We also got complimentary edamame, which was good but overly salted to make you order more lol Bf ordered the salmon skin roll, which came out topper with fried onions. There was an asterisk next to each of our rolls and we didn't know why but didn't ask about. Turns out our rolls came out spicy so I think that's what the asterisks meant. Didn't matter a whole lot because the rolls were both very good. For cocktails I asked our server which drink is sweeter, the plum based one at the top or the lime one below it. We ordered the cinco de aburi, uni cream pasta, takoyaki, lion king roll, tsukiyo roll, and the spider roll. The cinco de aburi had a nice peppery taste and was presented beautifully. The uni cream pasta had a sliver of uni - which is probably why it is priced $19.99. It was creamy and quite delicious. I wish I had more of the uni flavor and maybe masago/fish roe to help develop a more seafood profile. The rolls weren't anything that wow'ed us. I think I may have found one of my new favorite sushi spots in OC. Genuinely feels like you've stepped into a small, tucked-away sushi bar in Japan. The decor is minimal, warm, and thoughtfully done, and it sets the tone for the whole meal. Service was excellent. The servers were attentive and friendly. What stood out most to me is that this place goes way beyond just standard nigiri. Yes, they have a wide and really fresh selection of fish, but they also offer a surprisingly extensive menu of creative appetisers and entrees, and everything I tried was executed really well. Mentaiko pasta - 9/10 Creamy, umami, rich, slightly spicy, and perfectly al dente. The portion size is great for the price and honestly just spectacular overall. Oyster & clam crudo - 9/10 Extremely fresh and packed with flavour. Not much else needs to be said. The Monk - 8/10 Ankimo served over ponzu jelly. The ankimo itself was super high quality and well-prepared. My only critique is that there was a bit too much ponzu jelly, which made each bite lean slightly salty. Otherwise, the flavour combination was really well done. Nigiri - 8.5/10 Great variety and super fresh fish. I also really liked the garnishes which added a nice layer of complexity to each piece. Only small downside is that a few pieces had rice that broke apart a little too easily. Overall, Tsukiyo is doing a lot right. We ordered the CHICKEN KARAAGE $9, gyoza $5, jalapeño poppers $8, bluefin tuna, salmon, albacore, yellowtail, and shrimp, as well as the Lion King roll $17. The chicken karaage and gyoza were pretty good. The chicken karaage was very fresh and crispy, and the order was large. I would get those two items again. I didn't really care for the jalapeño poppers. As far as the sushi pieces, the bluefin tuna was okay, and the SALMON was the best- fresh and melt-in- your-mouth goodness. The rest of the sushi we ordered was not fresh and very disappointing. The Lion King roll was one of the most disappointing cut rolls I have had. It came with salmon, shrimp tempura, spicy crab, cucumber, avocado, and shredded crabstick on top. The fish was not fresh, had way too much imitation crab, and overwhelmed with mayo. All I could taste was mayo :( Service was okay, although the restaurant was busy on a weeknight and we had to ask our server for napkins and a refill on the water. I will not be coming here again. We started with an appetizer, the brussel sprouts tempura with truffle. It was sooo good-crispy, savory, and the perfect amount of truffle flavor! There's bar seating as well as table and booth seats. They can combine tables for larger parties, which is nice. We had the sushi set in mind but we also ordered additional side dishes since we were fairly hungry. Everything we ordered was pretty good. Really enjoyed the Smoke Bomb and the oyster crudo. Smoke Bomb came on a covered platter and we got a show of the smoke emitting out as the platter was uncovered. Could taste the smoky flavor of the crispy rice as well as the fish and avocado on top. Highly recommend. As for the oyster crudo - $4.99 for each one, kind of pricey but the oyster comes with some jelly on top. Mixed it with lemon juice and it was pretty tasty! And the sushi lunch set - $24.99 (10 pieces and 2 futomaki pieces) was incredibly filling. This came with a salad and miso soup. Out of all the fish, I enjoyed the salmon and yellowtail the most. What would have been a 5/5 food experience turned to a 3/5 because of the service. In regard to food & ambiance, the food was delicious. We got the Uni Cream Pasta, Dinner Sushi Set and Cinco de Aburi which were all high quality, rich in flavor with thoughtful and beautiful presentation. The place is cute and quaint but not very big so be prepared to wait a bit. But the mistakes in delays and incorrect food preparation really negatively impacted the overall experience. First mistake, after we received 3/4 of our orders, we started to wonder why our last order (Cinco De Aburi) was taking so long to be brought out. Even the sushi set that consisted of 12 different types of sushi preparation arrived before the Cinco De Aburi, which is only 5 sushi pieces. When kindly asking our server to follow up on it, she comes back to tell us they ended up giving it to another table...Fine, mistakes happen but it delayed our dinner around 20 mins and altered the experience of my boyfriend and I being able to eat & enjoy our orders together as we didn't want to let the rest of the food to just sit there since we had already been waiting so long. Second mistake, we ordered their version of the affogato for dessert - which is a cup of vanilla ice cream to be served with a coffee liqueur and other toppings. When that was brought out, we get a plain cup of ice cream. Again, we understand mistakes and miscommunications happen - both my boyfriend and I having extensive experience in customer service, one of it being food service specifically - and we were very understanding throughout the process but failed to receive any type of compensation or consolation for all the delays and mistakes that not only happened once but twice. Which is really the most disappointing part. Otherwise, the servers we had were nice and knowledgeable of the menu and it was never an issue with attitude or disrespect. Just wished the protocol for such a seemingly highly rated place like this was better when it came to situations like this - as it ruins the overall dining experience and takes away from the wonderful food. We were initially so excited to come back to try everything else that was appealing in their menu that we weren't able to order this time around.
