The exhibits are fascinating, covering everything from the geology of Northern Arizona to the region's wildlife and the rich history and cultures of the Native peoples. The museum sits on beautiful natural grounds that are worth walking through as well. We brought our 18-month-old, 3-year-old, and 5-year-old, and all of them had a great time while actually learning a lot. There are so many interactive elements, including an animal scavenger hunt, pull-out drawers throughout the exhibits, videos, and hands-on displays you can touch. There's also a discovery area with books and toys that our kids absolutely loved. We spent about two hours here, and it was time well spent. If you're visiting Flagstaff, or even if you've been coming here for years like I have, don't make the mistake of overlooking this gem. I'd absolutely recommend it for families and anyone interested in the natural and cultural history of Northern Arizona.

The main attraction really is the mansion so just buy a $18 pass which gives you access to the mansion tour as well as the outside grounds (which is what the $5 pass gives you access to). As for as museum goes, the subject material isn't that interesting: it's about a random wealthy family. Imagine a 100 years into the future we have a museum about a random millionaire. Our tour guide, Marco, was fantastic and great at answering questions for our little group of 4. The mansion really is just a showcase of how a wealthy person's home from the early 1900's. You get a glimpse into their business and personal lives as well as the type of furniture employed in the household. The tour was interactive and nice. The self guided tour is just literally walking around the mansion so there isn't too much to see but it makes for a nice, short walk. Overall, I think that there are more interesting museums out there. But if you're looking for a super quiet museum to browse, this would be the place.

There is the museum inside an old, and kind of small, hospital, and there is grounds to walk around. When you walk through the door you enter a small gift shop area and pay your entrance fee. The guy that was helping us did a great job creeping my wife out about the place feeling haunted. The museum inside is laid out with local history and fun old hospital tools including a very shiny iron lung. They do pretty good job being inclusive of history of local minorities so it isn't just white man's history. Upstairs the museum is laid out in rooms by decade and there is a room that was a nurses room that has the original paint and most of the decor. The grounds are filled with a local logging steam locomotive and cars. You can walk through the caboose but it's all steel so when there are lightning storms it's best to vacate. There are also some old cabins that were moved to the property and they are fun to explore. If you like old tractors like I do there are a couple of examples to view and drool over. There is also a large barn filled with wagons and other tools. The museum does not take a lot of time to get through if you are dragging someone with you that doesn't like museums. I grew up in an old Victorian house felt a little like home in some ways. There was one very small and clean bathroom in the museum and you can hear everything when you are on the outside so if you are shy go before or after your visit.

I don't know what I expected but I sure didn't see anything that even resembled a crater. Until I did. We parked in the ample lot and proceeded to the visitor center. Meteor Crater is independent, not part of the NPS though they do belong to the ASTC Passport program (If you visit scienc-y types of museums, look into this program) We watched a video about the crater and then planned on going out to see it, but, alas, there was lightning within 5 miles and the crater was closed, except it was only kinda closed. Go out at your own risk. We were told "no worries", they would have a presentation instead. Of course we headed outside. Not a soul stayed back. Because we're nerds, we went back in to hear the presentation but no one but us showed up. The presenter said that the talk was cancelled and they told him to clean instead. Obviously, talking to us, talking to anyone, was a better proposition than cleaning. At that moment, Kyle became our private tour guide. It was obvious in the first few minutes of listening to Kyle that this was not his job. It was his passion. He was an absolute fount of knowledge about the crater, its legends, mysteries and contributions to mankind (Apollo 11 anyone?). His excitement was contagious. What could have turned out to be just a quick walk to see some hole in the ground became a story we'll repeat to others. If we hadn't met Kyle, this would have been an hour to an hour and a half visit. Instead, it was a fascinating afternoon that piqued our curiosity and left us a teeny bit more knowledge than what we walked in with. While the crater itself is the highlight, the museum is, after all, a museum, the highlight being the meteor itself. Even if you only intend to see the crater and skip over the displays, do find the meteor. You'll be sorry if you don't. On our way out, who did we run into? Kyle, of course. This time he walked us around a courtyard teaching us about petrified wood and local minerals. Again, mesmerizing. After a few photos, we bid farewell to Kyle and headed back to Flagstaff. The next day, the local news station did a story about the crater and who they interviewed? It was our Kyle! Who else?!

You drive down a long dirt road but it was fine for a sedan/rental car. This incredible cliff dwelling was built by the Sinagua people more than 800 years ago and somehow manages to look both ancient and architecturally impressive at the same time. Tucked high into the limestone cliff, it offered protection from weather, flooding, and probably the occasional uninvited neighbor dropping by at dinner time. It's amazing to think families lived here, raised children here, and climbed up and down ladders every day. Suddenly carrying groceries up a flight of stairs doesn't seem quite so bad.

The guy who runs it (I'm guessing the owner) isn't very talkative or friendly, but he wasn't rude either. It's free to enter and there is a donation jar at the entrance, don't forget to contribute!
