Since 2016, Alan Toothaker was the veterinarian for our sweet, beautiful golden retriever Sophie…read moreduring the months each year that we have spent in Maine. In November 2024, he examined Sophie and drew labs. He told us, "she's fine," "just adjusting to her medications." Without much change in her symptoms until the last hours, she died 2 weeks later as we were finally taking her to an emergency room. On 2/26/26 the Maine Board of Veterinary Medicine disciplined Dr. Toothaker for poor record-keeping and violating practice standards in his care of Sophie, and separately regarding another complaint that alleged he mistreated animals and staff. This includes for my case the specific consent agreement that Dr. Toothaker chose to sign to avoid going to court (administrative hearing). You will also see there that he was still on probation for previous infractions when he treated Sophie. Beyond these state actions, Dr. Toothaker also paid $145,360 to resolve complaints by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) about his mishandling of controlled substances in 2023 [https://bit.ly/DEA_ToothakerFine]. As a (human) doctor, after Sophie died, I requested from Dr. Toothaker's clinic, her complete medical record, and I was appalled. We had brought Sophie in because she had not been eating well, but the medical note said she was "eating and drinking well," the kind of text one has in a default note template that's supposed to be changed in the real note, but he didn't. The lab results had numerous red flags that Dr. Toothaker ignored. When I presented to another veterinarian (without giving away the subsequent events) the data that Dr. Toothaker had before him at Sophie's last visit, and asked whether going with "she's fine" seemed right, that vet said "I would not choose to ride for a few weeks on 'she's fine.' I think you would be better served to go see an internal medicine specialist." We would certainly have taken her to a specialist -- driven that night to Portland if needed -- in line with the extensive medical care we have gotten for her over her life. Unfortunately, Dr. Toothaker did not suggest taking her to a specialist, so we didn't do it, and now Sophie is dead, 3 days after her 9th birthday. She had a complicated medical history which Dr. Toothaker knew about but ignored. Equally worrisome in a different way, namely, his trustworthiness, after he received my complaint from the Board, he reported that he -- oops! -- had failed to include in the "complete medical record" that he had sent me, more complete medical ("SOAP") notes maintained "in a separate module" of his electronic medical record. This conveniently discovered note contains at least one statement that I know to be false, and many others that are highly implausible. My impression, though unproven, is that he fabricated these notes in response to my complaint. Dr. Toothaker still claims that he did not do anything wrong medically, but the veterinary board thinks he did, and so do I. I noted in my complaint that Dr. Toothaker is friendly and affable, but that does not make up for his being cavalier and irresponsible about the actual medical care of animals. Before letting Dr. Toothaker care for your pet, I highly recommend you read his disciplinary actions and look at the medical notes that he has previously written for your pet. Sophie died quietly on the floor of our vehicle. I didn't get to say goodbye to her.

The owner Tony actually admitted to me at pickup "your dog must have an iron stomach" (I confusingly said no) and he admitted that he allowed my dog to EAT AND CLEAN UP ALL THE KIBBLE FROM THE DOG CRATES AT THE END OF THE DAY!!! mind you I never had Tony feed my dog at any daycare visit. She never ate during playcare. And my dog became aggressively sick in the middle of that night, due to Tony's RIDICULOUS manner, and lack of any responsibility for an animal. If you care about your dog, do NOT trust this place. I should've write this review a while ago. After I confronted him and left he continued to be rude to me in email, stating my dog was a mess and out of control. (Well I bring her to daycare to play, he never stated any such issues. And then started attacking me and saying how terrible of a person I was and how we didn't "click" as people. Wow, I just wanted a nice place for my dog to play. This guy is a FUCKING IDIOT.

There is a paved trail behind the property for walkers and joggers alike. The only issue you'll encounter is trying to make that left turn to head South into Acadia, because with the two way traffic it's almost impossible without heading into the bank parking lot across the street, and THEN turning right to head South. Quiet factor: 9.5/10 - Ok, so you might hear an occasional door closing too hard here or there but the rooms themselves are well insulated. Plus, pay no mind to the railroad tracks outside the window behind the property. There is a local tourist railroad that is nearby but does not traverse through here. I believe they were once part of the Maine Central Railroad that was part of a bustling lumber industry in the late 1800's and were also famously used to occasionally transport President FDR to a private residence in Bangor in the 1930s, but (this) is a spur of that line that isn't otherwise used. That said, there are plenty of No Trespassing signs on it. Staff: 10/10. Kudos to the breakfast team who kept the Inn's guests well fed. Offerings were delicious, and varied each day, and they are to be commended. The dining room seats about twenty guests comfortably, so time your AM meal accordingly. The biscuits and gravy were particularly good. Free Otis Spunkmeyer cookies at check in, too. Plus there is complimentary lemon water, ice cream, and soup from 5p-8p daily. Value: 9.5/10. The free breakfast is a plus to any traveler's budget and was a big factor in me booking here. Closer properties to MDI and in Bar Harbor proper are at least 50% more per night and will offer you larger crowds, and no complimentary anything. Believe me...I already looked. If you have kids, the breakfast is a huge savings. Plus the property is pet friendly. Shower pressure is average. While there is a grab bar, there are no anti slip coatings or mats in any of the tubs, so be careful getting in and out. Plus the vanity sink sits VERY low for some reason, so expect to be hunched over when doing your morning hygiene routine. In room safes and ironing boards are a nice convenience that worked just fine, too. The place has just enough parking, is close to a SuperCenter Walmart in case you forgot to pack anything, and there are nearby grocery stores (Shaws; Hannaford's) too. . Housekeeping is done every 3rd day unless requested otherwise. Bottom line: It's noticeably a little more $ per night than most other Comfort Inn's you may have stayed at, but you get what you pay for, esp. in such a picturesque & renown part of Maine. Despite it being a weekday the bill was $343.35 as the tourist season had started. We had a rented a vehicle and the Bar Harbor Hampton was priced even higher than this one. We choose Hamptons because of the Hilton ownership oversight, although individually they are privately managed so quality will vary. We came from Minnesota an had just spent three nights at the Portland Downtown-Waterfront Hampton and were in Bar Harbor for a cruise and to check out Arcadia National Park. As it turns out we should have spent the three nights here and just one at the sketchy Portland Hampton. My girlfriend's daughter insists on separate beds for all of us. One great thing about Hamptons is that a rollaway bed added to a double queen room is not an issue, although the quality of the bed itself varies greatly by location. Here our requested rollaway was waiting for us with linens and pillows, and it was a decent one unlike the broken one we got in Portland that also didn't have a pillow or top sheet. My girlfriend actually commented on how nice the room was, a rare nod of approval as we are both a bit cynical. The thermostat had its own remote, the Hilton app actually worked on the TV if I remember right, there was an ice bucket and even a couple mini recycling bins. The view was just the local shopping mall, but that's not what we got the room for. One slight disappointment was being refused the token Hilton Silver Level membership benefit of free bottles of water on arrival. Maybe this isn't a 'select' Hampton. The workout room here was large and modern, unlike many Hampton workout rooms. The pool was also well kept. The normally no frills Hampton breakfast was way above par at this property. There was an abundance of choices and healthy options in bakery, hot and cold items, fresh fruit, toppings, and beverages. This included dairy free and gluten free options like Silk almond milk and Udi's gluten free muffins. See the image postings. This was an especially welcome sight after the sparse Portland Hampton breakfast bar of the previous three days. A surprising discovery I got on checking out the lobby after unpacking was the 'Iced Coffee Bar'. The receptionist told us they were the only Hampton to have one. It had a nice sign, coffee container, a dozen Monin syrups, creamer, ice bucket, cups, stir sticks, and napkins. See the image posting. My girlfriend and daughter planned to try it before we left early the next morning as I had understood from the receptionist it was available 24 hours. Unfortunately, it was taken down during breakfast. I'm not sure the girls even saw it. Other then missing out on the Iced Coffee Bar and not getting the token Hampton Silver Membership bottled water perk, this may have been our best Hampton stay of the dozen or so different Hampton properties we have tried. It should be the textbook model in management for other Hamptons to follow.

It had 2 bedrooms and a sleeper sofa. It also had a Jacuzzi. The resort has a nice pool, game area( though it costs to play any games) basketball and tennis courts. There is even a childrens playground. The hostess was very nice when we checked in and allowed us to check in early. It's in a central location for shopping and restaurants in Ellsworth. We would definitely stay here again.

The toilet bowl in one of the bathrooms was stained, but it was a minor matter since everything was clean. This community IS called a resort, and I agree that it is a bit misleading, BUT they do have a pool and game/activity room in the main office. We were still blown away by the comfort and cleanliness of our apartment, and will definitely stay here again when visiting Acadia!

This place came up and we called hesitatingly to see if they have vacancy on a saturday night and they did. The motel is ran by a sweet couple from their porch. They man (whose name i forgot) waited for us to check in around 11:30. Yes, the furniture was outdated and there was a weird stuffy smell in the room, but the service was pleasant, free basic bagel & coffee breakfast and cheap and easy last minute booking 15 miles from Acadia. Only down side the wireless is limited and only works from the porch of the office.

I noticed some other reviewers pointed out how terrible the hotel condition was -- the room itself didn't have a problem, it was clean and very cozy. Their main office looked like an antique shop, chaotic but in an organized fashion! If some reviewers wanted to have a crazy clean hotel room with modern decors in this area, they would have to pay at least double the rate this hotel offered. Nothing is perfect, and so this hotel has just the right balance between comfort and affordability. The owners are also trying their best to make improvements on the room every season. I truly felt like I was camping with friends. The property is gorgeous, with lots of area to walk and explore. They give s'mores out every night, which is a great way to meet other campers at the fire pits. They have different game nights or activities every night, so you can really connect with others and the experience here. I love the tent, and the representative who showed us around the property and our tent was super informative and knowledgeable. I can't wait to stay here again next year.
