Even just getting to the parking lot was a bit hairy with all the sharp turns and narrow roads! We felt super confident after crossing the first creek: easy peasy! We didn't realize there were more creek crossings and debated trying to cross the 2nd one; we weren't sure if we were even going in the right direction. Thankfully, we had some walking sticks (or "trekking poles") which I used to stabilize myself on some of the slippery and wobbly rocks. Tons and tons of flies and what seemed like an hour later (mostly because we weren't sure where to go), we arrived at the glorious rocks! Hearing the wind through the rocks and the brush was lovely and walking on these beautiful natural formations was calming. We didn't have some of the transformational experiences that some say they have had, but it was a lovely hike. It was nice to not see literally one other person while we were out there (only two other cars in the parking lot and I have no idea where they went, lol!). Thursday morning in October for the win! And much faster to get back, once we knew where we were going!

The air is crisp and cool, bring a warm layer for sure. And, as always, pack it in pack it out, and leave it better than you found it.

If you can weather the whole hike up to the punch bowls, you won't regret it! Lots of maneuvering rocks and it can get sketchy at some times. But there are plenty of families and furry friends that take this hike so that should give you an idea about difficulty. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen and you will be fine. You might step in some water crossing a pond or two so bringing an extra pair of socks wouldn't be a bad idea either. Have fun and don't leave your trash behind!

EASY & PLEASANT A.M. HIKE IN SANTA PAULA!…read more We were looking for an option to get some steps in, while our son took his S.A.T. in Santa Paula on a Saturday Spring season morning. "All Trails" app showed us a few options, and we ultimately chose this option to get a view of the Santa Clara River, up close. Yelp directions are on point and is a short drive off the 126 Hwy. Once you pass the entry gate there is a designated parking area that includes handicapped parking (cement rather than gravel) as well. TRAIL: The loop and tail of the trail together is about 2.2 miles and the tail (back and forth) comprises about 0.9 miles of it. Elevation is minimal (13ft). I am a mosquito magnet and I did not prep with bug repellent. I was pleasantly surprised I did not get one bug bite on this trail!!! Wahoo! Lots of gnats are flying around so look up and keep your eyes off your phone lol The trail is designated with rocks and/or gravel. Although you cannot see The River from The Loop, there is a short offshoot from the loop that gives you a clear river view at the end of it. No wild animals were seen during our walk. There was quite a few wildflowers in bloom and South Mountain was a healthy green from the recent rains. Boom, Got my Steps in! EASY RECOMMENDATION for a low impact hike outside to keep you in the fat burning zone and synthesize some Vitamin D in the sunlight! Enjoy!

It's not everyday a new nature preserve opens - and especially not in densely populated SoCal! But…read morewe got a new one this year - the Santa Clara River Preserve officially opened back in January thanks to the years-long efforts of The Nature Conservancy! The preserve is a haven for wildlife amongst all the farm fields and small towns - especially for the migratory birds! It consists of 1000 acres of wetland, river bed, and upland habitats. There are several trails here - the river trail, wildflower trail, and wetland trail. It's about 0.3 miles from the entrance to any of the trailheads. The river trail is less than 1/2 mile long out and back but the length changes depending on how much water the river has flowing at the moment. The wetland trail is 1 mile out and back and has lots of harvester ant beds and snakes so be very careful where you step! The wildflower trail is a 0.8 mile loop. The trails are moderately well maintained and don't have much elevation gain. But they are sandy and uneven in places - especially where flooding has occurred. I'd call these trails easy but definitely not handicap accessible. And I recommend bear spray - I definitely saw more than a few mountain lion tracks! I loved the river trail the most - but my biggest disappointment is that there's very little access to the river views. You get two small viewpoints with limited viewing due to the plant growth - but still, it's lovely and this preserve is for the wildlife - not us humans lol! Also, the banks of the river are treacherous- sandy, steep, and prone to sudden erosion - and the Santa Clara River is fast flowing - so I can see why they limit our access. It's not completely peaceful unfortunately- The surrounding area is all agricultural machines and noise that sometimes drowns out the bird song. But it's still a lovely place to visit and heaven if you're a birder! I saw tons of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, hummingbirds, finches, yellow warblers and more - even a couple of endangered Least Bell's Vireo and some new lifers too - the Yellow-breasted Chat and a rare Lark Sparrow!! The grounds have a decent sized amphitheater and offer educational and outreach programs for school groups. The parking lot is all gravel but well maintained and there's a portapotty available. It's free to enter and open dawn to dusk.

One the most distinguished is the looming mountain range visible from all points north of the Grade, known as the Topa Topa Bluffs. The granite cliffs mark pronounced diagonal etches across the mountains face. Often when one thinks of going to the mountains, these are the mountains one had in mind. Usually when venturing into the Los Padres National Forest the highest Mecca available is Reyes Peak atop Pine Mountain road, and that is where we often end up. Indeed Reyes Peak is a sight to behold, and arguably one of the best campsites in the tri counties. But to truly reach "those mountains" the Topa Topa Bluffs, you have to do your homework. You cannot simply drive up the "33" and get there like you can with Reyes Peak. Access is available by permit only, through the Ojai Ranger station. The road to the bluffs is OHV access only; therefore a locked gate bars access from the general public. The ranger district only allows 15 vehicles up per day. Unbelievably, after roaming these mountains for decades, I had never been to the Bluffs. But a year ago, I did some research and found the way to get to the Bluffs. Once I had my permit, and access code, I headed into the forest. Arriving at the gate, I felt like a kid with a backstage pass to Disneyland. As I unlocked the gate, headed thru and locked from behind, I felt the puzzled stares from other less fortunate campers. They didn't have access! Huahhhh...Hauuhhhh! Only I did, I alone had domain over this sacred land! Sorry, back to reality. I engaged four wheel drive, and proceeded to tear up the road. There are miles and miles of off road travel to be enjoyed, steep ascents, and uneven road abound. Off the main road it splits to the left or right. To the right the road leads to a old fire watchtower. Convivebly you could camp here, but there is one site with a fire ring and bench a few miles before you get to the tower. Taking the road to the left your journey hugs the mountain edge then dips into the valley for unspoiled views of Pierda Blancas, and Rose Valley Lake. Once on the mountain edge the road ends at a trail head that will take you directly to the Topa Topa Bluffs. A mile before the road ends there is the one singular campsite. From the site, you have clear views of the Oxnard Plain, the Ojai Valley, and the Bluffs themselves, so close you can make out the diagonal ruts visible form the city. On May 23rd 2008 I visited the Bluffs for the second time. The weather did not cooperate and while we did stay the night, the temperature stayed at an icy 36f degree. Visibility was only 15-20 feet, so we did not get the views I have loved. I cannot wait to return. The solitude of the place inspires meditation, with only 2 campsites off the entire road, you can be assured privacy and silence. Just you and the bluffs.

Beautiful trail within Lake casitas…read more This trail is relatively easy with about 5.7 miles (total) of beautiful scenery and some up and down small inclines. The single path makes it easy to follow without worrying of wondering off the trail and getting lost. The end of the trail rewards you with a beautiful view of the lake below. If you're lucky you'll get to see a deer or two crossing. Some cotton tail rabbits or see some of the birds of prey or Turkey vultures flying by. Good for running or walking and open year round, except when it's too muddy after rain. They try to preserve the trails. No bathrooms in the actual trail but at the beginning of the trail (where the large parking area is and a basketball court, too) they have restrooms that are kept up.

The beauty and quality of this trail vary greatly depending on how much rain has recently fallen…read more(which tends to be rare). Normally, I consider this trail a solid 3-stars, mostly for the views from the top. However, the recent fires that hit this mountain, followed by abundant rainfall has created an explosion of color! The trail is moderately easy for most of the length, with a few fairly steep sections. Suitable for any age group other than young children. The initial climb is steep and leads to a "T". Go right for the longer gentler ascent or go left for the steep and shorter climb (you can also just do a loop, in which case I recommend climbing the steep ascent and walking down the gentler slope). The gentler ascent actually has notably better views. Ocean views, the naval air field, and one of the most scenic stretches of the PCH in California await. If adventurous, take the 6-mile loop trail around the summit before ascending. Gorgeous flowers (after a spring rain), mountain vistas, and various wildlife (including rattlesnakes)

Entry into this 600-acre preserve is limited to those who can make it up a steep oceanfront…read moremountain trail. The 0.9-mile Chumash Trail is located off PCH, across from a Navy Seabee shooting range. It is the most direct route and also happens to be the oldest trail in continuous use in the Santa Monicas. A farther, an more indirect route, is from Ray Miller Trailhead at Thornhill Brooke Beach via La Jolla Canyon Trail. The valley is sprawling mountain meadow circled by mountain ridges with Boney Mountain in the background. Chumash Indians inhabited this area for over for 7,000 years. It's located next to Mugu Peak which has become extremely popular since I last visited. Both destinations start with the Chumash Trail. At the top of the mountain the majority of the crowd bears right at a junction, heading towards Mugu Peak. You will need to continue straight and shortly you will soon be in almost complete solitude. With the solitude also comes the eerie reminder that you are also in mountain lion territory. The main trails of the preserve are La Jolla Valley Loop Trail and La Jolla Canyon Trail. They branch off in different directions allowing access to 70 miles of hiking trails within Point Mugu State Park. Over the northern section of the loop there is La Jolla Valley Walk-In Camp and a nearby pond. In my opinion the most important landmark along La Jolla Valley Loop Trail is the old water tank located under an oak tree at the base of the mountain near a dry creek. It's located at 6 o'clock along the loop (for reference the Chumash Trail enters at 9 o'clock position). This is the point where you can either cross the creek to ascend the mountain, continuing on Mugu Peak Trail, back to Chumash Trail. This way overlooks the ocean and has some great scenic views. You can also complete the La Jolla Valley Loop Trail in a clockwise direction and link back up with the Chumash Trail or you can continue on a little further and head down the canyon via La Jolla Canyon Trail to Thornhill Broome Beach. Unfortunately, there are no bathrooms and dogs are not allowed in the park. Parking is free but it can be really crowded on the weekends so you may want to arrive early.
