    Gyoza -to die for
    Adrianna P.

Shujinko truly is a hero. Ramen, because nothing's better on a rainy day. I heard this place was good, but oh my it was so much more than good. It was AMAZING. All of the ramens look amazing but I went with the signature Shujinko Ramen, Tonkotsu soup base (pork broth). Served with bok choy, spring onion, bean sprout, marinated egg and grilled pork belly. Every slurp was pure ecstasy. a bowl will run you about $14.50, worth every cent. It was creamy, full of garlic, and the noodles were perfect. Nice size portion as well. It's a shame I don't live in Melbourne because I would be back weekly. I also indulged in the signature Gyoza, pan-fried, crispy outside and juicy inside $8. These are not to be missed. They are served with a chili oil and these plump goodies are to die for. Highly recommend, cute ambiance, nice service, and the food is to die for. Ramen love with you Shujinko.

Husband is wildly in love with this place. We stumbled across this place on our way back to our hotel. He loves ramen (I'm not a huge fan but I had to let him choose a place) so in we went. It was getting a little late so no wait and it wasn't insanely busy, but still quite a few customers. We started with an order of edamame which was AWESOME. Hubs ordered pork ramen, and I ordered vegetable ramen. He devoured his ramen and some of mine (I couldn't finish it, serving is huge). He said it was very authentic. I thought the broth was a bit on the salty side for my taste but the edamame and drinks were stellar so five stars. He also had a Kirin beer and I ordered some cold sake which was really good. Atmosphere is different, fast Japanese techno music. Service is prompt and friendly. You can watch the chefs cooking food. A great place if you are craving some authentic ramen.

Having been a year since I was able to come here again and having a selection of dishes, I can honestly say it is deserving of five stars. Perfectly cooked noodles with a deliciously spicy broth, the Karakuchi ramen does not disappoint. They have also added an extra slice of pork and more noodles, so it is a filling meal. My companion had the Yaki ramen, a nice blend of sauce coating noodles with a blend of egg and other toppings. The chicken karaage was a bit chewy but complemented by the seaweed and green salad. This shop can be counted on anytime of day or night to get your ramen fix. Absolutely delicious!

    Spicy ramen. Wasn't spicy.

Rich, fattening, tasty ramen, huge kara age portions, fresh Kirin on draft, and they're open 24/7?!? That said, they're not innovative or exceptional, and while I'm not super familiar with Melbourne... the worldwide ramen scene is growing like crazy these days. Shujinko is solid but not enough to crack into the best, and to be honest, that's okay.

The sister and I really wanted to try some ramen while we were in town and we were looking up a few places and found this place opened 24 hours. We went and waited in line for about 20 minutes. They have their own waiting/seating area, which is nice. Service is friendly, but our ramen took awhile to get to us after we ordered. We waited another 30 minutes for our food. It was a full house and super busy. TAKOYAKI- japanese traditional octopus ball with dancing tuna flake on top The takoyaki was very light and soft. I liked that they didn't put a lot of the mayo on it. The tuna flakes added some saltiness to the dish and overall it was really good and not overly creamy. VEGETABLE RAMEN- variety vegetables and mushroom in soy based soup My sister ordered this and the broth was very light, but full of flavor. I really liked the smooth mushroom flavor that came through. It was a very good sweet earthy flavor. I would order this too. BLACK RAMEN- tonkotsu soup base (pork broth) with spicy sauce and special black powder (shellfish and fish mixture), basic vegetable toppings, and grilled pork belly I really like the tonkotsu broth. It wasn't heavy, but was light and very smooth. I like that it wasn't overly salty or fatty. The noodles were perfectly cooked and soft. It retained the flavors of the broth and went well with the pork belly, which was fatty and very flavorful and meaty. Overall, I am in love with this place. I will definitely visit again when I'm in town and I'm sure my sister will be down for another trip too.

Fish base with pork ramen, the BEST

Fish and bacon ramen is something I DREAM about - this place should definitely open a restaurant in Sydney and other cities too!

This is my first time eating here. I had the Shujinko ramen with pork broth, and I gotta say I like the soup base a lot! It's with the right amount of taste. Usually the flavor of Japanese ramen soup base can be a little too salty and strong for me (I always feel like I am food-high after having one). I've also tried their signature gyoza, which was okay, I think I had better ones in other restaurants. I would say overall their food is good but not exceptional. I do recommend this place, their portion is HUGE with reasonable price. (Trust me from the pictures the food doesn't look that big)

Great ramen and open 24hrs a day, how could I not give this 5 stars. The staff is super friendly, the place has great character and the food is awesome. I love their signature Shukinko ramen, perfect comfort food for a cold day. The broth is not overly salty which I really like. You could eat this everyday without sending your blood pressure through the roof. Try the peeled tomatoes with light honey sauce, they are amazingly good. This is a great gem during the day, but having access to food this good after midnight is utterly awesome.

24/7 Ramen in the CBD? Yes please! Being jetlagged as hell coming in from California, I was absolutely starving around 6 am the day after flying in. I'm not a big breakfast person, but I love me some ramen at literally any hour of the day. I was actually scoping out places for lunch, but when I saw this place was already open, I threw on some clothes and ran out the door. Very good decision! This ramen is delicious, with chewy noodles and delicious pork and toppings! I got the spicy version of the tonkatsu and it was perfectly hot - spicy without masking the other flavors. This will be a go-to spot whenever I'm back in Melbs!

Great for vegetarians, and this is hard to say as vegetarian ramen can be hard to find. Miso ramen was great with chili flakes added- yum! Great deal for the ramen as well, very filling. Ingredients were fresh and service was fast! Loved it!

First time eating here and it was amazing. Ordered takowasabi and shujinko ramen. The tako was fresh and got the kick of spice from the wasabi. Decent portion to share for two people. When you first take a sip of the shujinko ramen...that's when you know the flavour is all there. It would say it's my one of favourite Japanese ramen to choose from in Melbourne. I would definitely go back again. Plus, it's 24/7. Big ++++

The food was fine, 3.5 stars, nothing special or memorable but not bad. Maybe it's because I'm from Los Angeles and we have amazing ramen there, but this was just average to me. I got the Shujinko spicy ramen with extra topping. My pet peeve -- the ramen was not served piping hot, just warm. I like my soup nice and hot so that it can warm me from the inside!

    Raul R.

Stopped here for breakfast. The service was attentive and the ramen was available very promptly. Overall an okay experience and nothing special about the place. Though the ramen hit the spot and was a great way to start the day.

I wouldn't say I regretted my choice, but I probably should have taken the advice of one of my friends for a place with sashimi and substantial food. Hidden down a narrow flight of stairs, Izakaya Den is a bit like a den with its cold, yet cozy interior. We didn't end up drinking anything throughout our meal, which I slightly regretted, since that is precisely what you do at an izakaya place. Either way, it was the middle of the day, so we weren't too keen. What we did get were baked scallops with a ginger garnish of some sort. The scallops were a delicious texture, just how scallops how should be, but the highlight was really the garnish on the side! We also went for the tuna tartare, which was alright in texture. Again, the highlight was the sauce. I should have gone for the tuna tataki, which seems to be the more popular dish. We also had the fish of the day (which I can't remember what), and that was really tender and baked perfectly. It wasn't salmon, though that's what it looks kinda like in the picture. The pickled daikon on the side was my favorite part of the dish - but the fish was also really delicious. It wasn't one bit fishy, and the meat just fell apart perfectly! The lamb skewers were also good, though I don't think I would order this again if I returned. They were slightly dry, and didn't taste much like lamb. At the end of our meal, they gave us complimentary house-made marshmallows! They were fluffy, not overly sweet, and quite yummy! Our next visit was Le Petit Gateau, so we didn't go for dessert... Though the food was just average to above-average, the service was really friendly and attentive, and they even hung our coats on a coat rack for us! Truly Japanese. =)

For me, one of those places is Akachochin. I've been here a number of times in the last few of months. Dinners, lunches, a quick snack and glass of sake before heading to other places. Every time I've left feeling happier than when I walked in. Satisfied, but not stuffed. Content. It's open and bright, clean and slick without being too minimalist. The food is presented on beautiful crockery, your chopsticks rest on what looks like a pebble but is actually a beautifully moulded piece of clay. Sake is drunk from pretty glasses that look like something from deep inside the ocean. Before I even eat anything, I already feel better about the world. For the most part the service is unobtrusive, gentle even. I always feel taken care of at Akachochin, which of course is what service is all about but most places don't have the inexplicable magical touch of giving me everything I want and need without making me feel like I've been "worked". Some of the waiters here get it right better than others and I almost feel like I should make my booking especially when I know my favourite, Mason, will be working. (Would that be creepy?) The food? Oh yes, let's get to that shall we? The Hiramasa Namerou (a chopped kingfish tartar) is the stuff that keeps me awake at night. Even after attending a lunch where Chef Kengo Hiromatsu taught me how to make this dish, I still can't quite put my finger on why it tastes so amazing. There's spring onion, wasabi, miso, seasame seeds and other goodness in there... it's such a perfectly balanced dish and texturally rocks my world with the crunch of the accompanying home made rice crackers. This is one of those dishes I could eat multiple times in a week and never tire of, though I suspect the magic ingredient is all about having Kengo prepare it for you. Also on the menu is a very fine selection of sushi and sashimi, and if your'e lucky you can score a seat at the chef's bar and watch the masters at work as they slice your fish, form your nigiri and plate everything in an artful way. It seems a shame to eat the resulting masterpieces. There's grilled items, Udon, slow braised meat dishes and all manner of vegetable items. It's easy to order a few items and then order more as your stomach demands. Come at lunch time and enjoy a $20 bento that is generous and delicious. With multiple choices available, you could be eating Chicken Udon or Grilled Pork or perhaps fried tofu with mountain vegetables. Each bento also comes with some sashimi, rice and pickles. Yes, I have a bit of a soft spot for Akachochin and hope you will too. .
