The food is ok but the customer service was amateurish. I've been two times, several weeks apart and both times I've left disappointed.

Delicious ramen & gyoza My husband ordered a tonkotsu chashu…read moreramen and I ordered the gyoza for lunch. The ramen was excellent - the broth was very rich and porky and the toppings (soft boiled egg, bamboo shoots, nori, bean sprouts and spring onions) were super tasty. The gyoza were excellent too - super thin skins with a moist tasty filling.

Guys. This is the best char-siu I've ever had in my life. I…read morecould taste the char, the fire on the edges of the pork. It was appropriately fatty, but not all fat, you know? Now it's been over a year since I've had Totto (NYC, my favorite), and my tongue might be spoiled from eating bad ramen at like 5 places in Atlanta. But I am willing to say this was #1. Hakoya opened on the corner of a new "laneway" in the Upper West Side building (Lonsdale and Rose Lane) - it appears to have been open since November. There are 4 tables along the wall, with a bit of privacy from hanging dividers (noren?), as well as about 10 seats along a bar, which faces the kitchen. The menu is tight, as you should expect. I had my regular ramen order, spicy tonkatsu. You can choose your spicy - 1 pepper, 2, or 3. This nearly unnerved me and I had to ask the server for help on my decision. I played it safe and went with 2... I made the right choice. Balancing the two heats (spice and temperature), it's just enough to make you feel like you broke a sweat without actually breaking one. I always forget that the ramen being so hot makes the spice... well, spicier. A cold Sapporo kept me on the non-sweaty side of dinner. Between each seat are the accouterments you may need - soy, sesame, chili oil, garlic paste, pickled ginger - as well as wooden chopsticks (nice touch to match with the wooden spoon), napkins, and water jug and glasses. Easy. Every day there appears to be a happy hour, $4 for Sapporos between 3pm and 6pm. Highly recommend, and since I'm here for 2 weeks, I expect to be back!

Every time we asked them for something even ordering food they rolled their eyes! I literally had to get up to get everything that I want every time. The utensils were on the counter and they were standing right in front of it and they didn't even bother to move at least so I can get what I want. For the restroom they told that I have to leave my cellphone to get a key from them!!!! Horrible service. Food was very average. And didn't taste original at all!
Menu. One side is English, the other side is Japanese. You mark what you want.
The spicy tonkatsu ramen. Perfection.

Service was efficient and when you are ordering you can also customize your ramen which is nice. What was disappointing was sadly the ramen, I got the signature broth and it was definitely lacking flavor and almost tasted "soap-y". The pork was a bit too chewy as well. The noodles were cooked just right though and had a great bite. Overall, didn't match my personal flavor profile and I might have been better off ordering something outside of just the basic signature like their black garlic or spicy for more flavor. They also have pickled veggies and minced garlic at the table which helps.

Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but the vast majority of the choices are pork. I'm not only ok and supportive of that, but also thinking that it's the authentic Japanese way. The karaage was nice - prepared in balls rather than flat as I usually see it. We also enjoyed some edamame to start. They have a few different kinds of umeshu, which I'd say is an acquired taste. A bit too sweet for me, but I know some people who would love it. We'd gladly return to Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen whenever we're in Melbourne.

There is an ample selection of items: a well stocked sushi takeaway section, a deli counter to choose your own bento and what I came to try, the ramen! There are a few udon and ramen choices: veg, chicken and pork (chasiu). I opted for the pork ramen (@ $12.50) and went upstairs to wait for my order. Less than 10 minutes later my mid-sized bowl of ramen arrived. Happily, all the right elements were in place for a satisfying bowl! A generous portion of egg noodles, several tender slices of pork, a creamy rich broth, bamboo shoots, seaweed, fishcake, green onions and roasted garlic. The serving size was perfect and however filling it was I could not help but to continue to slurp it down. Staff were friendly and attentive and the space was well accommodating. It was clean and well stocked. They cater to the NAB lunch crowd so the professionalism is well matched. Prices are reasonable and I walked away very happy with my meal.
