Where to start? Was in the area with some time to kill and googled for record stores near me. Tunes popped up only 15 minutes away. Let's go! A huge selection very well laid out and alphabetized for the most part. Plenty of choices on new and used albums. Very decent pricing. Found a couple dozen to add to my collection which was great. I have to single out an employee named Dylan (hope I spelled it correctly). While I was shopping, a gentleman came in who was homeless and disoriented. Most store employees would have turned up their nose and immediately gotten this "vagrant " out of the store. Dylan handled this individual with the same respect and concern as he would have any celebrity. I was thoroughly impressed. The individual left with a smile and all of his dignity. Not something you see anymore. Dylan, your momma would be proud of you. As I was checking out, he noticed one of the albums I was buying (Hair) and engaged me in a good conversation about the original playwright who happened to be local to the area. Thoroughly enjoyed my excursion to Tunes and have it pinned to return when I'm back in that area. (Or even remotely close) Only downside is parking. It's definitely city parking. Landmark record store in Hoboken. When I was a kid, whenever I heard about Hoboken, Tunes and the old Maxwell's were the two places that I wanted to check out once I was old enough to go out on my own. By that, I'm saying that their reputations preceded them, as being cool places for music - vinyl and live music, respectively. I went to Tunes for the first time with a friend of mine after class at Stevens. He lived in town and said that Tunes was a great music store. Once I stepped inside and saw all the vinyl stacks and CDs, I realized he was right. Eclectic finds, it's a great spot to browse. I've only purchased and not sold to the shop, but I can say I've always have had a good experience whenever I visit. read more

A very welcoming and fun small business of a record store. Sometimes I forget I'm even shopping. The staff are equally friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. They will take the time to assist you in finding what you're looking for musically. They also provide fine musical recommendations for one seeking something new. That said, this store has a vibrant traditional Jazz vinyl selection that rotates with new additions weekly. Chick Corea, Billie Holiday, Keith Jarrett, Duke Ellington, Ben Webster, Pat Metheny, Art Tatum, and even Anthony Braxton - these are all artists I have found and purchased records from through the Jazz section at Tunes. The Classical vinyl section is worth a look too - I have found and purchased, to my surprise, Morton Feldman, Ives, and Xenakis, alongside the Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, Operatic arias, and piano recitals one is most likely to see in used/new vinyl shop classical sections across the country. The Blues vinyl section is small in comparison but is very good - Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, and many other historic Blues Men and Women. This is hard-hitting Blues music and worth every penny. In the world vinyl section, Tunes, at the time of this writing, have a sizable and respectable collection of Merengue and Salsa records from the 70s' & 80s'. They also, from time-to-time have very good historical recordings of Tibetan, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Chinese folk music. Indian classical music LPs one can find as well whether it be Ravi Shankar or another illustrious Sitar musician or Tabla performer. Prices can range anywhere from $2 - $35 in the vinyl sections I have mentioned although I have been very satisfied with purchases under $10. I recommend taking a trip to Tunes. read more

I'm giving the full five stars to TUNES for several reasons. First of all, for a mile-square city that has 3 CVS's and about 20 coffee shops (about half of which are Starbucks or Dunkin), it's a pleasure to have this 'one of a kind' music boutique. Next, I'm often a 'seller' at TUNES, and I've always been dealt with professionally. You may earn a bit more selling individually online, but you cannot beat the convenience of selling to a local dealer. Although it's tough to fight the sentimentality when you part with vintage vinyl you've been holding, it feels good to know a shopper at TUNES will soon be enjoying that music just as you did those 'few' years ago. For the 'buyer', TUNES has a vast and eclectic collection of new/used CDs, Vinyl, and DVDs. If you like music, just browse and you'll surely find something of interest. You'll also find cool memorabilia from music, movies and television. Sadly, one of the workers was extremely rude and impatient with him as he got online twice and proceeded to shout, 'Can't you just get online once?' If you love music, this is a great independent shop to visit. Their collection is vast and interesting. I have been a vinyl collector for a good portion of my life and I have certainly found some gems here. The shop has a laid-back atmosphere. It is clean and well-organized. If you take the time to look around, you will surely find something that piques your interest. Prices are fair. Located in an area that has lots to do. I've been to better vinyl shops and I've been to worse. If you're in the area I would pop by but I wouldn't make a special trip here. Pros - Pretty good selection of vinyl with rock, pop, r&b, and even country. Pricing is pretty fair. Albums are a few dollars more than the used vinyl should be but this isn't that terrible when you compare it to the prices at Manhattan and Brooklyn vinyl shops. They have a lot of $1 bins but just know that they aren't stocked up with good finds for treasure hunters. Most of the stuff in the $1 bins is junk that should be selling for $1 or less. Definitely not a vinyl shop for treasure hunters. Cons - I don't recommend selling your vinyl here. They will give you $0.25 for an album then sell it for $10-$15. Sometimes you can stretch them to $1 for a $20 album. So you're getting pennies on the dollar. You're better off selling them on ebay than basically giving them away for free here. read more

I have been to record stores from California to Iceland and every single one in my homestate of New Jersey. I have shopped in record stores for close to 40 years. Music is, in some respects, my life. I used to live in them here - CD World, Jacks down in Red Bank - you name them. But to this day, this store, in Hoboken is my top area store. Tunes has flourished and actually grown over the years and it's not just because they only want to make money. They want to make money too (what business doesn't?) BUT THEY CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS. They're into music like you are. I cannot tell you how many times I have spent an evening or an afternoon in there looking through hundreds of CDs and being allowed to listen to whatever I wanted to (I don't abuse the privilege) and - most importantly, most critically: how many times one of the clerks helped me - really, genuinely helped me find new music. "Tropics" is a new - or relatively new solo artist out of Britain - that was but one of dozens of new artists that I was enthusiastically turned on to by the clerks there. I always find hundreds of dollars of gold. Go there. I promise you if you love music, if music means the world to you, there just isn't another store in the area quite on this level. Most are good - save this one I refuse to name - and they will certainly lend a hand but there's something about the Hoboken Tunes that is as good as it gets. My favorite store is Tonar 12 in Rejkjavik where they have a listening lounge downstairs, tons of plush couches and plush headphones and you can sit and listen all day - and they bring you free coffee all day. But, unless you want to travel to Iceland and pay around $30 a disc, this is as good as it gets in the NYC metro area. God bless Hoboken Tunes. I could go on about their great variety, their constantly getting in incredible second hand CD's, their vinyl, the sheer antiquitous charm of the old store itself, and the cool merch they have, but you'll find that out when you get there. Shop where people care about you and care about what you want, share your love of music and aren't hawking you to see how much coin you're going to drop and giving you the Stinkeye. Some music store owners are like that - sadly but I don't identify them - they're trying to make a living and not bad people. Just a drag to be around when I'm on the prowl for new tunes. Support your local store. The $1 clearance display was dazzling. New releases aren't dirt-cheap but when you load up on the used offerings it really helps out the dollar cost averaging. Today I walked in for the Replacements' Maxwell's CD and racked up many cheap impluse purchases: Sugarcubes, Mellencamp, White Stripes, Sum 41. This place left a really bad taste in my mouth. We were looking for someone who would take CDs we wanted to purge before we moved. I brought in a box of around 30-50 CDs in their cases (wish I'd counted exactly). The salesperson said she didn't have time to go through them and that if I left them behind, she would call with an offer. Understandable, although there were no other customers in the store at the time. The next day I heard back from them, offering less than $0.20 per CD. When I asked if that was all they were offering, they said (and this is the irritating part) that half the cases did not even have CDs in them (I'm a very organized person, I know that almost 100% of the CDs were in their own cases and I double-checked at home to see if any of the CDs had been left behind, so this strained credulity). My primary objective being purging anyways and hoping that the CDs would be enjoyed by others and not end up in a landfill, I accepted the offer and asked them to send me the less than $10. They said they "don't do none of that" and that I needed to make a trip to the store again (I do not live in Hoboken) to pick up the cash. I decided then that I would donate the CDs to their store and not return to claim the paltry sum they offered. I will, however, never be doing business with them again. I love shopping at Tunes, always warmly greeted by the lovely Sepulveda sisters and the owner Chip couldn't be nicer. There's this guy Mike Rosenberg who works there but other than that! Just kidding he is very groovy and helpful with his vast musical knowledge. Tunes was an important part of my development as a record consumer as a teenager. Every other week I would go and drop about $20 and walk away with three used CDs the fact that stores like this and Princeton Record Exchange are still standing in the age of I-Tunes is simply amazing. AMAZING SELECTION of USED CDs and DVDs. Super friendly staff that is knowledgeable about all genres. And your always bound to discover new music playing at this store. The fact that they are still standing in the SEVERELY OVERPRICED NORTH EAST is that much more miraculous. (HOBOKEN AT THAT!) (For the West Coast readers Hoboken NJ rents make Santa Monica rents look EXTREMELY affordable by comparison.) Tunes I don't know how they do it still but I am glad they do! Tunes is a throwback to pre-digital times. This may sound obvious because, well, it's a record store, but I'm talkin' more along the lines of the good ol' 1990s, when CDs were king, lining up at your local shop was the preferred method for scoring tickets to your favorite band's show, and no one was quite sure yet which one was Hootie and which one was The Blowfish. Simpler times, people. So, how does this differ from, say, New York City record stores? First off, the Tunes staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and the furthest thing from condescending. Try and get this service in the Village - you'll be lucky they even make eye contact. And Tunes prices are cheap! I've found records here I'd scoured other places for, ready to pay double what this fine establishment had on the price tag. Oh, what's that you say? They're cheap because they aren't first-edition-limited-press-Japanese-import-double-mint quality? Well, they play just fine on my record player, so I think I'll live. Thankfully, I was in Hoboken on Record Store Day, because Tunes had every title on my checklist, when I had thought I might be lucky enough to get, oh, maybe just one of them. The place was bustling, shit was in stock, and the dudes working there were happy as all hell. There have been times I've gone into other records stores in that other city across the Hudson and it's taken them days to get new releases in - and always been told this with attitude, mind you, as if it's my fault I came in on the Tuesday the album was droppin'. You won't get that at Tunes. Tunes is the golden boy, the unsung hero, the local spot, the little record store that could. Tunes is the first place you look and the last place you'll have to. Tunes is a great little CD and vinyl shop where you can also buy local tickets to events at places like Maxwell's and other partner venues. They'll buy your used CD's and spark your memory for CD's you used to have, which will trap you into a void where you search endlessly through their new and used selections, trying to find that one hit from 1992 you used rock out full amps up in your car. There is something tactile and comforting about walking into a music shop, spotting a t-shirt or a collectible lunchbox of a band you used to like, and perusing local show listings on a poster instead of on the web at Brooklyn Vegan or Pitchfork. When I moved to Hoboken in July 2009, the first thing I did other then unpack boxes was walk to Tunes. I remember our real estate agent telling me specifically when I came along with my folks to see the new house that as a music fan, I'd be spending a lot of time there and at Maxwells. She couldn't have been more right. I think that other then rent, I've spent more money at Tunes in Hoboken then on anything else in this town in the last five years. No, I'm not joking. I'm a vinyl, CD, blu ray, DVD junkie and I'd venture to guess that I've bought 50% records of my collection, 65% of my DVDs/blu ray and 40% of my CDs at Tunes and I have 227 records/96 movies/132 CDs currently in my collection. That doesn't count trades over the years of buys/trades/buys. This store is laid out perfectly, simple as that. The new releases are there as soon as you walk in so if you're looking for the hot new album, there's rarely a need to search. There's TV box set DVDs, then a plethora of used DVDs to explore. There are the usual ones to find but I've found some real gems in there and hilariously bad B movies. There is a growing blu ray section with a pretty diverse selection all things being equal. Towards the back are the rock CDs and the vinyl. I must say Tunes is REAL short on new vinyl. It's really sad as it's gone quite downhill in that regard, but the used selection makes up for it quite frankly and what there is in the new area is usually of high quality. Unlike most stores, the clearance bin of dollar CDs doesn't totally suck. This is actually quite a plus and it's real fun to look through it to see what's it there. Sometimes you might find a cool score. Oh, Tunes sells used stereo equipment as well, including turntables. I once saw a used pair of Bowers and Wilkens bookshelf 600 series speakers back there so it's always worth a look. Those are really high quality, so it's not like Tunes sells junk. One of the best things about Tunes is they will special order albums if you want. I had them order RX Bandits "Mandela" for me a few years back and it was easy as anything. They get it shipped to the store, you pick it up and boom. No hassle. I personally find the folks who work there to be easy to deal with, if not engaging off the bat. This is a positive. They are really nice if you approach them but it's not like they are in your face or anything. It's a real laid back vibe in the shop. I actually picked up Black Flags "The First Four Years" compilation here as per a spoken word album of another modern day philosopher. It truly was the densest batch of jams since the funhouse album by the stooges. Both recommended by Hank and by Carl. read more

It breaks my heart not to give this place five stars, but I just can't. But let's talk about what's great here. They always have good music playing--there's nothing worse than spending time in a record store where they either try to play screechingly terrible music to challenge you or whatever is hot right now to show you that they're on top of things. These guys play music that's a great balance. It's also laid out very well. You know where to go, it's a good space and you can spend hours browsing for sure. Their selection is solid if maybe a little lighter than what you'd expect. So why isn't it five stars? Well the employees really vary--some of them are somewhat helpful and quite nice, and others won't look you in the eye and make it seem like they're doing you a favor helping you. Then there's the prices. I don't think these are even close to the best used prices you'll find--which really really surprises me given the inventory they must get. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places..? Their new albums are also more expensive than what I'd expect. At least a dollar or two above what I'd see at PREX or even Other Music. Maybe that's the cost of doing business on Washington Street. Don't get me wrong--I still love this place. But it's not five stars. read more

I've sold so much, from CD's & DVD's to Blu-Ray (had a roommate that moved out and took his PS3 with him). They give you the best possible price on just about anything and will give you 20% more if you take store credit. i haven't sold video games to them, but I'm going to imagine they are just as competitive, and will give you better than gamestop will. I've never been disappointed with a trip to Tunes. read more

You can find some classics at unbeatable prices if youre willing to do some digging-- part of the vinyl shop experience. WOW. A place I wish I knew about years ago. A stock filled with used VHS tapes, original records, and DVDs/CDs. The record selection was impressive and I wanted to buy a massive amount of it. I bought used VHS tapes and records that, to me, are just as good as having them new. On top of this, everything is dirt cheap. I payed as low as 50 cents for an item. Amazing. Everyone should go there and find their old favorites.. just don't take all the good stuff! Edit (months later): Each time I go back here, I am more and more pleased! A business is only as good as their employees... Tunes employees are so unbelievably helpful. Let me give you an example - I visited the store and left without purchasing anything. That night, I felt bad because there was something I wanted. So, I went back the next day and the item was gone. I asked the guy behind the counter if they had any more in stock and he said, "Well, we only have one, but it hasn't been sold. It's here somewhere." He worked with me for about 20 minutes searching for it. Turns out - it was simply placed in the wrong section by accident. Fabulous customer service. Other than the great customer service - the place is alright. They have a great collection of cds, dvds and a nice vinyl selection, as well. I've seen cds with stickers as low as $2.99 and I've seen dvds that cost the same as in Best Buy. It's a great local spot! Situated within a decent walking distance from the lightrail and PATH stops, and a few doors down from The Mile Square Pub, TUNES is the kind of shop I go to when I just don't feel like getting my CDs or DVDs online from Amazon and knowing that I can get the same, if not better price from TUNES -- minus the cost of shipping! YAY!!! Their selection in movies and music is tremendous and if they don't have what you're looking for they'll order it! No robots to talk to online or on the phone ... Horrible. This place is the epitome of bad service. The variety of content in this store will not make up for the terrible rude service the staff guy gives you. I went here over the weekend excited to stop by and check out more CDs for my collection. I asked the staff guy with glasses a simple question about any vocal jazz artists he might recommend. He responded to me in a rude, CONDESCENDING tone telling me to be more specific about what I was asking. I was as clear as can be, and that experience left me angry and disgusted when I left. A good business should be able to provide FRIENDLY, CONVENIENT service to customers for anything they need. Tunes fails to deliver on that aspect however. I know a lot of way better record stores in Jersey like Jack's Music Shoppe in Red Bank and Hold Fast Records in Asbury Park. Save yourself the horrible experience and go to one of those shops instead. WOULD NOT recommend. I am rating this one star because I cannot give it zero stars. Case closed. read more

I used to date a woman from NJ who worked in Hoboken, and I really liked hanging out in the area. After about 8 years, I decided to visit Hoboken again. Sadly, many of my favorite places are no longer around. I am glad that Tunes is still there. Tunes has a great selection of new and used CDs, DVDs, & vinyl records. The prices are very good. During one visit, I was able to buy 5 R.E.M. CDs for the same price as one from Tower Records (I still mourn the closing of that store!). While going through the DVDs, many movies were selling for $1.99, and these were popular movies in the theaters, not direct-to-video. The store is very well organized. Unlike some other used music and video places, the DVDs and CDs are organized alphabetically, not just thrown together by genre. The store has a very casual atmosphere, It is a great place to browse, and it is definitely worth hopping on the Path train to visit here. read more

This record stores prices on used vinyl has went up exponentially over the last year. The used records are priced exactly to discogs median, sometimes over the median. I used to go there 2-3 times a week, now i go once a month, if i around the area. Why should o go to a reord store if i can get the same titles on discogs for the same prices, and sometimes cheaper? Tunes used to be a great store, with fair prices, but now its just another record store with discogs median prices. There was a time i would spend $200 on used records here, now i barely spend $20. If you read the other reviews you will see similar issues. if the owners are reading this, i would suggest not charging top dollar for common rock records, and think about the die hard record collectors who will be around after the vinyl revival dies. read more

Walked past Tunes with a friend and we stopped by. It has been a few years. Found they have a new clearance section and picked up some good 90s CDs for a $1 each - POD, Filter, Barenaked Ladies, etc. It was also quite refreshing to see they sell used iPods and other music players. In an era when post people simply toss away these consumables, they are trying to recycle here organically and help those with less funds to afford music. Kudos! read more

Tunes has been around since I was in high school, and have provided me with many a happy music memory since then. While I spend most of my music-buying time online, it's great to get into a store, flip through the racks of CDs, look at posters and have the record store experience every once in a while. Staff is friendly, music playing is usually good... a nice oasis in the desert of crappy bars, nail salons and banks on Washington. Also a good place to buy tickets for shows at Maxwell's - another things that's nice to do in person every now and again. read more
