Teriyaki charsu (pork) ramen noodles in black tonkotsu soup served with sprouts, chives, egg, seaweed, sesame seed and chilli flakes.

This is the best ramen in Australia. Rivalling ones we had in Japan a couple months ago and we went to Tsuta. We had the charsu spicy tonkotsu and the teriyaki charsu black tonkotsu. Amazing bowls of noodles, slightly firm in a rich almost velvety soup, laced with an interesting mix of vegetables including bamboo shoots, sprouts, chives, and seaweed. I think this would be considered more of a 'westernised' ramen. If you already know that one bowl won't be enough eat all your noodles first and save the soup for a second round of noodles for free. I look forward to trying the shoyu and miso soups next. I also had the three sake sampler. I don't remember seeing a warm version as is my preference on a cold day. The service was fantastic and we were seated and served almost immediately although there can be a bit of line as it gets later.

This little gem is hidden in a small arcade of Asian shops. It's modest exterior should not sway you from stopping in. I was warmly greeted by the staff and seated promptly. Immediately I was brought water and my order was taken. The menu is straightforward with just a handful of ramen choices but you have the ability to select your toppings and broth. I'll admit I was expecting to see a larger bowl, having sampled ramen at many other establishments. However, I can assure you that the bowl shape is deceiving, as it is deeper rather than wider. Also, they pack a lot into the charsu bowl with a generous serving of noodles prepared perfectly, along with slices of braised pork, bamboo shoots, two types of seaweed and an egg. The broth was spot on. Just the right amount of salt, perfect consistency and genuine tonkatsu flavour. You will not be disappointed. My only surprise was how empty it was for a weekday lunch. There were other patrons but there was not a queue and this works in the customer's favour. Lastly, upon paying for the bill, the chef asked me how it was and several staff thanked me for coming in. Excellent service and delicious food at a reasonable price. They'll be seeing me again soon.

Small and intimate, this clean and classy place has a great homely vibe.

I've been to Mr. Ramen San a few times now, and each and every time their friendly service wows me. This small and modest store is located in the Mid City Mall, a barren corridor that leads into similar sized Asian restaurants, yet this place is a haven by comparison. It's quiet and intimate setting makes it a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of Bourke St. and the staff are always very helpful and eager to see you. A few vegan options are available when made without the egg, but all in all Mr. Ramen San excels due to its simplicity. There are approximately 10 menu items, nothing fancy, but it's delivered with speed and precision, filled with taste and soul that other ramen places seem to miss. Also you can't beat $6 all day Sapporo's! It may not look like much but Mr. Ramen San feels like coming home after being away for a long time, a place that is sparse yet oozes with character. Delicious food all under $15. I'm not a ramen expert, but this place is my favourite.

Dear Yelpers, thanks for helping me discover a truly drool-worthy ramen restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. I've walked through Mid-City Centre countless times and strangely enough, never noticed the (very Japanese) façade of Mr Ramen. Probably because there are no queues to deal with (low key, I like it!), and it's not one of those places where one can ogle at people awkwardly through the window as they eat. Cool fact: despite its compact interior, they've managed to allow enough space for a laundry basket to be placed on the ground at each table for personal belongings. Ingenious! The one page menu is easy to decipher and covers the essentials, including a couple of vegetarian options. I had the charsu ramen with spicy tonkotsu soup base ($13.90). A seasoned egg came with it and wow it made my day! It had a perfect gooey centre, the stuff dreams are made of! I was caught off guard with the spicyness of the broth, nearly choked at first, but that was a sure sign it was legit spicy!! The noodles and charsu were amaze, and the simplicity of it all brought me back to the traditional, family-run casual eateries of Japan. Slurp your troubles away at Mr Ramen, you won't regret it!

When they say something is spicy, they mean it! It was a struggle to stop my nose from running into the bowl lmao. Really warmed me up during the cold winter night, simple and delicious.

Kyushu style: Tasty, smooth broth and spot on noodles. This just might be my favourite ramen shop. The chashu has also just a bit of burnt edge to contrast w the richness in the stock and gooey egg. Free extra noodles for those who are sumos or can't resist slurping up the rest of the soup. Will be back.

Guys. This is the best char-siu I've ever had in my life. I…read morecould taste the char, the fire on the edges of the pork. It was appropriately fatty, but not all fat, you know? Now it's been over a year since I've had Totto (NYC, my favorite), and my tongue might be spoiled from eating bad ramen at like 5 places in Atlanta. But I am willing to say this was #1. Hakoya opened on the corner of a new "laneway" in the Upper West Side building (Lonsdale and Rose Lane) - it appears to have been open since November. There are 4 tables along the wall, with a bit of privacy from hanging dividers (noren?), as well as about 10 seats along a bar, which faces the kitchen. The menu is tight, as you should expect. I had my regular ramen order, spicy tonkatsu. You can choose your spicy - 1 pepper, 2, or 3. This nearly unnerved me and I had to ask the server for help on my decision. I played it safe and went with 2... I made the right choice. Balancing the two heats (spice and temperature), it's just enough to make you feel like you broke a sweat without actually breaking one. I always forget that the ramen being so hot makes the spice... well, spicier. A cold Sapporo kept me on the non-sweaty side of dinner. Between each seat are the accouterments you may need - soy, sesame, chili oil, garlic paste, pickled ginger - as well as wooden chopsticks (nice touch to match with the wooden spoon), napkins, and water jug and glasses. Easy. Every day there appears to be a happy hour, $4 for Sapporos between 3pm and 6pm. Highly recommend, and since I'm here for 2 weeks, I expect to be back!

For the restroom they told that I have to leave my cellphone to get a key from them!!!! Horrible service. Food was very average. And didn't taste original at all!

There is an ample selection of items: a well stocked sushi takeaway section, a deli counter to choose your own bento and what I came to try, the ramen! There are a few udon and ramen choices: veg, chicken and pork (chasiu). I opted for the pork ramen (@ $12.50) and went upstairs to wait for my order. Less than 10 minutes later my mid-sized bowl of ramen arrived. Happily, all the right elements were in place for a satisfying bowl! A generous portion of egg noodles, several tender slices of pork, a creamy rich broth, bamboo shoots, seaweed, fishcake, green onions and roasted garlic. The serving size was perfect and however filling it was I could not help but to continue to slurp it down. Staff were friendly and attentive and the space was well accommodating. It was clean and well stocked. They cater to the NAB lunch crowd so the professionalism is well matched. Prices are reasonable and I walked away very happy with my meal. I recommend the spot for your next business lunch or casual outing. It is well situated near Southern Cross Station and Etihad Stadium.
