Gray Drake Lodge is NOT closed! My 8 year old grandson and I visited on 9/14/18 for a phenomenal…read moreexperience! This trip was a birthday gift to me from my wife. Perhaps one of the best gifts I have ever received. Our hosts, Matt and Laurie, were amazing. A few days before our arrival, Matt called to ask about food and accommodation preferences. The breakfasts Laurie prepared were so special, my we texted pics to Mom. Matt also put a great deal of thought and time into preparing food for our time on the river. Then came fly fishing! I could not have scripted a better experience or imagined a better guide/instructor. While I went to a fly fishing instruction weekend years ago, we are novices. You will never find a better person to learn from. Without a doubt, Matt is one of the best! More importantly to me as a grandpa, was the attention, patience and real interest he had in teaching my grandson. Before our two days were over, he caught 5 fish and several more that got away! (I caught a few, and would have caught more, except for the joy I had watching my grandson learn from Matt). His knowledge and teaching skills are remarkable. His ability to give such attention to an 8 year old for 5 hours a day for two days, and at the same time keep an eye on me and give me valuable advice was priceless. As a B&B, Gray Drake is excellent. As a fly fishing experience and a learning experience, all I can add is that the memories will be with my grandson and I for life!

I happened to read the previous review on this Lodge and I felt compelled to write a review myself…read more Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions and that is great-however I feel the woman who wrote the review kind of missed the point that it is a fly fishing lodge not just a B and B. She must have never stayed at this type of bed and breakfast to not know that everything she was complaining about it how every fly fish lodge is structured. Fly fishing lodges are catered to Fly fishermen and like myself Fly fisherwomen. It is a place where people do like to hear stories about fishing and fish that has been caught. It is also a place where food is part of the experience and they cater you while you stay. It is part of the price you agree to pay before you stay at a bed and breakfast. I stayed at this lodge with my husband this past week for our honeymoon. It was nothing less than amazing. Matt the owner and his wife take their lodge very seriously and when they were in the living area it was far away from the guests and they were cleaning up after us. They were never there to socialize or interrupt, they were simply keeping order in the lodge so that everything looked appealing to their guests. I find it interesting that a guest would complain about the owner wanting to acknowledge their guests. Matt and his wife were always very pleasant and professional. We never once felt uncomfortable. Their lodge was so clean and organized-just a breathtaking place to stay id you love fly fishing and the outdoors. We had such a wonderful experience here at this lodge and we are already planning on when we can visit again. The room we stayed was the master room suite. I will post a picture so you can see-it was so beautiful and the architecture was very unique. Right outside the door was a Jacuzzi overlooking the river which was such an unexpected bonus (which I may add was never advertised so I am not sure why the woman on the previous review was complaining, since it was she didn't even know they had one until she got there...). Matt himself took us fly fishing on his DAYS OFF. We thought that was really fun. He was so helpful and was great at giving direction when we needed it (and I needed it a lot). My husband is an avid fly fisher and we have been to many lodges. He was very impressed with the whole experience we had with him. I highly suggest staying here if you are looking to fish in Michigan. I also highly suggest not staying here if you want to be antisocial and complain like the last review-if you want to stay at a cold place with cold people, go to a motel. THIS IS A FLY FISHING LODGE. Not sure if you will see this Matt, but thank you and your wife for such an awesome time and awesome food and fishing! We absolutely will be back.

They've had a lot of cyclists stay with them, though I was likely wetter and muddier than their usual client. Fortunately I was the only guest that night (I just missed a family with seven children), so I took over the upstairs bathroom to wash and dry myself and my gear. Sure, a hotel room would also have served, but I felt so much cheerier in a cozy, friendly home after that long day. They are very nice and down-to-earth folks. They'll have breakfast ready when you want it (just tell her the night before) and will have you feeling like you're part of their family. During breakfast I learned about what several of their 19 grandchildren are up to, and a visiting great-granddaughter joined us too. This place is an incredible value at $60.00 per night, and I will definitely stay there again if I'm in the area. Note: This is their home, so don't expect it to be like a hotel. I don't think they have wifi, and only one bedroom has a TV. Spend some time sharing stories with them instead. Note 2: Call at least a day ahead to be sure they have a room available for you. They are often unable to accommodate drop-ins.

What a nice place to stay! I stayed at this B&B from June 24 to 28 and couldn't have asked for a…read morebetter B&B experience. At $60 a night its a fantastic deal, and if you're lucky Grandma will make French toast on the same thick, sesame seed bread as she did for me. Keep in mind the owners actually live in the house unlike many B&B's, but in my opinion this was not a problem as they were friendly and welcoming but not bothersome. Cozy, clean, and a great deal. Thumbs up!!

Pros- there was plenty of space for our group of 20+ people to spread out on the property.  We had plenty of room for parking and were only a mile from a grocery store when we needed supplies. There were plenty of bath towels for our use and the AC on the second floor worked well.  There were board games, books and yard games for our group to use. Cons- the property felt rundown and neglected.  The lawn was too high when we arrived and was never mowed during the week we were there. Since we planned to spend a lot of time outside this was disappointing.  The deck on the Lake House is in need of serious repair.  There were pots full of dirt and weeds scattered around and the landscaping was so overgrown we could barely see the lake when sitting on the furniture.  There are some very soft spots in the decking that I was worried someone might actually go through.  The kitchen has an apartment size stove/oven which we were not expecting. The oven wouldn't even fit a standard baking sheet. Our kitchen seemed to be missing a lot of items: can opener, spatulas, a large bowl for mixing, sauce pans, etc.  We also didn't have a single clothes hanger in any of our closets or any floor fans, even though we were told there was at least one for us to use. We were told things get moved around from house to house when groups stay there, which is understandable. I think they need a list of basic items that should be in the house when the cleaning is done so it's ready for the next guests though. Luckily we knew the people in the other rentals and could borrow things from them. The AC on the main floor did not work well. The showers/bathtubs need to be updated.  The grout was stained/dirty and the shower head on the main floor bath was the smallest one I've ever seen.  The living room was a good size but so full of furniture it was hard to move around.  There are also electrical cords running along the walls on both sides of the TV.  You can tell they had to run those for the TV hook ups which is fine, but could be a problem if you have little kids in your group.  None of the outdoor spaces on the property were very well kept up or inviting places to hang out. Overall I feel like it was a good home base if you are going to spend the majority of your time offsite. This property has tremendous potential and would make an awesome small event venue if repairs were made and the grounds were properly cared for. If I was looking for a property for a group of 20-25 people I would stay here again because it is hard to find a place to accommodate that many people. But if I were looking for a place for just my family I would stay elsewhere.

For starters Ernie and Vivian were incredible host, honestly made us feel right at home the second we walked in. The Inn itself, is the perfect combination of old and new, well preserved antiques with modern amenities. We stayed in the spinning wheel room and it was very nice. Of course seeing threw the tub, into the bathroom, from the bedroom, wasn't a typical accommodation we understood that it was a temporary fix. They are planning on remolding the bathroom throughout the house soon. On the other hand, the bed was pretty rough. I hate to mention anything negative about this place but I had to at least prepare you for your sleep. Saying it's hard, would be an understatement. If they were to update the mattresses around the time they are planning on the bathrooms this would be in my top 3 B&B's we have stayed at. It's still in my top 5, but the bed is holding it back. However once you wake up crack your back and stretch out a bit you quickly forget there could've been anything wrong. The breakfast was a decadent feast with homemade jam, whipped cream, and even maple syrup. Then to burn it all off, there beautiful home is located on 127 acres of even more beautiful woods equipped with trails for easier walking. We will definitely be staying here again if we are even remotely close to this area again. Thank you Ernie and Vivian!
