I have been a manual-mechanical typewriter collector for many years. Most of my typewriters require some type of adjustment, repair, cleaning, and tender loving care when I purchase them. As my machines are very expensive, and many of them I use on a daily basis, as a part time writer. I would not entrust this service, just to anyone. Call me old-fashioned but some things are just better done on a typewriter. My 25 plus year IBM Wheelwriter quit working. This was real problem as I use it almost daily, lucky for me though I found Andy. Not only is he just a genuinely nice person but he was unbelievably responsive, more than fair in his pricing. I needed some simple repairs made to my Dyson vacuum. I remembered these guys were located on 17th St., but when I went by the location, they had moved. Then I remembered there was somebody else out on Harbor Boulevard near Home Depot (which was where I needed to go next anyway) so that's where I went. Took my Dyson in and showed the gentleman what needed to be fixed and he said oh those parts are no longer available, you'll need to get a new vacuum, and proceeded to show me a very expensive vacuum that they sell. That made me very uncomfortable so I took my vacuum and left. How can those parts no longer be available? My Housekeeper told me that the exact same problem happened on a vacuum at another house that she works at a couple months ago and they got it repaired. Now I was more determined than ever to see if I could get mine repaired. I found out where Type-o-Meca moved to and went there. Turns out not only we're they able to make the repairs for a very reasonable cost, it was ready sooner then expected and looked as if it was fully reconditioned (super clean). Took printer to diagnose. Told would call back 4 days. Never did call. Called and said 2 more days would call and didn't. Don't keep promises. Diagnosis fee is 48. Wanted over 250 for repair of HP hime printer. Buying new was cheaper. Not sure they knew what was wrong either. When they try be jack if all trades repairing vacuums, swing machines, typewriters and printers not sure this place has the expertise to fix printers. read more

The agency I work for has been bringing our printers to be repaired here for years now. If it was up to me, we would not have returned after the first visit but I digress. Every time we bring a piece of equipment in to be repaired, they charge us between $300-$500. Within a week or two of receiving the item back "fixed", the problem continues. This has happened over, and over, and over. We could have (and should have!) just purchased all new machines for what we have paid them. And our machines are still not fixed! I would totally believe that whenever they see my coworker bringing back a machine for the umpteenth time, they probably think "Oh it's these suckers again, $$$cha ching cha ching$$$!!!" read more

Oct 7, 2017 I'm amending my review from 2 stars to 3 stars. I've been thinking about this one. Type-O-Meca is the only place (I know of) in coastal OC that cleans and repairs typewriters. And I think they do a good enough job. If they hadn't charged so much and taken longer than they originally said, I would have felt better and given them a better review. The prices are a bit steep (cite: the cost of a typewriter ribbon). They do it all--fix vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, typewriters, and your kitchen sink, probably. I put off writing this review because of my complicated feelings. The owner, Andrew, is a very nice guy, which makes this difficult. If a proprietor is nasty, it's easier to write a not incredibly positive, i.e. negative or so-so review. My first interaction was over my 1986 Kenmore sewing machine. It took for-e-ver to fix--a couple of months--for them to fix it. They kept meaning to get to it but then yes, they fixed it. Probably cost more than the machine was worth, but oh well. Then the arm was missing so we had to go back and they found an arm for the machine--not the one that originally came with it but it was something, right? Then last month I took a vintage typewriter in for a cleaning. Ended up needing $200 worth of work. And the ribbon itself was 21.00, more than twice what typewriters cost on Amazon or other online stores. The typewriter I brought in is now workable but it's still not perfect. I went back to have him fix the tabs and the 2nd time in they fixed it. It always takes longer than they originally say it's going to take. Frustrating. So do I recommend the shop for typewriters? I hear there's a better typewriter guy in Long Beach. The Fullerton shop, Business Machines, isn't as good as Typomeca in Costa Mesa. So in short, the shop is disorganized and they can fix your vintage typewriters but there may be better in Long Beach or Los Angeles if you're willing to make the drive. read more

I am a fan. We bought some replacement tape for boss' old typewriter. It took some finagling, but we figured it out. The ribbon came pre-spooled, so we had to transfer it to the typerwriter's spools, which wasn't a big deal. Price seemed OK, i guess. It worked, so that is what counts. From the looks of the store, they service typewriters (manual and digital) and network printers. The shop looks a bit disorganized, but the service is friendly. This was my first time to visit with them they looked at my Canon printer; told me what was wrong instantly; and said we can fix it in 24 hours.....and they did. It works like new; the cost was inexpensive; and they are super-nice, honest and did what they said they would do. I am totally happy with the experience I had here. Not happy. They replaced a part in my printer for $200+. Then I had to return within 10 days because the issue persisted. They "fixed it" again. But after just a few weeks of use the problem returned. Not worth the trouble or time to go back again. Should've just bought a new printer, would've cost the same. It's a bummer because I have two printers used daily for my business and if I had received good service I would've been a returning customer. But I definitely won't be going back. read more

I think they are in the business of collecting $38 for "diagnosis"! My printer has been there almost 3 weeks and no communication what the problem is or the repair cost!! I do not recommend this place for repairs of any sort. I brought my typewriter in for repair, and when I got the initial estimate, it was for $300. Since these typewriters are going on $100 on craigslist, I declined to repair the typewriter, so the owner started negotiating the price with me and we settled on $150, with the $40 initial estimate fee applied towards that, meaning I only owed $110. The mere fact that the owner was willing to lower the price from $300 to $150 dollars tells you right away how bad the owner is overcharging for his services. When I came to pick up the typewriter, the owner claimed the $40 would not be applied to the total of $150. I feel this was bait and switch and will never go back to this store, and I recommend you don't either. I will also be contesting the $40 the owner over-charged me, which at a minimum means the owner will be charged $35 by their credit card processor, and at best means the owner will also lose the $40 they over-charged me. read more

This place is a real scam. Told me they did ribbon replacement on Smith Corona. When I got there they said it would cost $18 for each machine. But when I went back to pick them up it was $70. I noticed the ribbon was wrinkled and was no longer two toned (red/black). The guy said we don't replace the roll but wind ribbon on the existing and they don't have black and red. Also, when I got home and tried it out the letters were very pale just like when I took it in Also the keys were sticking. I realize it is old and the keys need cleaning but that was always easy to do. They wanted around $300 to clean the machine. Seriously?? I would never trust these people to do anything again. Poor quality ribbon. . .what a waste of money. Really slimy liars. I would give them a minus if possible. read more

If you have an older, good printer that is now beginning to give you trouble, and you don't want to get rid of it yet, this is the place to go to. They know what they're doing. They diagnose the problem and let you know what can be done and if it should be done.
