    Tonkatsu Ramen
    Sam O.

Tokyo Table is Glenferrie Road's newest Japanese restaurant and a much welcomed addition to its ramen scene. The decor is great and they have put a lot of work into really ensuring it is a place you're happy to eat at. All the staff are always very friendly and they seem really passionate about the food they are serving, and give complimentary hot tea and edamame upon arrival. Plus all the chinaware is custom made and absolutely stunning. We have been twice now, once on the grand opening and then again tonight. I've had the Tonkatsu Ramen both times and while I enjoyed it the first time I found it to be extremely good tonight, with the broth being very flavoursome and thick and the pork being well cooked. I've also tried the Takoyaki and Tonkatsu Don which I also thought tasted really nice. Plus you can't go past their House Sake which is perfect for any cold winter night! We walk past Tokyo Table every day and were very excited waiting for it to open, so I'm happy to report our excitement was well placed. This has definitely become one of our new favourite locals that you can expect a lot of check-ins from me at :)

Slurrp...best ramen in Melbourne!…read more So, so happy to have finally gotten my ramen fix here at Hakata Gensuke. After hearing this is my brother's favorite ramen spot, I knew I had to come and partake. Located along the many rows of restaurants in Glenferrie, the interior is hip, new, and spacious. There was also seating aplenty. The menu is simple: featuring their signature items as well as a few ramen options including spicy and even non-pork based ramen. Love how you can customize the toppings of your ramen, how al dente you want your noodles cooked, and soup base options of either light or heavy. I had their signature Tonkotsu Ramen ($13) with an added egg ($2 extra). While the portion wasn't very big, it was definitely enough to fill me up. Presentation was very basic - nothing fancy - but taste-wise very satisfying. The broth tasted very light, not oily even when I opted to have the normal option. The noodles were perfectly cooked and the egg was heavenly - I dare say this was the best egg I've ever had in a bowl of ramen! The pork, however, was nothing to brag about - loved the thin slices, but it wasn't very tender. Service was excellent, friendly and accommodating. And I loved the variety of garnishes they have on each table - so addictive! The spicy pickles really add a ton of flavor when mixed in with the ramen. Definitely one of the best ramen experiences I've had and can't wait to try more from their menu.

The menu is creative and provides a good description of the dishes along with photos. There isn't a huge selection but enough to choose from shoyu, tonkatsu, miso or spicy broth along with non-ramen dishes. I went with the Ol' Skool Deluxe, shoyu base which comes with duck slices (very original), an egg, bamboo shoots and a slice of fish cake with green onions. They have a cool imprint on nori too, great for advertising. The broth was light but good, noodles did not taste freshly made but were ok. Duck slices were a bit thick and chewy. It was a decent bowl of ramen but could improve the flavour by providing toppings and seasoning on the table. They did provide a bonito pepper flake that added some flavour. Decor is simple aside from a creepy samurai perched on a stool. They could use a bit more in the bowl and in the shop to bring me back again.

Probably the first thing I noticed after the casual and natural art decor was that Yoku Ono is staffed by all females. It was quite uplifting to see! Having heard about their ramen, I went with the spicy miso with pork belly. With only three to choose from, I hoped they knew what they were doing. They sure did! It was a beautiful presentation in the bowl, with heaps of toppings. Four thick slices of pork belly, half an egg, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and nori. Not to mention all the slightly thicker made noodles. I'm not generally a chicken broth fan but they did well to season it with black sesame oil. I will say there was absolutely no spice. I'm not sure if they just served me with the regular miso ramen in error. It was still a tasty meal! I would return to try the tan tan men or something else from the menu. They have an impressive sake list and bar seating along with upstairs seating for the busier times.

The chicken karaage was enjoyable and well presented. At around $17 the ramen was fine, not in the class of some of the popular ramen joints in the city. I found the broth lacking in the depth of flavour I crave for in a bowl of ramen. The noodles were not to my liking and did not taste hand made. I also found the pieces of pork mostly consisting of fat. If you need ramen on this side of the city, it's the only real choice, personally I'd prefer to frequent some of my favorite ramen businesses in the CBD.

Fun fact: I found this place on my handy dandy Yelp app!…read more Ambiance: One of the only real negatives this spot has is that it's pretty small. Don't come here with a large group or prepare to the disappointed. It's really popular as well, so expect a decent amount of people. I'd say come with 3 people max so you don't have to wait because my group just barely found some stools on the bar-table at the side. Customer Service: Positive! The lady who served us kept smiling and was very friendly. Additionally, I was expecting our food to come out pretty slow because of how crowded it was, but it came pretty fast. I would say 7 minutes approximately, which isn't a bad for a decent, filling meal. Food: Delicious and well-priced! You can get a large bowl of Shoyu Ramen for $10! Pretty good deal if you ask me. I'm also well impressed with their large portions - expect to be full and get the most value out of your meal. I had the Beef Curry, which came with Rice and a large Salad, all of which really hit the spot and comes highly recommended by yours truly! --- Perfect for a quick lunch/dinner. Nothing fancy, but still delicious, enjoyable, and good service to boot!

And then it came in a giant bowl and I thought, here we go! My excitement tapered down after each bite of the tonkatsu ramen. While there were heaps of veggies, one large (albeit tender) pork slice, and half an egg, the amount of noodles were just average, along with the flavour. Pork broth was a bit bland, lacking any sort of pepper or garlic spice. The noodles were definitely not made in-house and when mixed with bean sprouts, actually took away from the serving size. Toppings were an interesting choice, definitely not your traditional Japanese ingredients. Cabbage and button mushrooms although there was plenty of green onion. Just not tasty enough to make a dent. I can see this place being popular in a small town with no other ramen shops, but in a city like Melbourne, it's best to pay a little more and stick with the better establishments if you want a fulfilling dish of ramen.

I loved the pork belly and wished there was more of it! Unfortunately this is where the love ends. Shop Ramen is a small joint with one large communal table, and series of two seater slots along the wall. The hip hop and tunes and easy going atmosphere sets the tone, you are in for a night of Collingwood style shenanigans. Unfortunately for vegans there is only one main dish (vegetarian ramen) and mango and coconut shake. The famous vegetarian buns aren't vegan which is a disappointment considering the huge number of places in the CBD that can serve up vegan options with no problem. The vegetarian ramen is a hot bowl of creamy garlic broth, served with a healthy dose of greens and some seriously tasty mushrooms. Packed into the bowl are Shop Ramen's hand-made noodles, which were absolutely perfect. Throw in some sriracha sauce and some pepper and you have some of the tastiest noodles this side of the city. The service at Shop Ramen was fantastic, with servers quickly seating us and taking our orders. They actually stuffed up the order and only delivered one meal, but to their credit a second meal was delivered in under two minutes. So why three stars? The atmosphere feels "so North," sporting the cool vibe that plagues the streets of the area. And while the ramen was delicious, there was nothing here that absolutely blew me away. Don't get me wrong, I'll be coming back here for more tasty ramen, and you should too. This just isn't the best restaurants of the area.

This time I came in for lunch and was greeted with the same fast service. I tried their signature tonkatsu shio ramen, which was as described as a milky broth with a decent amount of toppings. However the broth could have had a bit more pork taste, not sure how long it is cooked to really draw out the flavour. I was a bit disappointed when enquiring about condiments commonly found on every table in a ramen shop, there was none (chilli oil, pepper, sesame seeds, etc.). They were going to charge $2 for chilli oil. What?! I accepted the togarashi red pepper instead for free. Thankfully the beer I ordered was up to par. Their selection of craft beer is quite uncommon for most ramen shops and is a definite draw here. I still feel it's a decent place for entrees and ramen, especially standing out amongst the long road of Vietnamese shops.
