They also had a nice array of photo props inside the main jail & scattered around the grounds. Additionally, the historical research was very informative of the demographic, climate, and age in which the jail was operational & for some time afterwards. For more insight, I recommend picking up a copy of "Within Adobe Walls" by Pete "Smokey" Dryer in the gift shop on your way out.

Great place to visit and learn about how it became and who are the prisoners and their history (which similar to current ones). How it opened and closed and how it developed through that small period. What you see now is just a portion of the original but you got the picture of how the life in prison back then. The guider was fantastic and he informed us all the infos and the background of all or majority of the prisoners. Definitely quite a place to visit plus this prison would considered the 2nd island prison in the US.

Specifically, it includes: (1) the Yuma Crossing Historic Landmark, (2) the Yuma Territorial Prison - very cool; (3) Colorado River State Historic Parks; and (4) 3 miles of riverfront parks, trails and 350 acres of restored wetlands. National Heritage Areas are places where historic, cultural and national resources combine to form cohesive, nationally important landscapes. Yuma is the oldest city established on the Colorado River. Really interesting to learn about the history of Yuma, and the story of the River and its impact on the people and land. Beautiful place to walk and enjoy the River, too.

A neat stop if you are traveling along highway 8, near the US/Mexico border. This was a road used…read morein the early 1900s to get all the way to San Diego. Prior to this trip, I had no idea such a road existed. You have to exit the highway and backtrack a little bit to reach the historic site. You can view the remainder of the wooden planks, which have a barrier surrounding them. When you park at the historic site, you can see the US/Mexico border wall, so you get to see 2 landmarks at once. Lots of border patrol trucks and personnel patrolling the area along with tons of border cameras everywhere.

There is also a side, smaller area for toddlers with smaller slides, swings, climbing tubes, etc. Along the perimeter there is a traditional zip line and one with a chair. It was really eerie. So my wife decided to give the office a call. She spoke to Felicia who was very friendly and welcoming. She gave us a quick tour and had is watch an informative video which made a bit more sense in terms of what this place was all about. Within minutes we made our way to the Puramid which why we stopped in the first place. We stepped on the center of the world, made a wish and received an official certificate. Afterwards, we made our way to the chapel on the hill. It provides a great view of the museum of granite and the pyramid. Lots of information is etched into the granite. You can't possibly read it all in one visit. There is also a maze. We didn't make it in as it was over 100 degrees! Was it worth the price of admission? Yes. Would I do it again? Yes, but probably when it is cooler. If we ever find ourselves here again, I'll make it a point to read everything.

They have a big gift shop with random knick-knacks. You pay $10 to explore the grounds which includes a tiny chapel on elevated mound of earth, a replica of a chapel in Brittany, France. The park has bathrooms, picnic tables under a large pavilion, a play ground, and a sandy beach. There's even an outdoor shower for cleaning off the sand when you're done. On an August weekday around noon, there were multiple families at the park to lounge and swim. The bridge provides ample shade for sitting on the beach or swimming in the water. The water was clear and looked clean. Some kids had tied a rope swing to the bridge and were swing jumping into the water - so fun! Yuma is HOT and frankly quite ugly, without much to offer the passerby outside of food, fuel, and the prison (also worth a stop!!). Gateway Park is an exception - a beautiful spot and a great break point for the weary traveler. Bring swimsuits - you won't just want to dip your feet in!

This isn't a full blown rest area - no bathrooms or vending machines. But you can still park and…read morerelax for a bit if you need to and sometimes you just gotta. If you packed a lunch or some snacks this is a good place to chill and eat as well and they even have trash cans so you can get rid of your garbage. The westbound side has a little hill you can climb for fun. If it's dark and the place isn't crowded and you really have to... well, you get the picture.... Because of the lack of facilities this place never seems to be very crowded - a couple of trucks or so. The nearest rest area to the east used to be Mohawk Rest Area before they shut it down and coned it off so this makes for an alternative if you don't really need the facilities and just want to rest.

It's also 3 1/2 miles (more or less) of a rolling paved trail perfect for either jogging, walking with or without pets (as well as wheelchair accessible), etc. It's near the main road ico visabilty while also enjoying the natural surroundings of the area. I bring a water source, snacks and wear sunscreen and use it before noon, but that's just me. Currently, the base is restricted to essential employees, housing residents and authorized RV'ers. Consider checking it out if you are able.
