If you're trying to find Indian and Pakistani groceries in the seacoast area, this might be the store you've been looking for. I can find my way around the dal and some of the spices, but this store is amazing. I picked up some Tikha Gathiya to snack on later, some Panch Puran to experiment with, and a can of Foul Moudammas just because the name was interesting. I'm not bragging, I'm reading this stuff off the labels and I bought things that looked like I'd like them. There was a ton of stuff in there that I couldn't even begin to guess at and next time I go, I'm bringing my camera, taking pictures of the labels, and then looking it all up on Google when I get home. They also say that they have Halal meats including Goat and Lamb, but I didn't see any in the refrigerated cases. Maybe it was in the back but I didn't ask because we already had a few days of food at home in the fridge. If the stuff in this store is as good as I hope it is, I'll be giving this store 5 stars. If you're experimental or you know something about South Asian and Middle Eastern foods, visit Taj Mahal Groceries. I want these guys to stay in business for a long, long time. Quick update (6/29/11): I finished the Gathiya, make some amazing Brussel Sprouts with a little crushed Panch Puran, and the can of Foul Moudammas is likely to be the foundation of tonight's dinner. Everything I bought there was really good and I'll be back soon, buying things I don't really understand and looking them up when I get home.

Meatball calzone - made fresh in the morning on their homemade bread, this isn't the thick crusty calzone you're thinking of. It's more like a long stick bread, packed with meatballs, sauce and cheese on the inside. They cut one into three for us, and served with a separate cup of marinara dipping sauce each! Lobster Tail pastry and cannoli: fantastic pastries. I've had many of each of these, and DeStefano's had some of the best. The lobster tail was light and incredibly flaky, the cannoli had some crunch without being hard or overly sweet. The chocolate chip cookie also had chunks of butterscotch (?) and was perfectly cooked--I know saying perfectly cooked sounds crazy, but I don't think I've ever had another cookie that nailed the crispy/soft line so well. A family runs Barker's Farm and their kids and grandkids work behind the counter. They offer a tightly curated selection of vegetables and had some of the best-tasting basil though in small bunches (it wasn't enough to make pesto but delicious in a Caprese salad). They have everything you need for staples from the garden along with things that are just nice to have. Their food selection is terrific. I especially like their "salsa in a basket", which is a strawberry quart basket filled with onion, tomato, jalapeno, cilantro and tomatillo. Fingerling potatoes are available here! There is a cooler in the back with locally sourced bacon, milk, and eggs along with Swampscott soda. Depending on the time of year, you can get cider donuts, pies, brownies, and bread. In the "nice to have" department, Barker's has a couple of offerings. There are bouquets of cut flowers which you can purchase for half the price of what you could get at a florist or supermarket. Or, better yet, you can go out to their flower garden and pick your own bouquet! Sometimes they have dried chili strings or dried flower arrangements which you can hang as home decor. As you ring up your purchase, don't forget to grab a bar of handmade soap. (I'm partial to the Voodoo Spice.) If you just feel the need to get in there and grow your own, Barker's also has a green house. You can pick up seedlings for most garden vegetables there. They offer a good selection of annuals and perennials, as well. Barker's is not open year round. Let's face it, it's New England and winter is a time to live off the preserves that you made during the summer and fall. When late spring rolls around, make sure you put Barker's as your first stop for food shopping and pick up good local food to keep you going.

I almost always get the Bullseye: turkey, cheese, tomato, red onions, mayo and barbecue sauce on a nice fresh sub roll. I think the prices average around seven bucks. Beware early closing time-- if you're hungry for a sammich in the mid- to late afternoon, you'll be out of luck.
