Today, Saturday August 6th, 2022, I decided to get a trim in my neighborhood. (EDIT: I'm now in Chicago, have to change my profile.) I walked into the Truefitt & Hill Barber Shop around 9:50am for the first time thinking I would be welcomed. I was greeted after a few minutes and told someone would be there to help me momentarily. All nice, normal interactions. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a woman hair stylist. I know this salon caters to men, but I had recently chopped off all my long hair (in the Google photo, that's a picture of me with long hair) at The Chicago Men's Salon and had a fantastic experience. When I was finally helped, I was told "We don't cut women's hair here." I even stated, are you sure? This is a "boy" cut and I had it done at a "men's salon," it wouldn't take that much to cut. Hair is hair and money is money, right? Well I left that salon feeling really low and sad. My fellow humans, it's really sad that in 2022 racist behavior is on full display. I went home, did some internet research and talked to an attorney friend and discovered under federal law it is illegal for businesses to discriminate against women. Since there was a woman stylist employed there, I'm thinking they don't cut BLACK women's hair. My hair is mixed curly 3B texture and I don't necessarily frequent salons or barbers in Black neighborhoods because I live far away and the neighborhood I live in has more amenities and things to do. (It's really sad that Chicago is so segregated that I had to even type "Black" neighborhoods.) Anyways, just thought you should know. If racism and/or sexism is something you're cool with, continue to spend money at this establishment. I'm taking my wealth elsewhere. EDIT: It is 11:56am and I spoke to the manager Joey on the phone. He was very apologetic and I appreciate that. He explained that his stylists weren't trained in cutting women's hair and turning away women was their policy since they had had negative experiences in the past with women who were unhappy with their cut. I LITERALLY JUST WANTED A TRIM I could get at a Supercuts (if one was in this neighborhood). He said this was the oldest salon in the world, and I'm like then they should know how to TRIM a cut that was already a gentleman's hair style. And, if turning away paying female customers is their policy, then they should be glad no one has sued them for discrimination. I'm still upset and will never return. EDIT 2: Someone named Ashleigh posted a glowing Google review that says they've been getting haircuts here for the past 3 years. Ashleigh is a woman's name. Update: the owner did call us and offer a free haircut to make amends, but we declined since another cut from this location was the last thing we wanted. Joe was a delight. I am nearly 50 years old and this was the best shave and a haircut I have ever had. The barbers have been well trained in etiquette and demeanor. Very respectful. If you to have a chat, they join with pleasure. If you want to be still and quiet, they sense that too and accommodate. A wonderfully tidy, bright, and posh ambience. Based on the reviews this looks like a good place to get a haircut, but if you are shopping for Truefitt products, I think this place has many many shortcomings. Total s**t show actually. Better to shop on Amazon. First, it was very hard to find. The address is listed as 111 E Monroe on Google and Yelp. Hey, that's an office building. (Yelp says it is off of Michigan Ave which is totally wrong). So I had to wander around in the building lobby. A guard directed me to make several rights and lefts, whereupon I saw a sign for "shoe shines". Hmmmm. That was it....although the back entrance through the shaving stalls. There is a proper shop entrance on Clark. I came to buy their world-famous shaving cream. Too bad the shop wasn't up to standard. The shop itself is poorly organized and looked messy. Two employees chatted amongst themselves while I looked around. On one side of the store, products are displayed on shelves but not labeled or organized in any way that I could understand. The other side of the store had more products, but access was blocked by a reservation desk so it wasn't easy to see. In addition, they had no samples available to try some of the different products at home. Truefitt makes some of the best products. Someday their Chicago retail store may catch up. read more

Love this barber shop. When you step inside, you literally teleport back to the 1920's. The barbers are all first class and well worth the premium over State Street Barbers or Old Town Barbershop. My only issue, and the reason it's getting 3 stars, is because you have to have a MindBody and Facebook account to book an appointment online, which never works and is a giant pain. Even though the barbers are fantastic, I usually just go to Old Town Barber because I don't want to deal with the hassle. Truly a classy feel to this barber shop in the loop. Saw previous reviews about it being hard to find which is not the case at all, as it sits on clark just south of Monroe, you can't miss it. I'm really not a huge review person, but felt the need to give my barber Edwin some love on here. I recently relocated to Chicago from Dallas, where I had the same stylist for two years. Never thought I would get someone who could do just as good of a job, but I was quickly proven wrong. Edwin listened to the kind of cut I always got in the past, executed on that, and made it even better. My hair grows back fast, and there have been times in the past where I've received cuts and I'd be due for a cut in as little as 10 days sometimes. When you come here, yes, you will pay more, but it is truly a place where you get what you pay for, and I only have to get my hair cut once a month now. If you want quality, good customer service, work in the loop, and like getting a cut just once a month, then I highly recommend coming here. Ask for Edwin! read more

When I moved to Chicago I did a ton of research on where to go. My research led me to this shop, and at first sight I was very pleased. It's a high quality shop where everyone takes care of you. I got Mason, and I have never considered switching. Not only is he a very fun and friendly guy, but most importantly, he rocks your cut! I can give Mason the exact look I want and he'll nail it, but I also feel comfortable giving him the autonomy to make me look good (which takes a lot). If only I could rate this 6 stars. I didn't think it could get better than before. IT DID. WHAT?! YEAH. I originally messaged the owner, Rick about an appointment, he responded and got me booked. I then found out I may not be able to make it so I messaged him and he said it was no problem and I ended up calling the next morning and they got me in regardless. CLASSY. I asked for Claudio (he was the B E S T), who was my previous favorite Barber at T&H, I was told he moved away, I was heartbroken but soldiered on stating that I did not have a preference for the new barber. JUST MY LUCK I GOT DAVID. Claudio was fantastic but David is AMAZING. He is THE barber. He listened to exactly what I wanted and cut it perfectly to what I imagined which is seriously one of the most difficult things to come by for any man when he gets a haircut, at least in my experiences. David gave me tips and advice on how to keep my hair from getting overly poofy and tangly (I usually have unkempt wavy hair) and told me how to keep it more inline and professional. MUCH APPRECIATED. He kept the front exactly how i wanted only slightly trimming the dead ends and cleaned up the lower sides and back just as I asked and wanted. EXCELLENT. On top of that, he's into cars (MEGA BONUS POINTS) and we chit chatted about BMWs, Mercs and a whole buncha other stuff. I found my new favorite barber. First, I want to know I am getting the same haircut visit after visit then I want to be able to trust the person who is cutting my hair. Not only to they do a phenomenal job providing the best customer service possible, they truly care about the service they are offering to you. I have been going to Truefitt and Hill for over a year now and I hope to continue to do so in the years to come. I have had a consistent haircut performed by the same barber whom I trust fully to ensure my haircut will look the best as possible. I have not had a negative reaction to any service performed by the barbers at Truefitt and Hill as I have had in the past at male hair salons. When you first enter the shop, it is clean and well maintained. The manager takes pride in a well organized and clean shop as well as customer satisfaction. This shows the dedication the manger has to the craft and the business. Each barber is professional and well trained. I have not encountered a single barber at Truefitt and Hill which seems to be lacking in their craft. The receptionist is both helpful and attentive. I have had haircuts, beard trims, and hot lather shaves at Truefitt and Hill, each have been satisfactory. Especially the hot lather shaves! There is something about lying back in a barber chair then putting full trust in the barber who is using a straight razor to shave your face. The hot lather shave at Truefitt and Hill is done very well. From the hot towels to the lime shave oil to the actual shave, the whole process is somewhat magical. I highly recommend it to anyone, at least try it once. The barbers who perform the hot lather shaves perform excellent shaves. I feel confident they will only get better as the owner of this Truefitt and Hill is, himself, an artful master at shaving. I feel compelled to post this as I had probably the worst haircuts I have ever gotten for $60($50 plus $10tip). Yes, the price is a big part of this and the haircut was not good. I go to a barber because I travel a lot and rarely get a chance to go to the same place twice in a row. I have very specific instructions which I´ve learned and 95% of the time they get it perfect. The other 5% are very close. This guy was not even in the ballpark. The taper was not well done, the hair was uneven, the shape of it was really bad, and he did not shave my neck. Now 2 1/2 weeks later I´m getting another haircut because it looks terrible and lots of product can´t even save it. I don´t fault the guy for the bad haircut(He got his tip) but the place that hired him and charges $50. He's nowhere near the standard for a place that charges that. As I left he said to come back because I GET BETTER. I want you to be good, not get better. I have visited the original Truefitt & Hill in London a number of times so I was excited when I saw there was one in Chicago too. This is a truly outstanding barber shop - every part of the customer service experience is fantastic. It's easy to book appointments, the staff are very welcoming and the quality of the haircut is always high. It's a cool location, traditional decor, soothing music and nice array of products too. My regular barber is Claudio, he is phenomenal. He remembers his clients and is always so professional and meticulous. At previous barbers in Chicago, I have had to constantly guide the barber to do what I want. With Claudio, I just sit back and let a professional take over. Aida has been my hair stylist for a long time. She is fantastic! I've tried almost every barber in the Loop, and she is by far the best. She is careful and thoughtful.
