Unfortunately, everything after that was an extremely unpleasant experience. The biggest problem wasn't the DMV process or the paperwork -- it was the absolutely unacceptable attitude of several employees toward visitors. First, the security guard was extremely difficult to understand. English isn't my first language either, so I would never criticize someone simply for their pronunciation or accent. What I absolutely can criticize, however, is the rude and dismissive way visitors are treated. Then I was called to one of the windows. No hello, no goodbye, no basic courtesy whatsoever. The employee acted as if helping customers was an inconvenience and kept having unrelated conversations with coworkers while dealing with me. It felt completely disrespectful and unprofessional. After completing my exams, I was called to another window, and somehow the experience was exactly the same. Several employees were having a loud conversation about personal matters while customers were waiting to be served. Some were eating at their workstations and casually chatting instead of focusing on the people standing in front of them. I understand that DMV employees deal with hundreds of people and that this is not an easy job. But basic professionalism is not an unreasonable expectation. Say hello. Communicate respectfully. Finish helping the customer before starting a personal conversation with five coworkers. At the very least, act like the person standing in front of you deserves basic respect. I rarely leave reviews like this, but the overall attitude at this location was genuinely awful. The actual DMV process was fine. The customer service and professionalism were not. Management seriously needs to address how visitors are treated at this location.

Lucked out it was not packed nor long lines out the door. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. It's like night and day versus the DMV on W31st Street. The whole layout of this DMV was simple to comprehend which lines to go to and always someone there to answer and assist. After this experience, I will schedule future appointments at this location which is also easily accessible via the MTA subway.

Today I came to renew my license and upgrade to Enhanced. One of my verifying documents was my new Passport card that I sort of regret spending money on. The agent noticed and recommended that I just get the Real ID. But I don't like carrying more than just my license just in case I lose my wallet, I don't lose everything. But what's the point of having the passport book AND card if you're going to leave both at home? So I saved myself $30 and got the Real ID instead and put my passport card in my wallet. Good looking out, agent. The only thing I wished worked was the online check-in. I tried two different browsers and checked my location settings and couldn't get it to work. But the lady at the front was doing a good job of directing everyone who came in quickly. I waited about 30 mins before being seen and had my transaction completed in about 5 mins. The days of spending hours at the DMV are gone. I think the main reason for that is the online screening process for documents. Getting confirmation that you have all the necessary documentation ahead of time streamlines the whole process greatly. The office is easy to get to from the 1, 4, & 5 trains. It's also accessible though I don't think the door is one of those automatic ones. It's a good office that isn't too crowded mid-day. I'll probably come back to this one again.

The facilities are very clean and well-kept. The employees are prompt and to the point - the female Latina receptionist is excellent. But, as always, this DMV has a few downsides: They stopped processing licenses and IDs - you have to go all the way down to Bayone or elsewhere for those. Lines often get wickedly long, even at the reception desk. Most employees aren't as nice as the receptionist, but they aren't obnoxious and helpful. You do need to book an appointment for most services, which helps with the wait time. There is no parking lot - only limited street parking and private lots nearby. Finally, during my last visits, I received some conflicting information. When inquiring about handicap plates, one receptionist said I need the handicap plate registration as well as a replacement plate registration. This isn't what the first receptionist told me and doesn't align with anything I found online. Overall, if you need to get registration, title, or plates, given its convenience and efficient staff, I'd recommend this DMV over most others.

Unfortunately the MVC locations closer to me either had no appointments or don't offer the services I need. Booking an appointment through the MVC website is pretty straightforward and you get confirmation right away. Once you get to the MVC you fall in line and check-in. They look your name up on the list and see when your appointment is. So really your appointment is just to allow you to check-in and not really for receiving service. Once they verify your documents they give you a ticket and you wait for your number to be called. It'll also tell you which window to go to. I didn't quite understand how the number system worked because at one time the same number was on the board 3 different times. All that said, the process was pretty efficient and I was out of the MVC within the hour. The employees I encountered were friendly and helpful.

I know it's a long-standing stereotype that DMVs are miserable, soul-sucking places, but out of all the DMVs I've ever been to, the Harlem location has to be the embodiment of torment and pain. When I got there, there was someone getting arrested at the door for berating a DMV employee, and after dealing with said employees, I can empathize with the person being arrested. Again, I get that DMV employees have an extremely difficult and stressful job, but it certainly doesn't help that their apathetic, unhelpful, rude, and generally sour attitudes contribute to how they're treated by clients. Everyone at the DMV seems like they're being forced to work here, which I'm sure probably isn't their dream job either. Next (and this is a warning for others and a criticism of the DMV process itself), the pre-screening online does literally nothing - having an appointment was pointless since people who arrived without one got seen even earlier than I did. I waited in line, checked-in early, and filled out the paperwork in person (which is required regardless of pre-screen, so make sure you've got a pen as they don't provide any at the DMV), and I still needed to wait 20 minutes. Oh yeah, and make sure to check your phone and not the screens there because my number was called multiple times via text, and never showed on screens. Then, even though I brought all my pre-screen materials physically there, I was still denied due to errors with those materials, despite all of those same materials already approved by the pre-screen. I was told to come back again, which was frustrating considering I live nearly an hour away. Ironically, after I asked what the point of the pre-screen was, the disgruntled DMV employee informed me it was to ensure all my materials were correct, although it seems the online DMV and the in-person DMV have two different qualifications. Bring at least 3 of the required forms of ID just in case, and be prepared to wait a while regardless of what you do. And don't expect the employees to answer any questions. They've got no time for you. Stay far far away. Even though this DMV was the closest to me, I'd have much rather gone to a further DMV and saved myself multiple trips and a huge headache had I known what an awful place this is. If there is a hell, it's the Harlem DMV.

I had earliest appointment and was in and out in 25 minutes. For 7:30 appointments, you only have one entrance (Ft Greene st). This entrance takes you right to the DMV. They make you line up all the way down the street. The online check in doesn't work because you are too "far away" if you are in that line. They don't let you in at all until 7:30. Later you can go in and 625 entrance. Red line for appointments. Have your bar code ready. It's sensory overload in there. I found the employees at the window to be nice and efficient. My husband didn't have that experience. I think they hate everyone by 8:30. My wife and I did not get called until 1:40 pm. The service at the window was ridiculous. Every piece of paper was scrutinized and then the clerk had to stair at her computer screen for an interminably long time. The clerk was devoid of people skills and seemed exasperated that we didn't understand the process. Several times, she got up and went to a desk behind her to talk with someone, giving us no explanation. Was she seeking clarification on an issue, getting permission to do something not normally allowed, or something else? We'll never know. We learned not to ask questions because it threw her off completely. It was an exhausting process. At the end, she did tell us what we had to do next, so I will give her props for that. But why did it take so long? Was it her, or office rules, or a combination of both? Totally drained, we didn't get out of there until around 4pm. If you have an appointment to go to this office, do some deep meditation and relaxation exercises before you go. Ommmmmmmmm.
