To me, enjoying a delicious cake is an important part of celebrating a birthday. I came across Tu Madres Bakery in my research for a local, artisanal small-batch bakery, and was intrigued by the delicious flavor combinations on their website and glowing reviews. Booking a phone consultation and subsequently placing an order through their website was a quick and easy process. I ordered a 10" 3-layer banana cake with chocolate ganache and milk chocolate buttercream frosting. I opted for a simple design with a ganache drip. The cake looked beautiful, but more importantly tasted absolutely delicious. I'm very particular about my desserts, and prefer the depth of flavors over cloying sweetness; I'm pleased to report that the cake hit on all levels! The banana cake was delicate, moist and had a subtle spice that complemented the decadence of the dark chocolate ganache. The milk chocolate buttercream had the perfect amount of sweetness. Overall, the rich flavors melded beautifully together, and I'd rather not admit how much of this scrumptious treat I could eat in one sitting. The real icing on the cake however, was the wonderful experience of working with the owner, Sarah - who was so sweet and helpful. Thank you for making my birthday feel special. I highly recommend Tu Madres Bakery for your special occasion!

Every time we order a cake from Tu Madres, I am blown away by her attention to detail. (I mean, just look at what they accomplished with our custom beer cake order below!) THEN we slice into it, and the flavor is consistently tasty and decadent. Her latin treats are also second to none. Best bakery in San Diego!

We've been using Tu Madres Bakery for pretty much any event that needs a tasty cake. It's a hit every single time and there's none of it left by the end of the party. The cakes taste just as good as they look. She takes the things you like and puts them into a magical and yummy creation. Our entire group of friends uses her and we all look forward to tasting her next creation. I've included a few photos from a baby shower cake she most recently made, to a gender reveal cake, and a birthday cake she had made for me back in March.

Beautiful wedding cake for about 25-30 people

So delicious!!! Seriously this cake was BOMB and beautiful. Designing it with the baker was easy and fun. Also an excellent price for a wedding/event cake. Now I need to throw events just to have reason to order these cakes :)

    Birthday cake was delicious!

love Tu Madres bakery. We have had our baby showers (two of them) and kid birthday cakes done. Not only do they look great but are delicious.

2 Tier Wedding Cake: Top Tier 6" 2 Layers, Bottom Tier 8" 2 Layers. Coconut cake with coconut frosting and guava cake with lemon buttercream

I have nothing but great things to say about Tu Madres Bakery! Sarah creates stunning and delicious cakes and baked goods, and goes above and beyond for her customers! We hired Tu Madres Bakery to make our cake and items for our dessert table for our wedding reception. We ordered a small cake (One layer was coconut cake with coconut buttercream, and the other layer was guava cake with guava filling and lemon buttercream), cupcakes (guava with lemon cream cheese buttercream and coconut with milk chocolate buttercream), and mini lemon cheesecake bites. All items were delivered and Sarah set all the desserts out on our table that was already decorated with all the serving platters, cake stands, and cupcake stands. It was extremely helpful, as I was too busy hosting a reception to have the time to do that myself, so Sarah was a lifesaver! The desserts were the highlight of the wedding, and my guests are still talking about how delicious the desserts were! Sarah is so talented and was able to flawlessly create the vision that I had. If anyone is in need of a wedding cake or birthday cake, I would highly recommend getting one from Tu Madres Bakery!

8" 3 layer funfetti cake with milk chocolate buttercream and unicorn cake finish

Definitely will be coming back for future cake needs. Cake was delicious, there was none left by the end since everyone kept raving about how good it was. Ordering was very simple through the website and was able to add customization package to make it fit the theme. Communication was great and cake was ready on time, Sarah helped me set it up in the car and ensured the ride home would be perfect for the cake.

Latina locally made cakes that are so yummy! Sarah has done so many events for me. The best quality and reasonably priced. She is always willing to work with your budget. My favorites are the guava and pineapple upside down cakes. You will not be disappointed!

Best bakery ever! Check out the variety of cookies. My favorites where chocolate chip and walnut. Thank you!

3 Tier, 4 layer wedding cake. Vanilla Cake w/ Fresh Strawberry compote

I stumbled across Tu Madres bakery on yelp a month or two before my wedding. I also wanted to support small businesses in San Diego as well, so it was the best fit. I was able to schedule an appointment with Sarah and go over what I had envisioned for my wedding. Sarah was AMAZING, she is very professional, communicable, and knows her cakes! She created a 3 tier wedding cake (35lbs) which fed all 100 of my quest! The cake was perfect, not too sweet as asked. The fresh strawberry compote was to die for! I was a semi naked cake with flowers to keep it simple. She made it EXACTLY how I wanted it, even better tbh. Our guest loved the cake and they still talk about it to this day!!! We are so lucky to have found Sarah and will continue to recommend her to everyone in need of a cake!10/10 recommended!

Their cakes may be pricey, but…read morein my opinion, for the amount of work, effort, and quality of ingredients, I think they continue to be fair. For example, some other specialty bakeries/shops are charging similar prices for cakes and cheesecakes that are much simpler. In comparison, Extraordinary Dessert cakes take 3-4 days to make, have 6-8 alternating layers, and are typically adorned with edible gold and/or flowers. The key is to find which items you like and which are okay to pass on next time. What we ried this time: -Match Misu Cake (7/10): ricotta cake layers soaked in matcha and layered with marscapone whipped cream. This one was pretty good and ranks in my middle to high range. I only wish there was more matcha flavor (maybe if you dine in and get the sauce, this would help) or the matcha was paired with another flavor ... either go fruity (maybe a raspberry sauce, strawberry pieces, white peach pieces, or like a peach oolong cream layer) or go chocolately/coffee (maybe had some crushed up chocolate covered espresso beans). My go to's: -Ivoire Royale (10/10) - my ultimate favorite still. If you like light desserts, white chocolate, berries, and moist vanilla cake, thus one is for you. Classy and unpretentious -Shangrila (10/10) - my other favorite and will make you feel like a princess with all the pink chocolate curls. A little bit adventurous and innocently elegant. Ones to skip: -Au Chocolate / La Bete Noire / Dame Chocolate - get the Viking instead. That's my favorite of all their chocolate cakes -Lemon ricotta - get the Passionfruit Ricotta instead -Torta misu - the matcha misu is better. The tortilla misuse made me want a regular piece of tirmaisu than a cake version -Coconut cream - not bad, not amazing though

Also just so everyone is aware they're also liars just to mention & stupid.. she tells us her name is Karen thinking we don't know the owners name lol .. She was at the register at 7:20pm and was extremely rude and dismissive after we placed our order, especially regarding a child's dietary restrictions and health concerns. We politely asked if it would be possible to purchase a small cup of fruit , even just a couple strawberries cut up, because one child in our group cannot have sweets due to very strict dietary restrictions . Instead of simply saying they were unable to accommodate the request or offering another option, we were told to "go somewhere else," despite already spending the amount we did . The complete lack of professionalism and basic customer service was honestly shocking. It's disappointing to be treated that way at a place we have supported so consistently. This place has been going downhill , management for this place needs to step up .

One would think that, in such dark times, one could still find even a glimpse of hope in an ice cream cone. I was proven wrong, and my outlook on the current state of affairs only dimmed further. I ate my ice cream in two bites. Twenty dollars for two cones, four bites total. I didn't even bother feeding my son the pup cup. He deserves better. The world deserves better. Bigger portions.
