle, when there are 5 customers waiting behind in line. This place needs at least two more employees, and better customer service. They are also sometimes unreliable, as they say they have vehicles, but don't, and sometimes don't call to notify us. I know they can't control if someone brings their vehicle back on time, but please, at least give us a call to let us know if we're S.O.L. Trailer has a tire issue so I went back for them to fix it, waited around for the guy to even find a tire then waited for him to go find tools to change it , went ahead and changed it myself because I had to get on the road , he said he would credit me for doing it ( which they eventually did) they hooked up the trailer themselves, when I returned the trailer after hours I couldn't get the hitch off so I had to just leave my insert there and called in the next day. They had to cut their trailer to get it off. Apparently defect in trailer. Then find out days later there are 2 charges on my card one for the initial charge and one for the discounted charge. Called in to let them know ( also horrible customer care on phone ) listened to guy mumble and act like he doesn't care about his job then sends my call to the manager and when I try to tell him about the issue he kept interrupting me. Asked him to let me finish , he was rude and tried to inform me the charge would go away. Told him a second time since he didn't let me finish that the charge was hard posted. He put me on hold then came back and said I was right , I told him I know I was and if he would have let me talk this conversation would have been shorter. He said 99% of the time it falls off. But the thing i didn't like is the rude way they talk to customers here. I will NEVER use this place again and I suggest if you want better service go somewhere else! read more

I reserved and rented a one-way covered trailer from U-Haul in Champaign-Urbana, IL on University Ave on May 15th. This reservation was made weeks in advance in anticipation of an out of state move that required extensive planning. (also, this weekend was graduation of a major state university located in town) I recieved a call from the location the day prior confirming my pick up time and rental. On the day of pick up - the computer system was "down". The employees inside ultimately told us they were not able to assign a one-way trailer without access and that they were unable to help me. No other locations nearby were open or had available trailers in any size. As advised, I contacted the general manager, Andre Hubbard, who was out of the area. Mr. Hubbard was rude, inconsiderate, and unhelpful. He made no effort to reach a resolution. During our call - he never asked for my name, the details of my reservation, or the reservation number I had available. He made degrading and insulting remarks in my ability to understand the situation. Even after I asked specifically, he did not offer to contact anyone else in the regional area for assistance. With no help or direction from Andre, I contacted the number written on the vehicle in the parking lot: 1 800 - go - Uhaul. A woman in transportation, Tammy, was immediately able to assist me and provide me a trailer assignment. I spent more than 3 hours waiting and delayed during my rental pick up due to the poor management and operations of this establishment. Many other customers were affected on this same day. If it was not for my own perseverance, I would have not received a trailer or continued with my plans to move. The employees at the establishment were eager and willing to help. With some direction and resources provided from management, the location  would immensely improve. GUARANTEED CONFIRMATION OF TRUCK RENTAL DOES NOT MEAN GUARANTEED, APPARENTLY I received the following email from UHaul the day before I was supposed to pick up my truck. I had made the reservation online a few days before and requested a pick-up time of 5:30 because I did not get off work until 5pm. --------------------------- Dear (me), We have a 14' Moving Van and Furniture Pads reserved for you and guaranteed tomorrow 8/7/2014 at 5:00 PM. We are located at 306 E UNIVERSITY, CHAMPAIGN, IL 61820, and our phone number is (217) 351-7040. --------------------------------- When I arrived at the Champaign IL location around 5:30pm, they did not have a truck for me.They could not tell me when I could get a truck, and had no other options or solutions for the problem. They didn't even apologize. I showed the email from UHaul with my confirmation and guarantee, but the Champaign location said there was nothing they could do and that my truck was not guaranteed. They said we could wait to see if someone brought in a truck or we could try coming back the next day. We had deadlines for moving out and moving in to the new location (assisted living facilities that require paperwork/contracts/etc), which was why we had RESERVED a truck in the first place instead of just walking in and hoping there was one available. Around 6pm, they found a truck at the Bloomington IL location and had the manager stay open late so that we could get the truck - making us drive an hour out of our way, and drive our car AND the UHaul truck an hour back to the original pick-up location WHICH WAS CONFIRMED AND GUARANTEED. So we had to pay in gas and time to get what was supposedly guaranteed. WORST EXPERIENCE with any type of car/truck rental I've had. I will go someplace else for my moving needs in the future because UHaul's definition of "guarantee" is clearly not the same as the one found in the dictionary--a formal promise or assurance (typically in writing) that certain conditions will be fulfilled, especially that a product will be repaired or replaced if not of a specified quality and durability. read more

When I got to the pick up location a few minutes later, I was told that they didn't have any and my only option was to get a more expensive one. This is absolutely OBSURD customer service. A planned move to Fla has been thrown into total disarray because they screwed up a reservation that I made in person and confirmed in person, 6 weeks in advance! So let me come right out and say that this place has TERRIBLE management and logistical support, but working within that are some pretty solid people trying to do well by the customer. Our truck wasn't there because the person who rented it got told by the GM that they could return it late (yep, the general manager didn't check the reservations). Pretty bad starting point, but from then on, all efforts were made to make this right by us and while it did take a bit longer than it should have (probably an hour to finally be driving away), we were on our way with everything we needed. The truck was in good working order and at no point did we feel like we were getting gouged or baited and switched. Today we received a call from the DM of the Uhaul location letting us know that they would not have any trucks in the state of Illinois. The only way we would be getting a truck is to drive to get it in Lafayette, IN. I said that was unacceptable as we have had the reservation for over a week and have a week before the reservation was to happen. Then she said we don't require our locations to go pick up the vehicles for you and we aren't going to pay for your rental... What does she mean pay for my rental when we are paying over $300 to rent the truck in the first place. Then they want us to travel 3 hours and pay for the gas to get the vehicle prior to us even starting our move? Poor customer service. I would not recommend the company and as a company would not employ people with such poor customer service and communication skills. We then called Budget, they confirmed they would have a truck or go pick up one for us, and what a difference in experience. Uhaul needs to learn from its competitors, though this is the first bad experience with the company as we have had great service in other areas prior. My husband and I went in person and spoke with Naveen to rent 5 U-boxes with truck and trailer included for the following week. Called the day before to confirm everything was a go. The lady said the truck had been left off the order (we're thinking glad we called the day before). She added the truck to the order and confirmed it would be waiting for us the next morning at 7:30. The next morning we were there and no truck or trailer ready. We walked inside and Naveen the manager waited on us. We said we are here to pick up the u-boxes truck and trailer. He said someone else rented the trailer and don't have another. We said we just called yesterday to confirm our reservations. He said we talked to the call center and not to ever trust what they say. I said the lady's name was Cindy and she said she works at this location. Naveen threw up his arms and said No Cindy works here. So I looked at my husband and said " it looks like we can't trust any of these people".( I never said this to Naveen, but was speaking very low to my husband, meaning the call center and this location. We were getting different stories from both) Naveen then said to me twice, You don't make those negative comments and that I was not allowed to speak that way in his store. He then told us to get out of his store I said well I don't appreciate you speaking to me and telling me what I can or can't say. Naveen Washington was very rude and we were in shock to have been treated like this. We immediately said we are cancelling our order. He then said I'll do one better yet, he picked up the phone and told the lady on the other end of the phone, that he had a customer in his store that "copped an attitude and was cancelling their order". This was a $4,000.00 contract.. We couldn't believe this, he was rude and insulting. I would not recommend this location to anyone. This man with the long gross fingernails does not belong in Management or working with the public. read more
