Much to my surprise, this fine albeit small branch is located within a very good visitors center, which also includes a museum/information on "Spaceport America", most closely identified with Sir Richard Branson & space tourism. Both the library and the visitors center were very capably handled by two extremely knowledgeable women, each dedicated to bringing the best information & services to any curious individuals who enter. Besides a plethora of printed documents in all forms from newspapers to postcards to maps to fliers, she answered all my queries pertaining to this area, notably "Why would any traveler a hundred years and more before venture away from the reliable freshwater source of the exotic Rio Grande/Rio Bravo by veering Northeast through the forbidding/water-less "Jornada Del Mureto" ("Journey of Death")? [To avoid the inevitable/agonizing pre-(motor)vehicle route over a very rough but relatively "flat" route.] My wife & I walked further inside, to the "Spaceport America" information/museum, stopping briefly to observe an appealing hands-on display/command module for children. Far more interesting were hands-on displays concerning gyroscope effects and keeping your balance/center-of-gravity, both very challenging for astronauts, much less for us non-astronauts!

I was also happy to hear that they do sell their books online through Biblio and eBay as well (under Xochi's) Though most of the books are non-fiction, there are beautiful collectibles in wonderfully bound and printed hard copies. In the front by the door is the most beautiful selection of fiction, I'm so happy I stopped in and picked up this golden-edged hardcopy of The Tale of Two Cities! Stan is a wonderful human for donating books to the community and providing wonderful selections of free books outside his store at any given point for the local adults and children. Brett is a great local to chat with and was very helpful in trying to help me locate the books that I was searching for. He was very interesting and fun to chat with while perusing the front of the bookstore maze!

A scruffy bearded man, was just so rude, we will never We drove my 90 year old mother to town so she could go to this book store. We arrived at 10:45 AM, and the guy announced he was closing shortly. I explained we just wanted to buy a book, we would be quick. He told us to go to the other book store in town. There isn't any other book store in town that was open. He yells, "the thrift store!" If you don't want customers, don't have a retail store with an open sign!!!

The library is very well cared for. It is clean, well organized and pretty well stocked. They have books, DVDs, tapes, etc. It's a very traditional library, so it was very nostalgic going in there. It's very good for kids - they have a really big kids' section of books as well as an art corner. Here, kids can use crayons on large wall-mounted sheets of paper to create their own art. They even have a separate area just for the teenagers. We like it here.

I am not new to Las Cruces, but it's the first time that I have visited the university's Zuhl Library. I want to express how helpful the staff at this library was. I called the library and came in and had more questions and both times I was answered clearly and concisely about what I was asking about. I was impressed with their selection of Japanese language culture, for having relatively small amount of Japanese courses offered here. But I think what sold me on this library was the ambiance of the library, specially the 3rd floor. Lots of space, big sky lights and I loved the southwestern art found on the first floor. I want those giant marble balls near the elevators ... so cool. I will be coming here as much as I can, this summer ; )

Crossing the tracks, I was extremely disappointed that "free" WiFi was not available virtually anywhere here. However, dynamic David, Curator of the local museum, informed me that the public library has free WiFi. Good thing it was during the workweek (I was biketouring 28-31AUG2019, and VERY GLAD to not have to share extremely congested roads during the annual Chile Festival every Labor Day 24 hours later!), when both the library and the outstanding museum were open. I pedaled back to the beautiful library, going inside to meet dynamic director Alice/her staff, who only asked that I apply for a library card to receive the password. Like the incredible public libraries in Texas, access to WiFi increases contact to the World, as well as the immediate area. [As an aside, the very amiable Alice mentioned her daughter playing a volleyball game at ChaparralNM; I replied good wishes for her daughter, that I had pedaled by the relatively new school the day before whilst going over Anthony Gap.] Alice also commented that many bicyclists stop here (the library) strictly for the WiFi access--just like me! In fact, I spent most of he night sitting on the front steps, utilizing their truly free WiFi! Interestingly, I noted that many locals will motor into the parking lot & stop, also accessing this wonderful service. Alice/her staff/Hatch Public Library certainly have my coveted "Wheel of Approval!"

Las Cruces, New Mexico is one of my favorite places to drive through or stop when I'm road…read moretripping. It's a small, humble city that doesn't try too hard but still delivers... big time. There's this laid back, slightly hippie vibe mixed with deep cultural roots, and somehow it all works. You'll find local art, quirky spots, and seriously good eats tucked into the most unassuming corners. Fun fact: this area has been home to Indigenous communities for thousands of years, with evidence of human life here going back about 23,000 years, which makes grabbing tacos feel a little more historic than usual. Add in the Organ Mountains in the background, chile on basically everything, and that slow desert pace... and yeah, I get it. Las Cruces is low key, a little crunchy, and full of gems if you're willing to wander.

Such a beautiful small town with beautiful Mountain Views, hot weather in the middle of December, White Yuccas and cactuses of course! Friendly, warm and inviting locals. Lots of small businesses that aren't found on Yelp are located here and it is referred by Word of mouth. Lots of great restaurants, parking, distances to drive and walk are reasonable. Such a clean city too!
