Edited to give people the exact amount they are making me pay now for one dog: My premium will go up from $133 to a whopping $164 a month for ONE dog. These guys increase your premium practically every year. I have only needed to use the insurance twice (fortunately), but predictably, they raise your premium if you use it. I could pay less with a new insurance company, but if I switch, my dog can no longer get treatment covered for the only thing I've needed to use the insurance for (because it's now a pre-existing condition). One of our dogs died from old age, but because of the increasing premiums, I am now paying the same for one dog that I previously paid to insure two. The only thing that I could say that is good about Trupanion is that the associates they hire are typically pretty nice and understanding. I'm sure they don't have any control over the premium increases and it's the CEO who is already wealthy who will continue to profit. He doesn't care how we feel about the premium increase.

    Price hikes.

They deny everything based on geralizatjons and diagnosis from themselves and not what doctors say. My dog had a puppy scratch on her belly and they said it was allegies even though my vet didn't. Then they proceeded to deny anything she has ever had because it shares potential symptoms with allergies. Then there is the "we don't raise prices based on age or claims" but then they will go and raise it every single year. I have had my dog for 5 years and each year it has gone up 20-40 %. It started at $75. Now it is up to 170 a month. This company is a scam. Avoid at all costs.

Neither of my two dachshunds have any pre-existing conditions and get annual exams and dentals. Do you think I will have problems with claims? How do you submit documentation to the company?

You will absolutely have issues with claims and customer service with trupanion. I have had 0 claims without issues, and in each case, the "appeals department" ends up sending additional payments but only after weeks of review. The way trupanion… Read more

If my pet has Trupanion and a year later gets a urinary tract infection, it heals, but then even a year later from that develops kidney disease, is Trupanion going to say the kidney disease is related to the UTI? Will Trupanion cover it?

Yes they will say your pet had a pre existing condition. They will say that the uti in the past is a symptom of kidney disease. I do not agree with this but am now finding out after having Trupanion for 6 years and trying to use it for the first… Read more

My dog had puppy strangles when he was younger (prior to being insured). Puppy strangles is related to weak immune system and he had to be on steroids. If he gets cancer (weak immune) would he still be covered? The disease is different?

Roxy, unfortunately passed away last month but lived a good long life; almost 16.5 years; unusual for a large breed; due to excellent (human grade) food, supplements, Vet care and lots of love. I signed up with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance (HP) soon after adopting Roxy in 2013. At the time HP had reasonable insurance rates and was a relatively small company in Belleview WA. In 2013 I was paying a rate of $36.79 per month for coverage. Over the years the insurance premiums skyrocketed. By the time I cancelled the policy last month the premium had increased to $564.48 per month. My experience with HP's was mostly positive during the early years. Please be warned, however, Healthy Paws does not cover anything that has to do with "Wellness", preventative or of an "exam" nature. It seems to be highly counterintuitive that they would cover a more serious (and more expensive disease/ailment) than possibly preventing it in the first place with a wellness exam. I just don't get it. As time went on the premiums increased tremendously. There, apparently, is no cap for the increases that HP's hits its customers with. And they know that as the pet gets older you are stuck with them; you are uninsurable with anyone else and you need the insurance because you have a senior pet that might need the reimbursements (for medical care) that older dogs might typically require. During the last month of her life, as her arthritis, had become quite severe, the Vet prescribed a strong arthritis medication, requiring injections at the Vet. These were initially on a schedule of 2 times per week for approximately one month; and then once a week for the next month. Unfortunately, Roxy didn't survive past the first month or so. HPs was reimbursing me for the injection visits (under $50 per visit) for the first 4 visits and the last visit; but they rejected the claim for the 5th visit. Requiring claim to be reviewed by a review board. I addressed this after my dogs passing. Several emails and phone calls took place between me and HPs customer service and claims dept. HP's claims manager even stated that HPs did cover the injections (and that it was a covered item) yet they still required a board to review the claims. Multiple emails, phone calls and a board to review a claim that HPs deemed to be a covered claim but then to hold off on paying one $40 claim? Seriously.? I even received an email after my dog's passing (the policy was already canceled at that time because my dog had passed) from the claims manager saying Hello and hopefully you and your dog are doing well!!! It is extremely disheartening and unacceptable the total lack of empathy and compassion Healthy Paws shows to pet parents especially after their beloved pet has passed. It is quite apparent that the only thing Healthy Paws cares about is money. Below is a timeline/listing of the premiums charged by Healthy Paws to me to cover my dog. Please note that my dog never had anything major done: no major surgeries, no cancer; only, mostly non-invasive office-visit medical treatments. Oct 2013: $36.79 per month 2015: $42.67 per month 2017: $53.91 per month 2019: $73.43 per month 2020: $110.14 per month 2021: $165.21 2022: $311.31 2023: $207.47 (move to Texas) 2023 (Oct - anniversary date): $259.29 per month 2024: $359.85 per month 2025: $564.48 per month I do not recommend Healthy Paws; in general dealing with Healthy Paws has been an extremely frustrating, disappointing and expensive experience. You would be wise to stay as far away from Healthy Paws as possible!

On April 16, 2025, this clinic wrote a prescription for regular Simparica (flea & tick only -- NOT Simparica Trio). When I attempted to fill that prescription through Amazon, the clinic refused to approve it and informed me I would need to pay $29.99 again simply because I chose to purchase the medication outside of their office. I was later told the prescription had expired on July 1, 2025, meaning the prescription was only considered valid for about two and a half months -- something that was never clearly explained upfront. There was no medical issue, no exam required, no lapse in care, and no change in my dog's health. This was purely an administrative barrier tied to where I chose to buy the medication. To be clear: This clinic was not dispensing the medication, yet still demanded a $29.99 fee to "reissue" or approve a prescription that had already been written. This feels less like patient care and more like a paywall designed to discourage clients from using outside pharmacies. I understand veterinary clinics are businesses -- but refusing to approve valid prescriptions unless clients pay extra fees is unethical, misleading, and erodes trust. Many veterinary offices do not operate this way. If you plan to use Amazon, Chewy, or any online pharmacy, be aware that this clinic may deny prescription approvals and charge additional fees unless you buy directly from them. After this experience, I will be taking my business elsewhere.
