These guys increase your premium practically every year. I have only needed to use the insurance twice (fortunately), but predictably, they raise your premium if you use it. I could pay less with a new insurance company, but if I switch, my dog can no longer get treatment covered for the only thing I've needed to use the insurance for (because it's now a pre-existing condition). One of our dogs died from old age, but because of the increasing premiums, I am now paying the same for one dog that I previously paid to insure two. Originally signed up in a state that had NO rehab centers so I did not choose this option when enrolling any of my pets. I just recently moved from one state to another.. I called them to change my address and I was surprised to learn that because I moved to a new state they have increased my monthly premiums to $473.08 per month. Wow! Ok. Why? "Well because prices for vets in your new state are more expensive." NOT TRUE.. in fact the opposite is true. Cheaper in my new state than old state. "Well, it's also because we factor in how many other claims we get from that area." So I'm being charged more because of other people??? None of it makes sense. Dog (small breed, mutt, neutered) ate... something bad. Got stuck in his stomach/upper intestine. This required a surgery and hospitalization costing several thousand dollars. Trupanion paid out same day (to the vet, actually) for exactly what they said they would (in our case 90% after $1k deductible). ER vet then refunded what I had put down before the surgery. I am updating my review of Trupanion, having received this little message from them yesterday: "To ensure that Frankie always has access to the best veterinary care possible, we'll be changing Frankie's monthly cost from $184.11 to $237.81 starting on December 19, 2025." Two hundred and thirty seven dollars and eighty one cents monthly for this: our plan does NOT include any exam fees (even at an emergency hospital); it does NOT include any preventative care such as shots or wellness care; we must pay $500 per incident (not yearly). Now that our beloved dog is 14 (he was enrolled as a puppy), there is nothing Trupanion would love more than for us to balk at the constant fee hikes and drop the program. Today I cancelled my pet insurance policy with TRUPANION. I have been paying monthly premiums for my northern breed dog since he was a puppy. He is now almost 17. Disappointing Experience - Daylight Robbery I would not recommend Trupanion--or any pet insurance, for that matter. My decision to discontinue with them is based on three main reasons. I hope this review is helpful to you and saves you some money. First, after doing the math, it's clear that setting aside savings from an early age is often a smarter financial move. They may promote coverage (aka guilt trip you) that pet insurance works for "chronic conditions" but don't be fooled. Insurance underwriting turns the risk they play into a casino and the house always wins. Second, insurance companies are in the business of minimizing payouts, and Trupanion is no exception. They tout a list of different services that are covered. They are deliberately and carefully written in a way to make you assume certain services are covered when they are not. In practice, they find every loophole to avoid reimbursing you. In my case, I paid $200/month for two dogs (up from $140 the year before), each with a $1,000 deductible. When one of my dogs had an emergency visit costing ~$1,450, I expected some relief. Instead, I received just ~$90. Why? Trupanion doesn't cover exam fees--even in emergencies--and calculates the deductible before applying the 90% reimbursement rate, which drastically reduces your payout. This feels deceptive and unfair. Thirdly, premiums increase significantly over time, far beyond normal inflation (grew from $158 to $202 in six months). They might say it doesn't. I believed them. But it does. Ironically, I'm glad they didn't pay more and were so obvious in the deceptions--because it made me cancel the policy and stop wasting money. Save yourself the frustration and consider building your own pet emergency fund instead. Lastly, I want to end with the rule of thumb I generally use for insurance and maybe that will be helpful to you as well. If you can afford to cover the worst outcome (not that you will be happy about it but that you dont have to sell a kidney or something excessive to cover it) then do not get insurance. For most people this means things like concert ticket insurance, flight insurance etc (minor caveat being if you don't trust the product like a motorized recliner, they always break why do we buy them?). For most people things like home insurance, car insurance, medical aid etc. is a must because we just don't have that cash around. That being said, even if you think you cant afford a $10-20k pet bill, I hate to break it to you but you will have to pay it at the vet anyway until Trupanion reimburses you. read more
