I had an emergency with a full body rash that I'd never experienced before and I needed an appointment asap. I was nervous seeing the PA because I wasn't sure what that meant and if I would get the medical expertise I might need... I was in a lot of pain, I hadn't slept, it's a pandemic, I had to travel further from my home than anticipated... clearly a recipe for disaster. Imagine my surprise when I was met with exceptional customer service, a relaxing but covid safe environment, relatively easy access from the subway, and a place my insurance approves of! Most importantly, Nicolle and her assistant were AMAZING. Being delirious from pain and lack of sleep, I spent hours googling what could be wrong with me and had all sorts of questions. These women were nurturing, kind, sympathetic, and knowledgeable. Everyone I interacted with gave me a little extra time so I didn't feel rushed. And the medical plan has worked wonders. To be honest, I thought my rash was a food allergy but Nicolle gently pushed me to consider life style changes that might have given me a contact allergy. Once my body felt better from her medical treatment plan, I realized she was exactly right and have since discovered the culprit. Please consider this group for your medical needs, not just cosmetic. It may seem counterintuitive that a place with such high budget marketing can offer a small town, personal medical experience... but I assure you that is exactly the kind of care I needed and received. Thanks for healing my skin pain! I am so grateful.

Here's why: Last Tuesday, I called Flatiron Dermatology and spoke to a courteous representative who scheduled me for an appointment the following Thursday. Everything seemed fine--until the flood of disjointed communications began. First, I received an automated email (sent via PatientFusion.com, not Flatiron Dermatology) confirming the appointment. Then came an SMS from an unfamiliar sender labeled "Kathleen MDPC," which initially seemed like a scam. Over the next few days, I was bombarded with reminders about a $75 no-show fee and a 4% processing fee for non-cash payments almost double of Amex Visa Master charges venders, given that standard card processing fees are far lower about 1.4 to 2.4%. I confirmed my appointment via text, assuming that would suffice. But the clinic wasn't done. Another SMS arrived, followed by an email directing me to a poorly designed Uptox.com portal to input my medical history. The site looked unprofessional,  i am skeptical to submit my record there and the process was needlessly convoluted. Worse, when I received yet another email--this time demanding I "confirm" again via a no-reply address I realized their system was as disorganized as it was invasive. Frustrated, I attempted to provide constructive feedback, only to discover there was no direct way to contact the clinic. Every email I'd received was from an unmonitored bot, and their website offered no clear "Contact Us" option. After some digging, I managed to send my concerns--only to receive a dismissive reply explaining their processes (without apology) before abruptly canceling my appointment, suggesting I find a practice "more aligned with my expectations." The sheer lack of accountability was astounding. I wasn't asking for a "state-of-the-art" experience but at minimum just a coherent, patient-friendly process. Instead, I encountered layers of unnecessary communication mostly about panalty of no show and defensiveness when criticized. Medical expertise doesn't excuse administrative incompetence, and a little humility. Maybe somewhere on the line to show some care and ask for the purpose of my visit, after all i am just a patient looking for help but instead all the messages had taught me if I ghost them I will be paying and their detail of their payment system is 4%.

My first impression of the office was positive. The check-in process was quick, and the office…read moreitself was clean and welcoming. Unfortunately, that's where my positive experience ended. For my initial appointment, I waited about an hour in the exam room before the dermatologist came in. Once she arrived, the visit felt extremely rushed. A lot of information was presented very quickly, along with instructions for multiple medications and products, and I never felt like there was enough time to ask questions or fully understand the treatment plan. It seemed as though the office was running behind and trying to make up time by moving through appointments as quickly as possible. I assumed it was just an unusually busy day. The following day, I called my pharmacy to check on my prescription and was told they had not received anything from the dermatologist's office. I called the office, and I was told the prescription had already been sent. Within minutes of that phone call, I received a text notification that a prescription had been transmitted to my pharmacy, and the pharmacist called me less than an hour later to let me know it was ready for pickup. I can't say exactly what happened, but the timing left me questioning whether the prescription had actually been sent before I called. The final issue was what ultimately convinced me not to return. About two and a half days before my follow-up appointment, I received a reminder text and immediately called to cancel because I knew I couldn't make it. The office has a $50 cancellation fee for cancellations made within 48 hours, so I wanted to make sure I called in time. No one answered, so I left a voicemail. When I hadn't heard back by the next day, I called again and left another voicemail. Still no response. On the day of my appointment, I called a third time and finally reached someone, who told me they had not listened to either voicemail and that I might still be charged because it was now within the 48-hour window. I explained that my first voicemail had been left approximately 56 hours before the appointment. I was told someone would review the voicemails and call me back. After waiting two hours without hearing anything, I called again and spoke with someone else who was noticeably dismissive. I was told that no one had listened to my voicemails, that I hadn't been charged "yet," and that they "did not want to give me a time" for when I could expect a callback. At this point, I no longer feel confident in the office's organization or communication. Between the long wait, the rushed appointment, the confusion surrounding my prescription, and the repeated difficulty simply reaching someone to cancel an appointment within the required timeframe, my overall experience has been frustrating. I'll be finding a different dermatologist for my future care. Update: After posting this review, I was contacted by a manager from the office who asked whether I would consider removing my review. I declined, as this review reflects my honest experience. I have since encountered another issue related to my visit. I received a bill that processed as out-of-network, despite verifying before my appointment that the office was in-network with my insurance. The provider was also listed as in-network through Zocdoc, and my insurance information was transmitted to the office through that platform. I also called and was told, yes, they are in-network and they even charged my copay during my visit. They billed me an exorbitant amount of money as out-of-network and deducted the "copay" amount from what was owed. At no point was I informed the visit would be out-of-network, or what the estimated costs would be. I contacted the office regarding the billing issue and requested a direct contact for the appropriate billing representative. Instead, I was told that someone from billing could reach out to me. Given my previous experience attempting to resolve an issue with this office, where multiple voicemails left within the required cancellation timeframe went unanswered, I was not comfortable relying on the same callback process and chose to address the issue directly with my insurance company instead.

I felt I got extra volume in the places where I needed it (cheeks, temples, softened nasolabial folds) and it looked very natural. I got compliments and even inquiries. Dr. Vafa said I would need to return for a second round, because I wouldn't notice any changes after the first round (I did and I really should've just stopped there). The second time around, I felt I looked over filled. My face looked just generally more round and filled, less sculpted. Under the eyes looked better, and my cheeks looked bigger. Unfortunately, my lower face has gotten heavier though and my nasolabial folds are deeper than ever (the original insecurity I had come in for). One thing that really, really bothered me is that both times I saw Doctor Vafa, after initial injections, he would put any remaining product in my jaw (lower cheek). On both occasions, I told him not to put it in my jaw/lower face (as I naturally have a small, feminine jaw with a pointed chin. I told him I was really happy with the shape of my jaw/chin and did not want to make any modifications) and on both occasions, he did not respect my decision and after initial injections, he would inject all remaining product there despite my objections. He said it would protect my jowls (I did not have jowls, I was 29/30 when I first saw him with a thin face, nothing was sagging and I do not carry fat there.) Instead now, I have a heavier lower face, with a more masculine square jaw and now I can't change the results. 15 months out I now have additional skin and volume there in the lower cheek, that has started to sag and now have premature jowling. I liked the initial work that he did but I really wish he had respected my opinion and wants because I have to live with seeing my face everyday and I'm not happy with it.
