I've been going to Tyson's Barber every three weeks for the last six years and highly recommend them. The owner and lead stylist, Susan is AMAZING. She's super sweet, always kind, and most importantly gives the best haircuts. Prior to the pandemic Tyson's Barber would have long waits cause they were so busy (worth the wait). First time visiting and needed a cut for my son. Without an appointment, we waited about 20 minutes with 2 others ahead of us. Not terrible as it was a Saturday afternoon. Our barber (did not catch her name) is the one on the right was great! After a few requests to redo or but shorter, she stayed professional and very courteous. She did the cut to what we requested and it looked great! My son stayed in his seat and engaged as they put on a kids show just for him! While my son has been coming here for many years, it was my daughter who recommended Tyson's barber after she got her first perm and style. Susan does ladies hair too! Great hair cut and beard trim! The hair stylist took her time and was very thorough best haircut experience I have ever had.

I am going to have to take a star away... I still like this barbershop/salon because it offers services that are hard to find elsewhere, and it is walking distance from me. But after going a few times, there are some cracks in the foundation. Susan is still the best one to get. She's consistently good at what she does. Unfortunately the secret is out. Because everybody wants her. And unfortunately she is never on time, so appointments that are supposed to be when they are supposed to be are not, and as a result she gets backed up with people waiting longer than they should for her. Lin or Lilly are the others I use. Unlike Susan, Lilly is very inconsistent. Usually she does a pretty good job with the haircut, but when it comes to the other stuff, it is hit or miss. One time I asked for a shave and she completely messed it up. The second time I got one from her and she was flawless. So its Jekyll and Hyde when you have her. Lin however, is awesome. She's thorough and friendly and really patient. Not one hair was left behind! Then there's this other woman. I don't know her name, but she works there every once in a while. She's rude, unprofessional, arrogant, and completely obnoxious. She seems to always be soliciting a tip and was pressing services on me I did not even want. While she did a decent job on my hair, when I asked for a shave, I thought at first she did a good job. Then I got out and felt my face, and clearly I observed that she missed several, several spots. When I got home and looked in the mirror, I looked like a total hack job! Even my sideburns were uneven. I had to end up shaving the rest myself because of a total disaster this was. I'm only giving it 3 stars because of the fact Susan really does do a good job, and Lin is really pleasant and will try to make it right - even on those wrong days. But if that woman is there the next time I go, and I don't see Susan, Lin, or Lilly, I am walking out. read more

I had been going to the same barber for a few years but checked out Tysons barber one day as the place I went to was closed for the day. I have been impressed with the service here. Quality barbers who are efficient and do a good job. As part of the regular haircut they wash your hair also which is great if you need to go back to the office right after. I have officially made the change and started coming here the last few times. The place is small but it's not an issue especially if you make an appointment. Was impressed with the stylist mastery of the straight edge. Got a head shave and not a single cut. I called for pricing was told $18. But when I came to pay was told $22. Apparently the blade is $2 extra which I dont mind, but what I minded is not being told that its extra. Will mention that she gave me the choice between trimmer or blade, I chose blade because it's a closer shave. Then asked if I'd like my head washed, I paused and thought, wash what theres no hair lol, she said to clean up. So I said sure. And boom another $2 upcharge Haha. I will definitely be back. Needed a full shave (not just a trim with a clipper) and this was the only local place I could find. Was a great find. No wait when I got their. Shave included hot shave cream, and hot towels. Also ended up with a scalp and shoulder massage. All for a very reasonable price. I'll be back. read more

Haven't gone anywhere else since the first time I came here. Though their price has increased a few bucks recently, it's still a steal for a haircut, shampoo, straight razor neck shave, and hot towel massage. It's always a very relaxing experience, and it makes for a great lunch break. Not a fan of the new stylist they hired, but the main lady (Susan) is excellent and is somehow always able to translate my lame attempt to explain what I want into a clean, perfect cut every time. read more

Fast but not rushed. I had a great experience here today. It was a small mom-and-pop-type shop and they took great care of me. Nice haircut and she was very specific about asking what I wanted before beginning. I was faces toward a flat screen and watched football while I had my hair cut - no awkward conversation. After the cut, I had my hair washed, a hot towel on my face, and a brief face massage, then she blew my hair dry and put product in. All for $20! I'll definitely be returning. I'm giving this 5 stars for Lin, who just cut my hair. I prefer to have my hair left longer overall, but I often leave the barber with hair that is MUCH too short. A lot of times they just don't understand what I want, or as in the case when I went up the road, do exactly what I told them NOT to do. However, Lin was different. I only had to tell her once, and I was amazed to find that she cut it perfectly! I'm quite particular about what I want, so I think this is impressive. Easily the best barber shop in the area! Full service with great people. I received a cut, straight-razor shave, and they washed my hair for $20. This is a great value for the money coupled with an excellent cut. I've been moving from barber shop to barber shop for a while but I think I've found my spot! I highly recommend this place! I've been coming here for over a year now and I am consistantly pleased with the result. Susan and Lilly both do a great job and are welcoming to their customers. I typically get the same hair cut, but a few times where I changed it up, I got exactly what I requested. The cut is always spot on and the straight razor trim on the neck and beard is always close and clean looking. The warm towel and neck/scalp massage are the perfect finishing touches. I have been a regular here for the last 6 months since I moved to this neighborhood. However, today I realized that these women will treat you as a second class citizen if you are NOT white. That is how Susan run's her joint. You are asked to wait if you are black or brown, claiming that the whites already had an appointment. I am a very demanding but fair customer. I give very explicit instructions on how I want my hair cut. I went here unsure of what to expect. I did not look up any reviews, as I was on a tight schedule to get to the shop before it closed. Susan is the best barber I have ever been to. She did exactly what I asked, and did it to perfection. At the end she shampooed my hair and that was a very pleasant experience. Very thorough washing, and an excellent scalp massage to boot. Then a hot towel for the face. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience quite apart from the fantastic hair cut. I am in the area on a temporary work assignment, and will definitely be back. I have now been here twice. My experience was so good the first time that I wanted to withhold my review until I went a second time to ensure that it wasn't an anomaly. I can assure you it wasn't. The woman who runs the place also cuts the hair, and she exceeds my expectations every time. Her attention to detail is remarkable. Other places I've been to charge the same price ($18) for a haircut, but you get so much more for your money here, including a hot shave on the back of my neck, a full rinse, she washes your face with a warm cloth, and even a bit of a neck massage! The place itself is pristine and clean as a whistle, with new furnishings, cable tv in HD--very comfortable. And each time I leave with an impeccable haircut. I couldn't ask for more. I went today and she had someone else working for her as her shop has gotten quite busy. The owner currently had someone in the chair so I figured what the hell, I'll go to the other lady. Big mistake. I won't bore anybody with unnecessary details so I'll just say at the end she was styling my hair and I was dumbfounded as to why she was brushing it in a completely different style. Well I figured out why when I re-styled it and found out she cut it ENTIRELY too short and it looked like someone took a #3 razor to my whole head. No wonder she cut it away from the mirror. Bottom line, I highly recommend this establishment but make sure you ask for the owner. I get my haircut from a lady named Susan. You really do get a lot for your money's worth. For $20, you get a haircut, head wash, brief head massage (during head wash), hot towel facial. Susan is great, just as long as you can explain to her what exact haircut you want. She will follow instructions literally and do a great job if you are able to instruct properly. However, if you go in and ask her to 'be creative', you will most likely find yourself disappointed. She's not an artist, and as long as you have that expectation, you're good. The place is very small and only has about a couple of seats where you can wait around (unless one of the barber chairs are unoccupied). Parking is also very tough. You might need to park in Trader Joe's parking lot (which is also almost always very crowded). I would go there again. read more

The guy "Michael" got mad at me because he kept messing up, and i kept telling him how i wanted and he just ignored me and did what he wanted until i stopped him. He got mad and started screaming in his language the shop in the middle of my haircut!!!! The other barber told me that she finish my haircut. The second barber was good, she knew what i wanted and she was nice. The first barber came back and kept screaming and i caught him cursing me couple of times! Well it has been nearly a year with Susan running the shop, and it is still as good as it was when it first opened. She is still as friendly as ever. She also hired on a new person Tang that, though not as talkative, is just as good as she is. I still go here every month to cut down my ever growing chia pet head of hair. I tried Tyson's Barber instead of my normal hair Salon in DC to try and save some time and money - and it was an awful experience. My appointment was for 12:00 with Lin, and I wasn't in a chair until 12:25. I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes after my scheduled appointment time at my normal Salon, but it seemed like they took a walk-in that came in a few minutes before me, and they didn't honor my appointment. I didn't think that was cool because they only had 2 stylists working so obviously I'd have to wait for a long time. I asked for a very light trim on the sides, and on the top a light scissor trim only, and I showed her a picture of my most recent hair cut to give her an idea. She proceeded to whack my head and side of my face with the buzzers like she was shearing a Shetland Sheepdog, and when she was trimming my neckline with the buzzers she had set the buzzer guard down so low and jammed it into my neck so hard that it shot instant pain up my neck. I didn't mention anything because I have a pretty high pain tolerance and she seemed a little upset, but almost 12 hours later there is a visible red mark along my neckline where she buzzed into my skin and left a painful mark which is still hurting fairly bad (links to pics taken 12 hours after cut below). I mean I'm not typically a crybaby, but in 10 years of hair cut maturation I've paid anywhere from $15 with-tip at SuperCuts to $65 with-tip at a high-end Salons, but I've never experienced a stylist gouging me with buzzers so bad that they left a painful red mark that's burning half a day later... The actual hair cut was not what I asked for or to the quality I expected from all the positive reviews, though I would say it was slightly above a SuperCuts quality, which isn't saying much because they typically give you a buzz-cut no matter what you ask for. The hot towel, straight razor, and 5 second shoulder rub would have been nice touches, but they didn't really matter because my neck was on fire from getting hit with the sheep shears with reckless abandon. Overall the $25 cut w/tip at Tysons Barber and shorter commute vs. the $45-65 cut w/tip and longer drive to DC was a bad experiment I won't be trying again. While I still go to my usual place in DC, this barber shop does almost as good a job. And for much less. I simply showed the barber a photo of how I usually like my hair and he said "no problem." I was worried that he was going to wreck my hair since none of the posters in his shop showed anything close to what I showed him. But just a few minutes later, he basically nailed it. Only problem was that my sideburns were a little uneven (half inch), but considering how much money I saved and I live right around the corner, I couldn't be enraged by it. I spoke to the Susan (owner) yesterday to check-in on when Tyson's Barber maybe be reopening and she stated that they plan to reopen on Friday, May 15th by Appointment Only and everyone is required to wear masks as well. During this down time with COVID-19 and the small businesses being closed she was able to have some remodeling done so the Barber Shop will have a new look as well. I've been here 6-7 times now for haircuts. And a few shaves. I generally get a haircut every 10 days (sometimes more frequently), and have since I was young, so doing the math, that means I've likely had 1500 haircuts in my lifetime. I can state definitively that Susan (the owner) gives me the best haircuts I've ever had in my life! Hands down. I get a skin fade, so if it's not just right, it's obvious, especially after a couple days. She does it perfectly. Nice, brief head/neck massage after all for $20??? I brought my 8-year old son here after visiting a friend who lives in the area. It's very warm and inviting inside, and Susan was delightful. She listened to our concerns (mainly my son's sensitive ears), and was extra gentle and careful as she cut his hair. It's huge that my son had no complaints, and he was delighted with the Italian ice he was offered afterwards. Even though this is about a 40-minute drive from where we live, we will be back. read more
