Stumbled upon this great donation based art store that allows people to "pay what you can" on random creative and art supplies that they have. I was getting ready to move across the country and was able to donate old office supplies, post-its, paper and other items I had around my apartment - I was very happy to donate those items here rather than somewhere like Goodwill or them going into the trash. I didn't expect for them to ask me to stand there and go through every time I was donating. It was a bit judgey and uncomfortable as they handed back a can of spray paint that they thought could be less than half full. I was disappointed that the rest of it wouldn't be used be someone (even for free!) and that I had to throw it out instead. read more

Turnip Green Creative Reuse is one of those special places that has been around forever and keeps getting more and more new people interested. Turnip Green is now either in its third or fourth space because it just keeps growing larger. The latest space on 3rd Ave is the best yet! In this space, the Turnip Green staff has been able to great things with organizing the materials for shopping ease. If you are not familiar with Turnip Green, it is a place to donate materials and give them a second life. Anyone can shop in the store with their pay as you can model. It seems like it would mainly be for creative people but it is really for anyone! I don't want to give away my secrets, but I haven't bought a card from a grocery store in the longest. Turnip Green has a wonderful stationary section sorted by occasion - it suddenly doesn't feel like I have way too much stationary when I'm buying for a good cause! I'm actually helping by hoarding cards. :D It is also a great place when you want to donate things - be sure to check the website first on what is accepted! But that leftover yarn, the fabric you'll never use, the leftover tile from your home renovation, it can all have a new life. This place is cool. As a newbie, it was a little hard to understand how it works. They say they are a "take what you need, and pay what you can." The donation drop off people are rude and have very bad attitudes. They pick through your donation and only accept certain items, turning away items. Turnip Green is a hidden gem for the crafters in town. It's a cool place with a great mission- to reduce waste by allowing people to recycle their odds and ends from various crafting modalities. I love this store, truly. It's well organized and it is SUCH a treasure to the community...both artist and non-artist. The greater good of the store and its concept allow the pros to outweigh the cons. The cons lie within the attitudes of the people who work here. I've had one interaction with one person that didn't leave me feeling like I had done something wrong and/or was wasting time and space by being there and asking a question. That person had a long white ponytail and was helpful and fun and I hope they work there forever, for selfish reasons. The other...dozen or so interactions I've had with the staff over the years have been irritating and fairly unpleasant, at best. I understand that they have to sift through people's dry paint cans and questionable "art supply donations" of which I can't imagine. But there is no reason to treat every question or potential donation as though I walked into a hobby lobby in full witch regalia and asked to be led to the aisle that holds the Christian-burning spell recipes. If the supercilious tones and condescending eye rolls eased up, this place would be on my list of weekly stops. As it stands now, thick skin, blinders, and a quick prayer to the universe that I won't need assistance from (almost) anyone inside are required before entering. read more

I absolutely love TGCR and go there whenever I can. The selection is so varied and there's always lots of good things to be found. I've also found lots of things for my garden and love their plant swaps. I highly recommend you visit. FYI..Take a personal fan and try to get there early if you go in the summer because it's HOT! I've been going to turnip green off and on for awhile now, love the store and all of the variety, but for so.e reason this older lady that works there, always seems to have a problem with me. I'm a bead freak, and I make jewelry, usually have a great experience there, but today that older lady put limits on what I could buy, so I probably won't go back. She really made me feel bad, but it's ok, I can find somewhere else to spend my time and money... Hopefully that older lady will see this and realize that she's disrespectful, she picks on certain people while others get by filling bags and not paying for anything, unlike me who pays ever time I'm there. Excellent place to shop and donate. I'm clearing out my craft room and purging items I no longer need. Turnip Green is an awesome resource to drop off and buy additional items. The goal to keep useable items for creating is admirable. This shop achieves that with great success. The shelves are packed with items from discontinued fabric sample books to flower pots to file folders. You never know what you will find. It's very organized for shopping. The staff is friendly and helpful. Super source for kids organizations with little budgets to pick up great supplies! They collect laser printer toner cartridges and p There is art hanging on the exposed brick walls (the Green Gallery) and all manner of materials, such as fabric, tiles, carpet samples, paper, plastics and other items that would have ended up in the dump in well-organized bins and shelves waiting to be bought for a song and used for projects for artists, schools, communities and homes. (As of the writing of this review, they currently have 10 cent tiles for sale, and chipped ones are being given away.) They also carry handmade items made from repurposed goods by local artists and artisans - my favorites are the purses, messenger bags and organizers made from recycled car seat belts by Salvage: Upholstery and Design. They also usually have seasonal items - Christmas ornaments, Valentine's Day art, etc. The Green Gallery is used to curate shows for local reuse artists. Artists who have had shows here include Jorge Mendoza and Michael Hap Hapner, who also have taught workshops at Turnip Green demonstrating some of the ways they create art from recycled materials. There are also many special events, including workshops, seminars and evening openings for the shows at the Green Gallery. Turnip Green is open for the Downtown First Saturday Arts Crawl, and is also active at many city green-oriented events. They have the best system I have seen within the non-profit business of getting art materials into the hands of artists and craftspeople in our community. I would consider no other group to be the recipient of the major donation necessary after a recent renovation of my home. I will be taking oil painting materials plus many other raw materials needed for sewing as well as crafts of many kinds. Please take the time to check out Turnip Greens and if you have craft/artist materials or fabric to throw out please recycle it at TG so other artist/crafters can take advantage of the wonderful items available here. There's everything from canvas paper, fabric, beads and paint to dolls, wonderful display of local artist and an area for kids to create while Mom/Dad is looking through all the cool stuff here. You go in and they have different rooms like "paper room", "fabric room", "mixed media"etc. and it's like one magical garage sale or flea market for used art supplies.
