a variety of chinese food items
    Gigi A.

I love this family-run herb store. I've been frequenting this place for over 10 years, but what finally compelled me to write this review is the young lady who helped me today. I was looking for suggestions on common cold medicine. She asked if I have a sore throat and the color of my mucus before recommending me suitable medicine based on my symptoms. I very much appreciate her willingness to help as there are many different kinds of traditional medicine with varying efficacy depending on your ailments and symptoms. Besides ginseng and tea, they also have a variety of healthy foods, dried goods and snacks. Sometimes they even have Sunny Hills and Chia Te pineapple cake from Taiwan. Need a minimum purchase of $20 for credit card transaction.

Love to come to this places as a candy store and treasure island. It's got so many things from Taiwan and China. When you need herbs. This is the place. When you need to be quenching your homesick, this is the place. The young girl can speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese to help you. They have been here for around 40 years and it is a reliable place for your need. Parking is usually right in front of the door on the street.

I have been to this herb place for traditional Chinese medicine many times. The owner and his daughter are very knowledgeable and professional. If you don't want to wait, you can order the herbs in advance via email or phone call. Absolutely will return again and recommend to friends and family.

They have all the dried Cantonese soup ingredients such as Goji berries, lotus seeds, apricot kernels, longan, jujubes, etc. The tea section is amazing. They have very good selection of loose tea leaves and a tea tasting bar. They sell tea pots and cups and other tea utensils. They also have a good variety of Chinese herbal medicine and over the counter ointment and pills. They sell Asian brands of facial cleaning products, skin care products, shampoos, and conditioners. Staff is helpful. They are mostly Cantonese and Mandarin speaking, some can speak simple English. The store is always clean and organized. Prices are reasonable even though they do carry some very expensive items especially wines and dried goods. I can easily spend a few hours here if I have the time. This is one of my most favorite places to look around.

After having my 3rd baby,…read moreI kinda half-assed the postpartum recovery that I did for my body after my first 2 kids...(for many Asians like Chinese postpartum is no joke. I took it as a joke but learned my lesson the hard way. Staying warm, not using cold water to wash hands, not drinking or eating cold stuff, staying away from using the AC for a few months. Because supposedly after you have a baby all your bones are cracked wide open and vulnerable to cold stuff to get in, trapped, and make you suffer later.) My body was in a very horrible condition even 1-2 years after childbirth. Just a little spoon of ice cream or any cold food brought about a headache almost instantaneously and overall bad feeling, there was no more ice cold smoothies, bapbimsoo, ice coffee, none of that! I drank hot Americanos even on the hottest days, steam coming out of my head and sweat dripping down my temples. Although my acupuncturist put me on the hot infrared bed to "beat the cold out" of my body a few times as well as using the needles, the red korean ginseng ($35 a bottle/ yes cheaper than amazon so don't everyone rush in here at once or i may no longer get it here at this humble price lol) this place staff recommended me really helped in kicking that plague of cold out of the ballpark. Just a tiny spoon (half a teaspoon?) everyday (I think the the daughter said), and see if it energizes you. If so, then you can keep on taking it she said. It did, and after about 3-4 months, people said I looked much better, I felt much better, and I snuck in my first iced americano without a hiccup! Still I stay away from cold food and drinks on most days because I don't want to take too many steps backward just for a brief moment on paradise, but it's a big difference to have that option open up for me again! (Note: it did give me a huge appetite boost in the beginning so no matter how much I ate I could always have more food but that was probably what my body needed to get better. I still take it 1-3 x a week to maintain. Another thing, my kids had been coughing, like it will keep going for several coughs in the morning, and then stop for the rest of the day, and no it's not covid! Turns out as the lady in the back told me, since smog and pollution tends to linger and get stuck in the air of the San Gabriel "valley," it's good to take some herbs that "moisturize" the lungs. (润肺) She suggested making my own brew of polygonati (玉竹)apricot kernels (雙马牌)and sea coconut (海底椰)。Each pack was about $6-10 but can be used 4-8 times. She said to add some apple or pear slices and/or rock sugar to sweeten up the taste and give it to the whole family. She gave me a free medicinal pack sample to try at home. I preached this gospel to her, and I got the free sample pack for the hacking cough to try at home before I buy the next time in larger quantities, so I wouldn't say getting a free sample pack is a guarantee for everyone, but just to let you know that I happened to get a free sample pack (and perhaps why) and that ended up working out for me. Yes our coughs did get better eventually, but I'm not sure if it was because of the medicinal pack. By the way the Gospel is Jesus washed away all the sins of the world, past, present, future, at the cross 2000 + years ago, that's why the Bible says you have been perfected forever. It does not say that you have to do well and then "maybe" you'll go to heaven, it says that God has perfected us forever, that's why we'll go to heaven for sure. It's completely different. One will leave us in constant condemnation, exhaustion, and being mean to everyone with "you should have," the other will leave us free inside our hearts with joy. For us to say we have sin (is to ask Jesus to come back and die again--blasphemy! and if we say we have to perfect ourselves forever until the day we die and ask for forgiveness, that is nothing short of a demonic thought implanted by the sly and slick devil. (If you keep asking Mike to give you back your book, did Mike give it back? And if Mike already gave me the book, do I need to keep asking for it? If we already received the forgiveness of sins, then do we still need to keep on praying and asking for it? And if I am praying and asking daily for the forgiveness of my sins, does that mean I received the forgiveness of sins or not? If I have not yet received the forgiveness of sins, can the Holy Spirit come onto me, let alone dare to touch me with a 10-foot pole?) If we have any doubts always go back to the word of God: Hebrews 10:14 KJV says "For by one offering we have been perfected forever." "Oh I cannot say I'm perfect, that would be outrageous and arrogant." Who am I trusting, the word or myself? Are we more right? Then we can't accept it. However if life is tough and beats us up that we have no more strength to say no, then yes we are perfect forever, thank you Jesus. Then mission accomplished for God.

The ginseng jar was less than half full (see photo), yet it was sold as a premium, discounted item. The quantity was extremely small for the price, and the quality did not match the cost at all--the texture was rough and not pleasant to consume. More recently, when buying tea, the staff had a bad attitude. The store usually advertises 20% off, but I was told there was no discount that day unless I bought more than 3 pounds, and even then it was only 10% off. At $149.99 per pound, that's unreasonable for an individual buyer. Pricing and promotions feel inconsistent and misleading. I recommend being very cautious and comparing elsewhere before buying.

I have many memories as a kid wandering around the location over in Chinatown, and the fact that it no longer exists still baffles me. While there is more competition these days from other smaller emporiums and supermarkets, it is still worth coming in for the ease of shopping for Chinese herbs, teas, snacks, tableware, and kitchen appliances. Background music selection mixes between English and Chinese songs, much like how the ladies speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and English well and provide a wealth of knowledge in figuring what herbs you'll need depending on the soup. I had in mind to make a soup for hot summer heat, which included northern/southern almonds, dried figs, lotus seeds, honey dates, huai shan, and luo han guo. Everything was there conveniently pre-packaged or sold by weight. Comparing the prices with the few over in 99 Ranch, I noticed the prices here are cheaper and more plentiful.

It's also filled with a light, soft cream. DELICIOUS! I arrived at Old Ferry Donut (San Gabriel) on a Wednesday (around 3:42PM). Parking is simple. There's a competitive customer parking lot. And there's a city public parking lot about a two minute walk away. Staff is very friendly, professional, and welcoming. Staff maintained a bright smile throughout my visit. Staff immediately helped me. Customers can order at the self-service kiosk or counter; however, the kiosk felt very dated & the prices on the kiosk felt less transparent. I recommend just ordering at the counter. There's no penalty for using card at this donut establishment. As mentioned, I love the Tiramisu Donut ($4.95). It's not too sweet; rather, it all felt balanced. However, this is a VERY messy donut; I recommend eating this donut with a fork and knife. The powder fall everywhere, and your clothes can quickly get stained with chocolate powder. Still, it's a delicious pastry. On ambiance, Old Ferry Donut (San Gabriel) is comfortable. This business is more reminiscent of a cafe than a typical donut shop. There's customer internet with password; details on the counter. There's a gender neutral restroom. And there's an electrical outlet & outlet adaptor for devices. The location is fairly small; there's one interior table and one small counter. Fortunately, this place felt airy and well-ventilated. There's also some upbeat, fun music in this clean spot. Overall, I found unexpected joy at Old Ferry Donut (San Gabriel). There's sincere passion & hard work within these walls.
