Tunes has been around since I was in high school, and have provided me with many a happy music memory since then. While I spend most of my music-buying time online, it's great to get into a store, flip through the racks of CDs, look at posters and have the record store experience every once in a while. Staff is friendly, music playing is usually good... a nice oasis in the desert of crappy bars, nail salons and banks on Washington. Also a good place to buy tickets for shows at Maxwell's - another things that's nice to do in person every now and again. read more

One of my all time favorite record stores! Incredible selection of new and used vinyl. I have spent countless hours and dollars in this place! Not very friendly staff. Went there and was given the bums rush about selling cds. The staff person Mike, who was on hand to collect my cds and dvds, asked for my number to call me, but I told him I am in the area so not call and would be back and only to find out upon my return, he said he called my house, after finished telling him not to call. Also, they give you the lowest price for cds/dvds and not to mention they don't take the things they promise on their website. WILL NOT BE BACK. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME coming here.If I could, I would give zero stars. read more

Tunes has a great selection of used and new CD, DVDs, and vinyl. I especially love shopping at the cheapo section because you can definitely count on finding an amazing 90's classic. The staff always plays great music while you browse around and they're helpful when you need to look something up. My favorite part of the Tunes experience is that they still give you that option to listen to a CD on headphones before purchasing the way we used to before the new digital age. If you have a ton of stuff lying around too, you should definitely do a buy with Tunes which means they buy your used cd and dvds that are in good condition. Keep in mind they match prices with Amazon so no, it's not going to be what you originally paid for but honestly, are you really going to ever listen to that Menudo CD ever again in your life? Since writing my first review, I've been back to Tunes at least four times, and the shop has never disappointed me. Even when I've left empty-handed (which is rare), I still came away buzzing with the excitement of a great experience. The shop always has cool music playing, and the selection of records and CDs -- though variable, like at any other establishment -- is broad, and if you look close enough, there are always several gems tucked in. The last time I went, I decided to check out the DVD selection (yes, some people still buy DVDs) and found what I consider to be one of my best purchases yet -- "Delirious," starring Michael Pitt and Steve Buscemi -- for $1.99. "Delirious" isn't the kind of movie you can just walk into a Blockbuster or FYE, or wherever the hell people actually buy new DVDs nowadays, and buy. It isn't even easy to find on the Internet. So, as you can imagine, I was very pleased. They also had a copy of Gregg Araki's "Doom Generation," which I will probably regret not buying -- and certainly regret publicizing on Yelp, lest someone decides to pick it up. In addition, the people who work at Tunes are super friendly and helpful, without being overbearing. Once, while shopping for a record for a friend's birthday, one of the shop guys -- whose name I should have gotten, out of courtesy -- offered to play the two records I'd been deciding between on the shop record player, so that I could determine which had the best sound quality. All in all, Tunes is great. Do yourself a favor and stop by. You won't regret it. read more

This is great place to find cheap used Cd's and DVDs. They have a great selection and fantastic staff. It is worth the $1.75 on PATH.

Great little record store - a vanishing breed. They have new/used CDs, Vinyl, DVDs, Video Games, Rock Mags, tickets to Maxwell's shows and other cool stuff. I came here all the time when I lived in Hoboken - now I try to make it here once a month or so, whenever I can. I usually walk out with 2 or 3 items and not too much lighter in the wallet. I'm all for technology (iTunes) and the joys of instant digital gratification however spending 20 minutes in Tunes is a more enriching experience. read more

To be honest, I was vacillating between a 2- and 3-star rating here...I opted to round this one up. Why? Simply put, I'm a sucker for used music/movies. However, I must say that my hometown does it better...if you have access to a car/can take the train down to Princeton and go to the Princeton Record Exchange. PrEx definitely has a far more extensive selection of used material than Tunes and I believe it to be well worth the trip. But to Tunes' credit, this shop does provide a nice escape from card stores/boutique-y type stores in Hoboken. I do wish they had more in the way of used CDs (yup, I'm confessing I still purchase these things) and DVDs and also that these items were better organized (many of these goods are just thrown in bins under shelves. As for pricing, new goods are definitely far from a deal, but used goods are competitive with others I've seen. read more

I've been hear many times. I absolutly love this place. They have new and used vinly. The new selection is a bit pricey but the you can get some real steals in the used section. This place also has CDs and some books as well. Places like these are few and far between and need to be supported. I know digital download is king now. I too have an IPOD and IPhone and use them both. But there is somthing about being able to put a record on and listen and hold the packaging. Makes it more tangable. If your in the area check it out. You might become a vinly fan like myself. read more

Love this place! Attractive staff. Great selection of music and their used section of items isn't bad at all, you just have to sift through some stuff. And I like that they let you take a poster you like, if you ask. (Always been a weird selling point for me and my friends to head over to Tunes.) read more

Overall Tunes is OK. It is frustrating however when you sell them CD's or records, receive an extremely low offer (but accept it since what else will you do with them besides donate) only to find Tunes right after selling your same items for literally 10 times the amount they paid you for them. I understand it's their business model but very cheap buyers and as a result do not plan on selling or buying from them again. read more

I feel almost guilty for giving one of the few remaining record stores such a mediocre score but I was genuinely displeased with my experience. I was excited when I found Tunes through Yelp while visiting a friend in North Jersey. Driving all the way up from Freehold (despite having Vintage Vinyl, we well as Asbury Park much closer) was fun because it turned into a little adventure with my friend. Prior to going, I was able to see online that my record was available - when I got there, it was not. I'm used to this happening and in retail management so I understand and wasn't phased by this happening. The girl was extremely helpful and told me she could special order the record - it would arrive in about 10 business days, I'd receive a call and I only needed to leave $5 deposit. I was told it would cost around $29 - the same price I had seen it selling for at the mall. I prefer shopping at small businesses whenever I can, so I placed the order and left that night after looking through the Used section. After three weeks, I still hadn't received a call that my record had arrived or a call even giving me an update. I called and asked what was going on - I was essentially told that the associate on the phone did not know what was taking so long but that it should be in any day and I would receive a call. Slightly disappointed, I said okay and continued waiting. As the month point came and went since my special order was placed, I started looking elsewhere for the album. I hate buying anything from Urban Outfitters, but they regularly had the album in stock - clearly it was still in print. I called again and spoke with someone else, who then had another person call me back regarding my order. I suppose I had finally spoken to a manager because he reached out to the vendor directly to try to get me some answers. I was told that he appreciated my business and that there was some sort of delay with the vendor receiving the record, and that's what caused the extended delay. About a week or so later, I received a call that my record had come in. When I went to pick it up, it was $34 ($5 more than what I had been told at the time of placing the order) and no one working could quite explain why. Considering I had driven up from Freehold to pick it up, I just paid and left. I will not return to Tunes after this experience. Far too timely for such poor service. read more

If you're walking along Washington Ave, then Tunes is a great little shop to visit. Theres so much to like about this place, its very cool. You can get some DVD gems for real cheap, and of course all media is guaranteed to work. The selection is solid but you'll need to visit every so often and check for stuff if you're an avid buyer. This is the only place I go to add stuff to my collection for cheap. Like 1.99 cheap. Same goes for music selection, solid but not outstanding. On the upside, they will order anything for you. I love this place, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I always try to support it when I'm ready to buy stuff. read more

I have been coming here for a LONG time. Staff has always been super helpful and totally open to hearing you talk about music. I LOVE this place and fully encourage everyone to at least stop in. Used records, css and DVDs along with everything brand new. In a day where music is becoming more electronic, i'm happy to see this place still in business and kicking strong. One of only 2 record stores i support in NJ. Parking is pain though but DO NOT hold that against these guys. read more

What a great store. Really great! True it's not like Pier Platters (way out of reach) where if you walked in and heard a song playing, they would take it off the turntable and sell it to you as used. Tunes totally rocks! They take a cd from the listening post and even if it were played, they'll sell it to you as brand new, not used! What a great bargain! These guys rock! read more

My son ordered a Pink Floyd record from the Tunes online store. Received the order number right of way. Have not heard from them since. After a phone call to the number they provide on the website and 3 emails later nothing. Very upsetting. My son used his gift card he got for Christmas to buy this record and now he is out $33.00. Sorry since I have no other responds from the phone call and emails I had no where else to complain to. Beware of the online store for Tunes.. read more

Was here over the weekend. Wasn't sure record stores actually still existed. My dad loves old vinyl albums and this was the perfect place to get him a birthday gift. Yes they have cds (and cool posters on the wall), but where else can you go to try and get a Beatles or Buddy Holly record. Not too many places. Go here. read more

This place rocks! It's my favorite record/music/movie shop. I get new items for good prices, but the used items are worth the trip. I got 4 used CD's for $20. I got a Jack Johnson CD, a Van Halen CD, and two of my favorite Stone Temple Pilots cd's i didn't have. The STP cd's were $2.99 EACH! The service is great, so is the location and enviornment. The entrance is weird, because the building is split with Tunes to the right, and a tanning place to the left. The enviornment is vintage. The walls and ceilings and walls sorta look like an old barber shop. Everything in the store is neat and organized. I love this place! read more

As far as record stores go, Tunes is up there on my list. They have a good selection of cd's but their selection of used vinyl is hard to beat. Records are clean, organized well and prices are fair. If you're willing to do some digging there are some great bargains to be found. They have lots of vinyl. Be prepared to spend some time. The store is easy to navigate and the staff is knowledgeable. Pleasant environment to easily spend a couple hours in. Best in the area! read more

I recently sold some vinyl there. The staff was polite, unhelpful, and unfriendly. They offered a price and then reduced it so they would make an extra dollar. They also are not careful about managing inventory if you drop it off for appraisal and then pick up so I would be hesitant to leave anything there. I'd suggest you get an immediate appraisal from them. The store is well organized and in a good location. read more

This place is a gem. I don't know how they manage to stay in business with Tower, Virgin, HMV, etc. closing, but here's hoping they have a bright future. It would be a sad day for Hoboken if they ever closed. Why are they so great? For the size of the store (which is not tiny, but definitely not a huge Tower-style megastore either) they have an excellent selection in a variety of musical genres, which is very well organized and easy to navigate. Another thing they do which I've really come to appreciate is that they have the used CDs filed correctly with the new CDs by artist. So if you're looking for a particular CD, you can instantly compare the used and new price and decide how much you're willing to pay for a pristine copy (the used CDs are always in very good condition). Their used and new prices are also very reasonable - usually a few dollars below list for new ($12-13), and used copies can be anywhere from $3 to $10. Also I haven't even mentioned their great used vinyl department. It's not quite as well organized as the CDs, but still a very pleasant way to spend an hour browsing. In conclusion, this place is definitely a local treasure. read more
