    Shawnee Lookout - Historic building

There are several trails, playgrounds, some historic buildings, picnic areas, and extremely clean and well maintained restrooms. We opted for the Miami Fort trail, which offers fascinating signage about the earthworks and mounds that can be seen along parts of the trail, and about the Hopewell and Adena people who constructed them. If you take a close look at the map at the trailhead, it shows you where to look for the fort walls (to your right as you enter the fort, and there is very clear signage on the trail that indicates when you are entering and leaving the fort). We found that helpful for initially orientating ourselves, plus watching for additional signage along the way. The trail is 1.4 miles long, and you can loop all the way around the interior edge of the fort, if desired, or you can go out to the Ohio River Valley Overlook (or do both). We opted to do an out-and-back to the overlook because the other section of the loop seemed a bit overgrown. It's a very pretty forested area, and the overlook is excellent - you can see both Indiana and Kentucky from that point. There's a nice bench to sit and relax. It was definitely a popular spot as we saw several other groups moving along the trail and stopping at the lookout point. Signage at the lookout indicates that the last native group to use the area were the Shawnee, which is how the park's name was chosen. We really enjoyed the historical information and experience the lovely nature on the trail, plus the stunning view!

This was a great place for a family hike in Cincinnati. Great scenery and view of the Ohio River.read more

I thought I saw a beaver but in looking at pics it was a huge rat in the water eeek. But today only birds, turtles and dragonflies. Had hoped to see beaver or snakes but no luck. saw cedar waxwings but they were turned away so not the best pics and when I repositioned they flew away. sighhh. I got there late in the day and was already tired but it was a perfect weather day and got 2 days worth of steps in, but you have to be patient and bit lucky.

Finally, I saw they were hosting tours of the museum and I drove out. It's a beautiful preservation. I was informed by my wonderful tour guide who I believe was named Penny, that there have been over two hundred different bird species spotted on the grounds. You cannot bring dogs there. The tour was fantastic and my tour guide could not have been better. The museum starts with acknowledging the families the land was taken from with eminent domain and goes through life at the plant. They have the video about duck and cover playing in a little fake living room. You can search records if you know someone who worked there. Lots of stuff. There's also a conference room free for nonprofits. I thought the museum would disappoint me. And I do wish it acknowledged the people who lived there more but my tour guide was really thoughtful in that respect and I'm so glad I met her. She took me on a tour of the land where the debris was encased that's now sectioned off with fencing, too. They are not, as of this date, allowed to have a Facebook so finding their events can be challenging but definitely worth it if you have any interest is local history or military history, the cold water or uranium clean up or just nature. I learned a lot and definitely will go back.

Veteran's Park has fields and courts for multiple sports, a gated playground, and a nature trail. The playground is geared for crawling to about age eight. Everything in the play area is well taken care of. My daughter has asked to "go climb on the big cheese," (a yellow climbing cube,) multiple times since we visited. There were lots of people with bikes or dogs headed for the nature trail. My children were having so much fun of the play structure that we didn't have time to check out the nature trail. I look forward to doing that next time. Parking in front of the park is for handicap and the elderly only. Parking for everybody else is down by the Police Station/ Administrative Complex. Veteran's Park is a nice solid park when you don't want something a big as the Hamilton County Parks.

There are kites in some of the trees, evidence of a popular theme day from what I can tell. The park is close to the road so easy to locate, has a definite urban park field, but is enjoyable. The loop around the park isn't that long so if you're looking for distance, best to try another location. However, if you don't mind a few circles, a walk is really enjoyable.
