We'd…read morebeen using a few signs at home ("more", "all done", "milk") but before we took the Signing Up class, we hadn't been able to see that our son was making the signs back to us. In the class we learned that his motions were approximations of the signs we were teaching him and learned how to respond to encourage him to continue to develop his signs. Since we took the class, we've been incorporating what we learned and have seen tremendous skill development already. Our son's sometimes whines are getting replaced with signed requests-- it's amazing to see the pleasure on his face when he realizes that his sign has communicated so much more than his emerging sounds have. We'd tried DVDs at home but had given up as they seemed hokey and didn't answer our questions. One class with Signing Up was a much better learning experience for all three of us. Our teacher was Melissa and we found her energetic, clear, helpful and very skilled at maneuvering between adult-centered instruction and songs and games to keep the kids in class engaged.

Within a couple of weeks she was using signs for Milk, drink, eat and diaper. It was great to see the joy on her face when she signed for drink and was instantly given her cup! The satisfaction of being able to communicate her needs was great. IT was also really helpful to see Melissa's videos of other babies signing. We were able to identify our daughters signs which were slightly different than what we signed to her - so it was good to know what to look for or we might have missed it!

I met Marcia Royce some years back when my girlfriend's children attended The Key Institute and I…read moreassisted her with transporting them. Last week I enrolled my son in the Key Institute and was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED! Upon entering we were immediately taken aback by the intense smell of DOG. My son's allergies immediately started acting up and after I left, she told him to stop sniffing. Prior to agreeing to enrollment, Ms. Royce told me that all of her assistants had Masters Degrees. She said she would teach my son study skills as well as work with him on his math which is why he was there! My eighth grade son was "tutored" by a tenth grade student who did NOTHING with him. She had my son pull up his math work from school (which were already completed and had the answers) on his phone and he redid the problems. When I picked him up I asked her what grade she was in and she told me. I asked her how my son did with math and she responded, "good; he knew everything I gave him". Ms. Royce gave my son some papers to read about study skills while she interrupted him and told him random stories and yelled at the other student who was there. There were NO materials there and Ms. Royce actually asked me to purchase same from Barnes and Nobles to give to her so that she can use them with my son. Ms. Royce consistently called me by my son's name and asked my son, "and what is your name?" She told me one price prior to us going and a second price once we were there and yet a third price when I opened my wallet to pay her. She did not come downstairs until one of her Assistants went to get her and prior to that we heard her loudly talking baby talk ( I assumed to her dog as she told me she had one upstairs). As she made her way downstairs where we were she continued in that way of talking as she closed the door and told the dog to "stay there now". Ms. Royce made inappropriate comments and remarks to my son ( who is African American). She told him that he shouldn't eat sugar because it's bad for his brain, but that he should eat watermelon. She chuckled immediately after she made this comment. She told him that he should read books and she mentioned " like books about Martin Luther King". When my son shared that he wants to have a baseball career but he wants to complete college first, she remarked, "Just as long as you don't kneel during the National Anthem". When I paid her, she said she would give me my change when I returned to pick up my son. She did not, nor did she even mention owing me change. I know that she has had a very good reputation in the past but I just think it's time for her to hand over the reins. She definitely appears to be senile. When I called her to advise her that my son would not be returning and why, she confirmed all that she said to my son but said, "so what? What's wrong with that?". She told me that her Assistants with Masters Degrees no longer worked there and one passed away. According to her, the tenth grader was "temporary" and she knows a Teacher in the Yorktown School District who she could ask to come to the institute to teach my son. Ms. Royce did not remember talking the baby talk nor did she remember that her Assistant had to go upstairs to get her to come downstairs. She was adamant that she did so on her own and just as adamant that she wasn't talking baby talk. Ms. Royce really needs to consider either closing up shop or turning The Key Institute into capable hands because hers no longer are!
