I've passed by this store a thousand of times but decided to finally stop in and wish I've done it sooner. I was looking for a birthday gift for my friend and thought she'd appreciate some aromatherapy. I loved the vibe I felt upon entering. The staff were super friendly and very helpful. They offer tinctures, candles, crystals and so much more. I ended up getting my friend the Palo Santo scented candle and myself some soap and hemp gummies to start. I came here to check out their crystal shop. I really enjoyed their small collection of crystals. However, I felt like there was some negative vibes surrounding the crystals and I wasn't quite sure why. The prices were very overpriced for crystals. I found that I could get the same crystals at a cheaper price on Etsy. Everything was simply a transaction at the store. The crystals are also heat-treated to obtain beautiful coloring. Stopped by Twisted Thistle to just look around today, it's been a looong while since I've been in this area and I was glad to see quarantine didn't take out another small business. I walked in and was immediately greeted at the door by a very kind and helpful employee. I looked around for quite a while, trying my best to not buy every piece of amethyst in sight (lol) but didn't feel pressured to hurry up by either of the employees present. I took a long gander at the wall full of powdered spices and herbs before my eyes landed on the Lit Ritual candles. I have been following that small business for FOREVER on Instagram and was so excited to see the candles stocked in Twisted Thistle, so I immediately grabbed a pair! TL;DR - We came here for some herbs but walked out with a great experience with their tarot card reader, Magick. Apothicaire is a lovely, bright store with tons of products for your divination practice. They have tons of herbs, incense, books, and random knick knacks. If you're looking for "The only astrology book you'll ever need" they have it here. We also discovered they had tarot card readings that day by a woman whose name is Magick. She's actually a written a book too. Tarot's are not meant to be "predictions" or some hoot n nany, but rather just telling you how it is. She asked about important dates for myself and those closest around me. And she made me feel validated for the wedding date I'd chosen. A lot of what she said about the reading should be taken as "it is" / face value (you get what you get out of your readIngs), like my career and potential challenges, or how to deal with my Aries mother as an Aries myself (haha). I went with a friend just looking for something unique as a gift and found all the right things. ..I had some questions about personal use of some herbs and tinctures that I didn't want to trust to a google search and the woman at the counter was very open and very helpful. The ceramic mugs they have from a local artist are so beautiful! I use mine a lot and highly recommend grabbing one. --one thing I think would be very helpful is putting suggested dosages on powder packs so people less knowledgeable about the herbs can approach them safely.. especially the blends. I really appreciated the displays of the crystals. One of my crystals had a price mark of 11.00. When paying at the counter the clerk removed the price (left the sticky part of the sticker on) and charged 15.00 for it. He did not talk to me about it, I realized it after reviewing my receipt and saw the crystal after I had left the store. I didn't think that was right. If the price changed, talk to the customer about it, but don't just change the price at your will. That was the one negative thing that outweighed the stores positive energy. read more

It's a pretty nice shop on Haight! The crystal selection is quite nice; all the stones look beautiful. The store may have a polished gentrified feel to it, but it actually has some good stuff that goes way beyond smudge sticks and amethyst clusters. What's also quite interesting is that there are a lot of crystals that have polished points, so if you're into that (such as placing it as the centerpiece of your crystal grid), this place is quite good. The prices are a little bit high, but at the same time, the crystal quality is high too. Some crystals here aren't easily found on eBay or Etsy in a certain size or shape. Also, you don't have to pay for or wait for shipping, AND you get to pick and feel which ones you want to take home with you. (Personally, I buy online if I want large, singular specimen.) That being said, I think it's 100% worth it to check out Love of Ganesha; I think the two stores complement each other in terms of crystal selection. There are some stones that LOG has that are cheaper than here, and vice versa. There are also crystal gridding boards for a reasonable price here, too. There's also another crystal grid store on Haight, so check both out if you're shopping around for that. The adaptogens and nootropics seem legit as well; I have tried a couple of them. Wish the packaging could use less plastic or something, though. Customer service is generally pretty nice, though it can feel a little awkward at times. Some reps really go out of their way to help you out and give you recommendations. But it also doesn't seem like they recognize me even though I've shopped there a couple times, which is a bit of a bummer since I live in the neighborhood. (shrug). I took my daughter here for her 14th birthday to do the Haight and Ashbury experience this was the first place we stopped after parking near Hippy Hill. Let me tell you they had this Covid thing down by the science. 4 people at a time must wear masks and Sanitize hands before entering the store. I was in awe and shocked on how elegant this store was and how they created a five-star experience. This is no dirty hippie shop very clean non pushy non annoying sales/clerks. They gave you your space as you shopped around and very knowledgeable and all of their products. They were very sweet and even said happy birthday to my daughter. I couldn't wait to come here! I wanted some magic potions to put some pep in my step! I'm all into herbs and holistic medicine. The young lady at the counter was so awesome! She educated me on the different combinations of herbs they had to offer. I purchased the Yerba Mate, Alkalize, turmeric and Nervous System Reset. I've used all spices and I haven't see any significant changes except for the turmeric. I made a scrub with sugar and coconut oil and yes it turned my skin a golden yellow which I loved! Ok ok...I also took a bath in it "we" my bf and I took a bath in it! My bf is Italian with a light complexion so he turned YELLOW! His grey hair was yellowish green in the morning! I haven't laughed so hard in years! I'm not sure if any of these concoctions worked but I'm going to keep on trying! I love the Haight and will definitely go back! Go check them out! read more

Today I ventured into the Oakland store and as soon as I walked in I felt so light. The loving energy that the gentleman employee brought to work with him was so peaceful! If you're in the Haight, you're used to places that sell knock-knacks... even, shall we say, items of lower-than-average quality. The Twisted Thistle is not one of those places. It's a cute little shop with high quality goods. The person working there seems very knowledgeable, kind, and approachable. I didn't talk directly to her, but eavesdropping is my superpower. They have a number of powders and herbal remedies which I found quite interesting. From stress to high blood pressure there are a number of offerings that are worthy of further investigation. Again, if you have a question about any of these you can ask the person working there and they should be able to talk to you about them... including potential interactions with other medicine, other medical conditions, and advice as to the best way to consume / imbibe the remedy. I can't speak to the effectiveness of said remedies. Cacao / energy / tonics... and I've been told if there's something you don't see, you just need to ask and they can get it / find it / make it for you. They also offer some jewellery that is quite beautiful and possibly / probably hand-made. The store itself was clean. It also did not have any overpowering smells in there... something I *greatly* appreciate. And lots of fun / random knick-knacks too! If you're in the area, give the Twisted Thistle a quick gander. A friend had recommended this location and I was excited to come here. I made the trip on a Wednesday afternoon from the East Bay all the way over here, found parking, arrived at the door where the sign of the door said "open" and it said that they are open seven days a week during the regular hours of business. However, the store was closed, no one was in the store, there was no sign on the door, and there I was at 2 PM very irritated that I had driven all the way from El Cerrito to the store in San Francisco only to find that it was closed for no clear reason on a random business day. read more

Aaron was super helpful and the girl that was with him (forgot her name but she closed the with him on on Fri 11/15) was knowledgeable as hell. Super nonjudgmental, so welcoming, amazing people. Went in a few weeks ago to get St. John's herb after seeing it in stock on their website. Turns out it wasn't in stock and the cashier claimed it was discontinued and the website isn't in use/not up to date. What kind of fucking herbal shop doesn't have St.John's wort??? Ended up having my boyfriend going to WALGREENS to pick me up some. Considering local groceries, pharmacies and big box stores sell herbal products, step up your pisspoor business practices. Good store normally to pick up the unusual stuff that they sell. However this is the third time I have driven 45 minutes only to have an "out to lunch" sign on the door. Unbelievable, who does this? It's 5:15PM and the sign says gone they're gone until 5:50. So yeah if you want to risk driving to give them business also risk the store being closed. I was standing outside the door for 10 minutes before I left and 3 other people walked by trying to get in and were like "wtf?!". Terrible business practice. Be open when the store says you're open. I really liked this shop, it was intriguing from the outside looking in, so I wandrered in... Lots of awesome holistic type of natural stuff in powdered form. I saw kava powder, goiji berries etc.. all types of stuff.. Another cool thing I saw was vegan capsules, so you can buy multiple natural herbs in powder form and make your own pills... Its a unique concept, never seen a store like this... I got some cool incense and incense holders... The gal at the counter was super nice! extremely informative of the products carried in the store. People were bombarding her with questions, and she didn't stress out she was super chill... Love the idea behind this business.. Oop, SUPER twisted vibez in Twisted Thistle Apothicaire shop... Get it, twisted? Lol. I've been here twice. The first time I came I spent probably over a $100 on a variety of crystals, herbs, incense, candle holder, and incense holder. I came with four other friends who all bought things too. The cashier was friendly (forgot their name but asian with dark hair) but I definitely was in shock as they were wrapping up my items and dropped the candle holder on the ground. It was a hard drop that a few friends were startled and I was surprised the crystal had not broken into pieces. When I got home I noticed 3 cracks in the stone and also tried to clean up the edges of it and another matching incense holder piece I had purchased. I came back a second time only with the two items, matching candle holder (that was dropped) and matching incense holder. As soon as I walk in there were two employees, one at the register (white, blonde hair) and one near the door (white, black hair w/ straight style bangs a lil purple in em). I'm a very easy going person so I naturally smile at the person as I walk in the door because their eyes had already locked mine as I was walking in. I didn't get a smile back so I said "hey how's it going" and proceeded into the store since I planned to exchange and just pick out a different candle crystal and incense crystal. I actually turned back a few steps to the person at the door to say "hey I just bought these about a week ago and want to exchange these today," they responded "well we actually don't do returns here" and frankly at this point was when I knew I did not like this employee because of the tone and attitude this was communicated in. I responded and I actually laughed a little because I naturally do that when people get attitudes with me and said "I'm actually just looking to exchange for other items in the store, I may even buy some extra stuff honestly but I never said anything about a return or used the word return." I then proceeded to the person at the register since they had just finished ringing up a customer. I sorta re-set my energy with a breathe and smile at the lady at the register because that first interaction definitely felt unnecessarily rude and could've been communicated so much more professionally or just regular. I explain the same situation to the person at the register that I just came into exchange and I didn't mind also spending some more money (As a Black woman I am highly aware of how I am stereotyped in retail spaces in SF, followed around stores etc. so I didn't want any extra of that I had already gotten from the first person at the door). The person at the register said that they don't do exchanges or returns but would get the manager, Chelsea. When Chelsea came out I explained again that I came in to exchange and she refused to offer and exchange or a return. She said that I bought the items like that so there was nothing she could do. Whew, the unprofessionalism was off the chain this day - I then proceeded to recap my horrible experience in the store overall, primarily my interaction with the one employee at the door. As I was just in the middle of correcting my language after saying "this lady, well actually my bad I don't know your pronouns but this one" the employee is clearly pissed off that I was even telling the manager about the interaction and talks over me "you don't need to gender me." I don't know if this employee has mental health opportunities where treatment has been absent or if it was racism or if it was having a bad day, who knows but definitely the worse experience I've ever had. The manager then said I don't want you to have a bad experience and kept offering a 20% discount off of any new purchase and I kept re-iterating that I indeed had and am having a bad experience. Then she even says to my face that she doesn't even have to offer me that 20% discount like she was doing me a favor, lol. I had no intention buying anything there again. She insisted on the discount and to get my name to write down (which felt unnecessary and I did not like the insisting of that to try to end the conversation as I was mentioning that as a business owner myself, I suggest that these sort of interactions are held more professionally and that it is reiterated to staff). It was a disappointing to have it revealed that a place that is supposed to have certain holistic offerings is wack while capitalizing off of indigenous practices of my African and native ancestors. If you're looking to spend way more than you need and absorb some twisted vibez (make sure to cleanse anything you purchase from there!) from unprofessional and passive aggressive employees go right ahead. I used to be a loyal customer here and have bought kratom from them many times over the course of a little over a year, but never again. Not only is there kratom ridiculously overpriced, but it's also of poor quality. There customer service is abysmal and they purposely try to keep you from using your stamp card and putting in any sort of customer loyalty discount. Today was the final nail in the coffin for me going here. I bought kratom from them and realized I needed a measuring scooper so I went back in to get one. The scooper is 50 cents and they insisted I needed to pay for it and that I needed to buy at least a dollar worth of stuff to charge it on my card. There was a long line and I was waiting just to get a 50 cents scooper and told I needed to buy two and they refused to just give it to me. I assumed since I'm a loyal customer that they would spare a 50 cent scooper but apparently they don't want your customer loyalty. I don't always make a purchase when I come here, but I love the staff and the space. You can pick up one of their high quality hula hoops and play to your heart's content, and for the advanced hula hoopers, there's some really awesome fire toys and accessories (you can play with those too, but obviously without the fire!) I don't really buy into all the herbal remedies that they sell there, but occasionally pick up some herbal energy or wellness supplements. Just a really cool, one of a kind place. They are an herbal supplement and wellness shop, NOT a tobacco shop or a head shop. You can expect to find teas, extracts, powders, and all manner of concoctions and natural remedies for your health and well being. They also sell some legal herbs that give you a natural high, including energy pills and other supplements. This is not a cannabis club. It's an herbal supplement shop with a playful, tongue-in-cheek, Haight flavored twist. 2.) They have some fun merchandise that includes hula hoops, fire toys, smoking accessories, and gifts. 3.) I never write yelp reviews (this is literally my first) but my incredibly positive experience at this store is definitely worth sharing. I've just recently gotten into apothecary/natural remedies and have started exploring various shops in SF......I have to say my experience at the Twisted Thistle was by far THE best I've had to date. Way prefer it to scarlet sage (who's staff seemed annoyed at my lack of knowledge and pretty much blew me off). The atmosphere here is so calm and also spacious enough to comfortably browse their selection of goodies. But what really stood out was their tremendous customer service! Unlike the other places I've gone to the woman working in the store was very knowledgeable about ALL of their products and took plenty of time with my boyfriend and I to discuss our various issues/possible remedies. I love HHH! I was going there to get their pre-made kratom to help with my anxiety, and fell in love with the herb. Recently i've begun investing in making my own kratom, and was able to get all of the necessary materials right there, at a reasonable price. They also have an awesome discount when you buy the loose kratom, as opposed to their pre-packaged ones. They have tons of other products as well, some for recreational fun (there is one I really enjoy, but i can never remember the name, it promotes euphoria and energy..) and they have teas, hoops, and herbal drops that help with certain needs. I got the one that promotes a stronger immune system, it's been pretty awesome. The staff there is always welcoming and friendly, and they really have a passion for their products.
