It was a silver mining town back in the heyday. The BLM has fixed at the schoolhouse,and the church. Some of these buildings are too far gone. There is a donation box in front of the school house to help with the restoration of what they can. There is little trails leading to areas you can go and information signs to tell you about that area. In 2009 the railroad building blew down due to the 90 mile an hour winds. The caretaker who lives on site his name is Dan. He is a very informative guy. My 17 year old son really enjoyed our trip. Being that the name is lake Valley my son was expecting there to be a lake there. There is no water around. After you're done having fun in lake Valley drive over to hatch New Mexico that is only 30 minutes away. Make sure you stop at sparky's in hatch and get their number one green chile cheeseburger.

It has a minimum of maintenance to barely keep it alive. That said, if you can schedule yourself to come on Bayard Days in September you are in for a real treat. The historical society puts on an annual event that really brings all the history to life. They bring n school children by the bus loads and have costumed actors telling about the events of the time when the Fort was in use. I was there for this last year and I believe this recreation of history is a wonderful model that is an example for other historical societies to follow. There is a walking tour with signs about the yard for you to follow anytime. There is a one building museum that is open on Bayard Days. Call the Historical society for details and tours.

The plaza is located right across from the Basilica of San Albino and is surrounded by numerous boutique shops and restaurants. Mesilla isn't very big, so you can definitely see the whole historic area in a short amount of time. The plaza is somewhat plain, but it is highlighted by a gazebo displaying the US and Mexico flags, as well as benches to sit on to take in the sights. While the plaza isn't worth seeing specifically, it is one of the reasons why Mesilla is worth visiting.

One of the nice things is that it's a convenient stop. It's right off of I-10 and it's at a rest stop. We parked our car and then made our way to check out this work of art. And boy is it cool! The sculpture is made out of recycled material, no surprises there, like sneakers and tires. It's quite impressive in sign and overlooks the highway with the mountains in the background. Take a few moments, appreciate the art, snap a photo or two, and then you're on your way. A must visit in Las Cruces!

This review is for Pine Tree Trail which was a ~4.2 miles round trip that took ~2.5 hours to…read morecomplete. Pine Tree Trail was located 45 minutes away from White Sands National Park. This was on the way back to Las Cruces which was a good stop for a second hike. This hike was done counterclockwise; trail was a narrow path of dirt and rock with plenty of inclines! I came here on a whim to explore the mountains close up. This is a fee area of $5 per car, but if…read moreyou have an annual National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass it's a participating site. You can either show the person in the visitor center to get a receipt or display it in your car on the dash or hangtag. The person in the visitor center was helpful. The park closes at sunset (with the chance of fees if you don't leave by then) and so there's a whiteboard with the exact time you need to leave. There are a bunch of trail maps and the maps that prohibit dogs are also clearly marked. The worker recommended the La Cueva trail as there wasn't enough time for us to do the trail originally planned and gave us the back story behind it. He seemed very knowledgeable! There are gorgeous views and the trails seemed well maintained with gravel/dirt.
