The renovation in 2018 ruined it. Walking through the doors feels like walking into a cramped art gallery or warehouse or airport terminal... you get the gist. Lighting is very bright, display tables and book shelves feel cramped together, and it gets very loud and crowded. Seating area is tight and limited. Want to read, study, or work here? Then you have to come earlier in the day (9-11am) to snag a spot. Need to use electronics to work or study? Then you have to come extra early to grab a spot with an outlet; not all tables have outlets nearby and there aren't enough for everyone. All of these things make it difficult to do anything here. They have their own cafe that serves Starbucks products. The best drink is the brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso. I've tried a few other drinks like the refreshers but they are just average. The biggest ick for me is that I pay close to $8 for a large cup of 70-80% ice even after requesting light ice. Can I get a hell no. Other than that, the employees are polite and friendly. Service can be slow at times but I believe it's a staffing issue. I don't think it's fair that sometimes there is only one of them to take orders and make drinks. This is probably better off as just a grab and go cafe for shoppers. The ambiance is really lacking on what a bookstore is supposed to be like.

The guy literally saw me carefully let the book slide out of the sleeve and the guy gave me a lecture on how to do it properly, which is the way I did it, and what not to do. At one point, I had my phone out to see what books I am still looking for and which ones I have and the guy said that I need to put my phone away and use two hands to look at books. I wasn't even touching any books!! I thought this customer service was terrible. I don't need to be lectured how to look at a book when I'm not even touching any of them after he gave me the proper way to take a book out of its sleeve, which I did correctly. Also, the book price on the sleeved book is not the same as what the sign said on top. The sign was more and he said that no prices are written on the books with a book sleeve, which was a complete lie.

They specialize in 19th and 20th century English and American literature, which means you're going to see a lot of titles you're familiar with. I stopped in late in their day, so I wasn't surprised to be the only one there, but the team gave me space, answered very basic questions I had, and - gasp - LET ME TOUCH THE BOOKS. Well, 45 minutes later, I was still oohing and awing at the marvelous selection of first edition books they have to offer. This is the largest selection (aside from corporate-owned Bauman's) of rare books I've seen that include the dust jacket- a collectors actual dream. It's the biggest breath of fresh air to find a rare book store owned by a woman, and to be treated like a human being. I normally get side-eyed from rare bookstore owners and some of the conversations I've had sound like: "May I see the Portrait of a Lady in the case?" "All of these books are at least $100.00 and up." ".....I know." "Do you have any Wilde?" "The book about the woman hiking alone? That's too new to be in our shop, Barnes & Noble would have it." "I'm talking about the 1800s poet." "Oh." I take it personally because while I look like a millennial who doesn't know what she's talking about, I treasure my rare books like they're my children. Sunday stayed AN EXTRA HOUR at her store while I looked and answered all of my questions that I had, never making me feel rushed or unwelcome. After selecting a first edition Fitzgerald, she wrapped it in bubble wrap for my travels back home and gave me an updated book with all of the rare book sellers in the country.
