I needed a battery disconnect for my old lawnmower. They sold me on a 40.00 trickle charger. More than I wanted to spend, but you should trust the professionals, right? The employee opened the box to show me how it worked. An hour later I go to return it, and they would not, because the box, they opened, was opened and now I'm stuck with the wrong item. Insulting management and extremely poor after sales service: Please note that I rarely if ever write reviews, but feel compelled to manage the expectations of the next potential customer. November 2020 I bought an $1900 Ariens EFI snowblower from the Portsmouth store. I intentionally bought it from an independent store over a Home Depot (the price was similar and specs slightly different) as I like to "buy local" and felt good about it - what a slap in the face! I bought the electronic fuel injection model and it comes with a proprietary charger to keep a small battery charged. Turns out the charger was defective - not the end of the world and not Turf Depot's fault. I brought it into Turf Depot and asked them if they could swap it out. They didn't believe me that the charger was the issue (even though the light was dead) and couldn't be bothered to plug it in at the store to see for themself! said they would have to verify it by having me haul the snowblower in just to plug it in. I don't have a vehicle to do that so it would cost me something like $80 to have them pick it up - seriously people? They also said that if I bought the charger I could not return it or the bad one for a refund - nice... I then referred to the fact that it should be covered under warranty - they look it up and I was less than 30 days over 1 year. They tell me that Ariens wouldn't cover it anyway as it's an electronic item (why would Turf Depot want to sell Ariens if they are such a poor company to deal with?) Wow, these guys were doing everything in their power to avoid being in the slightest bit helpful. All this for a $22 item! - it's the principle... Later I checked the warranty and A. The term is 3 years and B. There are no exclusions for electronic items. Seemed to me that they were just fabricating reasons not to help and I assume that this must be a corporate policy. I have had my own businesses for 20 plus years selling electronic items - stuff happens and it's how you treat people that really matters - less so the product - Turf Depot failed me. I had blind faith that buying local would be a great experience. Next time I will read the reviews and ensure that my purchases go to businesses that support their customers rather than shrugging shoulders and saying essentially that you are SOL. I will be sure to balance this poor review with a 5 star review for another local business that provided awesome service - the word of mouth works both ways. read more

We just cannot praise Steve and Noemi enough ! They both "go that extra mile" to take care of their customers. Everything we needed to get our tractor ready for fall cleanup was provided immediately. Steve even made a special trip to another location just to get us going. That wasn't necessary, yet very much appreciated. Purchased a new 3 stage cub cadet snow blower 11 months ago from Londonderry. Augur Belt broke after using only a handful of times. I contacted Turf Depot and was informed it would cost over $100 even though it is under warranty and still basically a new machine. Not sure if the issue is with Cub Cadet or Turf Depot - but since they sold it to me, and was not very helpful in resolving Ill put my comment on there page My prior snow blower lasted 15 years and cost half the price - and only needed to be tuned up every now and again.. to have the belt brake so soon on this... not good read more

First I called and talked with Joe for an extended period about different chainsaws. He was well-informed and gave me a lot of useful info. When I went in, Joe showed me 4 different saws that might do the job for me. I also had brought a chain from my old Makita hoping to be able to reuse it (and my 3 other spares) on the new saw. He was very patient and tried to fit the chain to some of the saws they had on the shelf, even going to the extent of swapping out different bars. All to no avail, but I'm glad we tried. I would up buying a Stihl and as I was leaving, Joe mentioned that Stihl allows you to trade up within 7 days of buying a new saw. So when I got home and I tried it out and was disappointed in the power, I went back with the, now used saw and talked to Joe. Once again we went over some features and options and found another Stihl that I think is going to do the job nicely. But I couldn't have been happier with the customer service. (Well, I guess I might have been if they could have fixed my Makita :) Great service, good price and I sure prefer buying from a small business rather than a big box store. read more

I would highly recommend this company if you are wanting to be treated fairly. here is the story: I purchased a Garevely Mower form the Salem Location. After 3 times of having it the shop, and concerned I received a lemon(which was found later it was--A defect in the electrical) the GM Rich(fought for me with Gravely ) got me a brand new replacement mower straight from the factory. I had a perfect experience with Turf Depot in Portsmouth, NH. I had them do preventive maintenance on my 22" Toro walk-behind mower that would start, but wouldn't continue to run. They were responsive to my needs, quick to turn the job around, and the workmanship was exceptional. My mower is back to the performance it had when we bought it 7 years ago. The price was reasonable, too. I should add that I'm not certain but I believe the touched up the red paint on the mower deck. I didn't expect this, but it looks great! read more

The worst experience in my life. Purchased a zero turn Toro lawn mower and they put in mulching blades at my request at purchase time. Two months later I went to change the blades to the original blades and found that the bolt to the left blade had been stripped. I had it towed for service and was charged for damaged parts because not covered by Toro. I called Toro and they said no such call had been registered on their system. The service manager, Rich, is a criminal liar. I was insulted to the Nth degree by a lying moron. Probably a pathologic character to lie so brazenly and change his story while he is talking to you. And he claims that he manages client service in all four Turf Depot stores. Definitely a company to avoid if you can. read more

On Nov 1 I brought my small back pack leaf blower into this store as they "service" the brand, Was told by the desk worker that they would have to send it out to Manchester NH for an eval and estimate (though they advertise at this site that they do servicing.) Was told it would take 10 days at least for it to be looked at. I stated that if it was an expensive fix to let me know I would pass as it wasn't an expensive blower. Being in the middle of leaf season I borrowed a blower from a neighbor. No call back from them by 11/15. Called them and spoke with Christine who stated they received a call from the Manchester store 11/4 that the "machine is not worth fixing". She stated quickly that she would give me a # to call re: why it was not worth it then abruptly started talking to someone else next to her re: how busy she was etc. When back to me I asked why I was never called right after they got the call. She had no answer and was obviously irritated with me and I with her. Attitude was uncaring and abrupt. This store never has cars in the lot and empty when I've ever gone in there. I now know why. Will never step foot in there again. Terrible lack of customer service. I will purchase another blower but not from them. read more

Always have a great experience here. Staff is knowledgeable and they are passionate about what they do. Bought our first riding lawn mower there last year... salesman was great. Service constantly exceeds time frame... yesterday called to diagnose a problem with the mower. Dealt with Jamie who said it was probably the starter. When we went in, he told us the proper way to install. Got home and the mower is good as new. Kudos for running a great operation. read more

These guys should get a less then one star rating. My new from them snow blower I used 4 times and bought the service package for needs a new carburetor. Stored inside and it being less then a year old. I always shut the gas off and run it dry as I did with my 8 year old Toro. I know you don't get all the gas out but with all my gas power equipment I have done this with no problem. They told me it was from the ethanol gas we are using, I said we have been using ethanol for the last 8 years why was this the only thing that had a problem? No answer other then they recommend using ethanol fuel to store it. I bought two new snow blowers from them last fall. You can be assured I will not go back and will recommend to others to stay away as well. read more

I selected the one star because this is the lowest you can pick. I went on once to look. I saw a price and asked if the XT2 came set up as it was priced. the woman told me the price included all the attachments. Her tone was like I was a moron. I went back today with the intent of buying the cub cadet XT2 set up as I say and took a picture of. The arrogant salesman kept (over and over) saying the price for the unit was $1,799.00 per unit and the bagger was additional.... I asked if they ever ran a deal with the bagger included. He again said : Its $1.799.00 for the unit"............ I had to leave. I come in with a pocket full of cash and the thought of supporting a local business only to be treated like I am an idiot. Went across town and bought the same unit with the bagger and a snow blower for the same price I would have paid there. Some how I feel I was lucky based on the other reviews I read here. Their corporate managers should do a check on the Portsmouth Store and maybe do some training on how to treat people in the store with cash in their pockets. I will never step foot in that store or any of the other partnered stores again. They are great marketing for the store down the street in Hampton. read more

They don't even deserve 1 star. I brought my snowblower in to get serviced on their suggestion. The carburetor was surging a bit but it still threw snow and worked fine. After having them pick it up I received a call stating they broke a bolt off of the carb and the snowblower was irreparable. And that o owed 175.00 . They were charging me for something they broke ?if you provide a service for a fee great! But if you provide a service for a fee and break what you are working on is it the customers fault or the person who broke it? (Rhetorical) I told them I wasn't paying for something they broke and didn't provide. they then said they fixed it and it would work. Just so I would pay and have them deliver it to my house. I paid and I now have a snowblower that doesn't work. Terrible service terrible morals , terrible store. read more

They recently handled a warranty issue with a commercial Ariens unit I purchased earlier this season. The mechanic worked with Briggs and Stratten to get the engine replaced and had the unit back to me in just a few days, just in time for another nor' easter :-) read more

I called and asked for some technical assistance and Patrick was unwilling to help. He said I need a part number. I supplied what I thought was the part # and asked him to verify if would fir the 13" wheel size. He said yes. Weeks later I received the part and it was in correct. I called to ask if he could help me find the right caster and he was rude and said we don't do custom stuff and would not help me find the right part I needed. He is not helpful and has an attitude. I asked about returning what I purchased and he said send it back and I will see if they will give some kind of credit. Unreal. I will never do business with them again. I went to appliance parts pro and they have 2.1 million items for small equipment. They gladly looked up what I needed and I save 60.00 over the turf depot pricing as well. read more

I took my Honda lawnmower for warranty service. When I was there the service manager told me five times that fuel issues would not be covered, which I was familiar with. I showed them my receipt and they told me that my mower was no longer under warranty. I told them that I was pretty sure it was still under warranty but they said it was no longer covered. I called Honda and ask them if it was still under warranty. They said yes it was. I drove back to Turf Depot and explain to them that Honda said the mower was still under warranty. They admitted it was under warranty and took my mower in. They again told me five more times that fuel issues were not covered. I said I was familiar with that policy. (she was setting me up for any charges that Honda wouldn't cover) They did nothing, and called me back the same day and said it was done. They charge me around $125 to diagnose my concerns. They said that all my concerns were normal and not to worry. But it did need a oil change. Since one of my warrantee concerns was the oil was getting black way too quickly, I let them change the oil, even though I changed it about a month ago. I figured it would legitimize one of my warranty claims. It did not, they never even ran the engine after the oil change. When I picked up the mower I ran it for about five minutes and even though there was some black smoke coming from the exhaust the oil stayed pretty clean. I check the oil level and it was on the very lower limit. Apparently the mechanic was not aware that you weren't supposed to screw in the dipstick when checking the oil level of a Honda mower. Long story short I got Honda 770-497-6400 involved and they ended up paying for the diagnosis fee $125.00 for the diagnostic work. (which nothing was done) And I paid for the "oil change and oil filter" $32.49 (My Honda mower doesn't even have an oil filter) I would not recommend this facility to anyone. read more

When i picked up my Snowblower it was leaking gas. They fixed the leak real quickly, but when i just tried to use it today after out first snow fall found out that it keeps stalling out. They shoot no longer turns either. I brought it in for a simple tune up and some belts. read more

Turf Depot of Portsmouth. I suggest you not use them for servicing your yard machines. These guys bought Boston Lawnmower where I bought my Ariens snow blower and where I used to have my snow blower serviced for the past ten years. Many of the same personnel remain after Turf Depot took over, but the service department under this new company is not what it was when Boston Lawnmower owned the place, in my opinion. They returned my Ariens snow blower after NINE WEEKS and a $400 tuneup (including transport) with bolts missing from the belt housing cover, requiring a trip to Home Depot to buy replacement bolts. Then, when I turned it on for the first time in an early January storm, it went five feet in the first snow and the drive belt felt off! Five feet! Despite my complaining to the new manager Chris Jaques (who sneered, "What would you like me to do about it" when I went in to ask why they had not picked the machine up on the day it had been scheduled for return pickup) it took them a week and a half to pick it up for repair, then another week and a half to "repair" and return it. Some "repair." In all fairness, they did pick up my Ariens. But when I started it for the second storm in January, it failed again! This time the traction belt fell off after twenty feet! Wow! $400 down the drain dealing with incompetent, inexperienced, or just overworked mechanics, I thought! (Rather than deal with Turf Depot again, I called Ric at Coastal Enginuity in North Hampton, who actually picked the Ariens up the next day, found the problem, repaired, and returned. See my Yelp review of Coastal Enginuity.) Turf Depot should pay for the subsequent repair, I know, but I choose to not ever set foot in the place again. The moment you walk into Turf Depot, you will notice there is very little floor space because the place is so packed with machines for sale. Unlike Boston Lawnmower, it seems the Turf Depot outfit is primarily concerned with sales, sales, sales. Certainly not service, based on my experience with them. The only positive to come out of dealing for the first and only time with Turf Depot is that I found an experienced and highly competent overhaul mechanic with Coastal Enginuity. Again, I suggest you not send your yard machines for service at Turf Depot. read more
