I had the pleasure of staying here on a last-minute business trip. My innkeeper Eric was very passionate and knowledgeable about the history of this home. He prepared a beautiful light breakfast for my early start of the day. My room was the telephone room. The bed was very comfortable and the focal wall had restored wood from the local telephone company. The room hosted other nostalgic telephone paraphonilia as well. I was so pleased with my stay I made sure to let others in the same business know what a great place to stay this was. I will keep this at the top of my list for the next time I am in the area. This was an ok place to stay, not wow just ok. The Innkeeper was gracious and very accommodating. She bent over backwards to make our stay welcoming and even printed a map of the area we were traveling to after leaving from there. We stayed in the Garnet Room and it was tiny. The pictures online did look small, but we didn't think it would be that small. The bed was the really bad part of our stay, it was very hard and sticky, like you couldn't get really comfortable and sheets stuck to you when you tried to move, or turn over. I guess I'm used to smoother sheets. The breakfast was very good, except for the coffee. I had homemade pancakes with fresh Michigan blueberries, wow! Hashbrowns, bacon and scrambled eggs were all hot and fresh. The selection of yoghurt was delicious too. The was an assortment of breads, fruit and cereals that we didn't even touch. Again the coffee tasted like basic unbrand cruddy dark water, but everything else at breakfast was amazing. read more

I originally posted this a while back but since the owner (I believe his name is Eric) did not want to make this situation right I had to repost it with the pictures for proof. Health hazards are very serious. We had to leave our anniversary early because after a few nights I could not stop coughing. I had this cough for over four months and had to see a pulmonologist and get on a breathalyzer. As I write this right now I have coughed over ten times in the last ten minutes. I also had a headache every single night. This does not normally happen to me. The managers mentioned to me that they have tried to get the owner to clean the air ducts because they have had other people complain about this same issue. They have tried to get the owner to clean the air ducts but it hasn't happened yet. I do not know how this place has passed code regulations. All night you will be coughing if you stay in this place. Even after you leave you will still be coughing. This in no way should be allowed. When the AC runs it leaves mold and bacteria on the ducts and those need to be cleaned regularly so that you don't have all the bacteria all over the place infecting customers. I posted pictures so you can see how dusty and unclean it was. If you don't want any respiratory issues whatsoever I would not stay here. The owner made me email him the pictures and told me that he was going to consider refunding me after I saw the doctor. It never happened. He said I was lying. He ruined our anniversary and vacation. He did not want to make it right. The owner will probably post here an apology to make everyone think he cares but he doesn't. Look at the pictures and judge for yourselves. Do not stay here! If the owner truly wants to make amends then he will ask me for my details and refund me actual money, not leave a silly comment about being sorry and cleaning the ducts. A good business knows how to make things right. Please don't post a response here if you will not make it right. read more

Wow! This place was spectacular! Hostess was gracious, room is beautiful, breakfast is fantastic. Most definitely be back!

My husband and I went for an anniversary weekend and had a wonderful time. The innkeeper was so friendly and very accommodating, we felt catered to. Place was very clean and cozy, loved the history of the B &B. We had great breakfast and fabulous homemade bread. Enjoyed a bonfire at night and coffee on porch. Strolled the town and ate in Brewery, cafe, and Sportsman and all were very friendly and enjoyable. Loved the kayaking and walking bike trail. Colors were nice and even saw salmon swimming upstream. Highly recommend this quaint little town and B & B and all very reasonable. read more

We showed up at 4:30am and received an open arm treatment, got a terrific rate and served a delicious home cooked meal for breakfast. This was my first bed and breakfast experience of my life and it has been nothing but pleasurable. Experienced some issues with my commercial vehicle and was assisted in every possible way to reach an effective resolve. I could be more thankful to end up here of all the places in Newaygo, MI. I would not stay anywhere else but here if I ever visit the area again. read more

We had a great stay here. It's a beautiful, romantic mansion where my husband and I both felt at home and comfortable. I spent one afternoon reading one of the many books they had available. An easy walk to the river, and next door to some great bars, restaurants and antique stores. It was all we wanted in a bed and breakfast: comfortable room with a cozy bed, beautiful surroundings and great breakfasts. But also had the added bonus of a great history: the hotel was owned by Al Capone's Lawyer! We look forward staying here again! read more

I stayed in the Antique Blue room for four nights. I had some of the best sleep of my life. I had shows and events to attend until late, and was able to get back to my room easily with my keys. I didn't have breakfast all four days since I slept in, but Rod and Liz were happy to accommodate my schedule. They made sure I never left the house without food and coffee. I would have loved to hang out more with them. This place has so much to offer in the summer months, but is also perfect for being snowed in and just being cozy and lazy. I was also a little worried about parking with all the snow but they had private parking which was plowed, and they shoveled snow daily. They went to a lot of trouble to make sure the place was clean and relaxing during my stay, even with me being the only guest. My travel plans were all in Grand Rapids so I didn't get to spend much time in Newaygo but I'd love to come back in the summer and explore all the outdoor adventures. Some other highlights, the food was great. Since I was alone I could go into the kitchen and make a snack whenever I needed anything. Even took bagels on the road with me. Rod is a splendid cook and takes great care to make each dish from scrambled eggs to hash browns special and out of the ordinary. During our breakfasts they told me about the rich history of the town and the inn with ties back to lumber barons and Al Capone. He really knows his stuff! I also super appreciated how fast and reliable the wifi was. I was able to steam movies and do everything I needed. I would definitely come back and bring friends and family. This would be a perfect place to have a family reunion. read more

My wife and I stay at around 4-5 Bed and Breakfasts in any given year. This was definitely our worst experience. We booked a room for 2 nights but left after the first night asking for a refund on our second night (which the owners refused to do). Allow me to explain. Upon arrival, we were shown to our room and told that we didn't need a room key, only the keys to the front and back doors to the main house. We were told that the front door would be locked at 11 PM. It seems very strange to us, even in a remote setting, but the innkeepers are not concerned about the security of their guests. Upon entering the room, we noticed that the chair by the door was fully gashed open to its stuffing and that two short stained dirty rugs were on either side of the bed. The room was already hot as the air conditioner, if it was working, delivered no air conditioning to our room or any other on the floor. We started the ceiling fan moving for minimal relief on a humid July evening. By morning, the room was still intolerably humid. Entering the bathroom, we discovered a large mildew spot on the ceiling just above the bathroom door and the congested (filled with wet dust) bathroom exhaust fan was having difficulty moving any air out of the room. The bathroom was a large converted closet, but whoever did the fixtures used a mixture of bathroom fixtures of varying finishes (gold, silver, pewter). The tub was not clean and the caulk around the tub was in poor repair. I have photos of all of this to post on another review site. Back in the main room, the room was overcrowded with non-matching furniture. The posts on the four poster bed blocked any view of the TV from the bed, though ostensibly the TV was positioned to be viewed from the bed. One's only option to see the TV was to sit at an odd angle from a black futon couch crowding the room's entry. If you have ever been in Newaygo, you understand why we did not leave immediately. There are not a ton of options in driving distance. Breakfast was a watered down version of coffee, scrambled eggs that had been hastly cooked and dried in a crock pot, undercooked bacon, and white plain french toast (serve yourself). One certainly would not go back for the breakfast in this B&B. For some of us, the second "B" means something in B&B! We prepared to leave the next morning listing our concerns with the visiting inn keepers (the Adgates were not there but had enlisted friends to run the place in their absence). We explained that the room was not comfortable enough to warrant another night's stay and that we were asking for a refund on the second night as we did not feel that the value received and the condition of the room were inferior. We politely told them that we were not comfortable staying in the room for another night and that we were leaving that A.M. We agreed that paying for one night was acceptable, but that the we felt that the second night fee should be returned to us. The guest hosts apologized, said they understood and would pass our request on to the owners. I later emailed the owners to ask whether they would honor our request due to the circumstances we described. Received the following in reply: John, I am sorry you where (sic) not happy with your stay at the B&B. The reason you gave is not a reason to leave early. I can understand this policy from a Business standpoint. Cancellations can mean lost revenue. However, when a customer finds something deficient in an accommodation, some consideration is due as to when one arrives to inspect the site and finds it deficient. I was not asking for both nights to be refunded, only the one night I did not plan to spend in the B&B. I feel it is only right to post this review in consideration of others who may be taken advantage of at this B&B. Caveat emptor. read more
