Lots of bunkers, lots of waste area, lots of water, numerous blind shots...but a fun course, five Par 5's & five Par 3's, a couple of very short par 4's. A Mike Stranz aware winning course on the site of a former Indigo plantation, thus the name True BLUE! The day I played in mid-June it was 91 & 71% humidity. Stay hydrated people, heat exhaustion will get you out here! You get a VERY small bucket of range balls included with your green fee. The NATURAL areas are massive, lots of sand, saw grass and undergrowth. Rather than build cart path along fairways, many holes are connected by the Natural areas of sand very similar to Tobacco Road. I really like the Shank Shack between holes 9 & 10 where you can get food & beverage and not come back to the Club House. The carts are equipped with GPS and they will BEEP at you when you go rogue off the fairway or near the greens. We played TB on a 12 person golf trip. The organizer of our trip reserved the scooter cart/bikes months in advance. We drove up from Charleston for the day. When we arrived despite confirming several times weeks beforehand about the bikes we were told immediately there was only 2 available and that the others were being used or broken (?). Apparently reserving them means nothing. That sort of kicked off the tone of the day. This course for the money is in terrible condition. Once you get off the first hole fairways are burned out, patchy, or covered in thatch. The greens got progressively worse and the traps are a disaster. Worst part of this place is the nickel and diming. Trying to relax and play a round and you're met on multiple tees by people asking you for a $50 photo, asking to make donations for things, etc. A one off is fine but when 5-6 holes someone is pitching you something to buy it gets tired. Won't be back. We were supposed to play Caledonia in the afternoon and didn't bother, we just left. Dog track. read more

My son, Patrick Smith, and I, Dolly Bevan Manion, drove over 3 1/2 hours to play True Blue (a misnomer) for the first time on Sat, the 27th of Sept. With cart and green fee it was $186 for each of us. We have been playing golf at many different courses for more than 30 years and it was the worst golfing experience ever. I will recount the experience -saving the BEST for last. We were not allowed to take the cart to the car to load up. Thus, had to tip the attendant at the bag drop for putting our bags on the cart. No outside coolers allowed so you had to purchase any beverages from the hospitality cart of course at a highly inflated price. you could USE a small cloth bag cooler WITH ICE the size of a small purse if you purchased a six pack of beer for $28.00. There was GPS in the cart but not only to give yardage and relevant playing info, but to advertise and repeatedly to caution that railroad ties are slippery when wet. It was also used to send messages to the players. Shockingly, the attached disgusting message appeared around hole 17. Now for the BEST part- While waiting to go to the first tee, we were informed there was another couple playing with us- a very nice young couple from NY. The guy was a good golfer. Patrick is a very good golfer. Regardless of how we are playing on a given day, we pick up after we have reached double bogey on a hole. We DO NOT play behind schedule unless we are being held up. The female of the pair should not have been on the golf course. She never picked her ball up until it went in the hole- mostly after 10-12 strokes. She putted out each hole- putts less than a foot. She took at least 15 seconds to line up every shot. At the green she lined up each putt by squatting and holding her ball at eye level! What was that about? Naturally, we fell behind. The rangers kept approaching us and telling us to move on. Verbally and on the screen we were informed that we were going to be forced to skip holes unless we caught up. I explained to one ranger, "Barry", why we were behind. Rather than telling the female that she was taking too much time, our foursome was warned to speed up. On the back nine, True Blue's pressure and the frustration of playing with a pure novice, destroyed my concentration. Both Patrick and I seriously thought about quitting- something we have never done. At the end of the round at the bag drop, an attendant asked Patrick how he enjoyed the game and he told the guy it was unpleasant due to the constant cajoling to speed up. The response unapologetically was that "they" tried to get as many golfers "teed off" as possible and Saturday was a busy day. Well, we were totally "teed off" and will not play at "True Blue" or sister course, Caledonia, again. Oh, and by the way, it took 5 1/2 hours to play. read more

So torn with this one - the layout is mind-blowingly fun - a young Mike Stranz layout that could be and should be the Myrtle Beach area's own Tobacco Road, yet the group that owns this facility seems to be paying all of its attention to sister course Caledonia, (which is excellent). True Blue is so unique, it should be a highlight of your golf trip, yet it's a black eye. From the lazy staff preoccupied with personal business, to the unkept range requiring a token to get you maybe 20 balls, the start is disappointing. It's not until you get out onto the course and experience bunkers that are completely disregarded and badly in need of attention, does your disappointment come to a head. See, the holes and layout are truly magnificent, but attention to the customer experience and on course maintenance are such an atrocity, somewhere, you know Mike Stranz is rolling in his grave. Just completed a long weekend of golf in the Pawley's/Murrell's area....and True Blue was the best course we played. This is a well managed golf course. You definitely get a private course vibe, they go out of there way to make you feel appreciated. Even after heavy rains, the course was in immaculate condition, drains better than most. Tee boxes and Greens were in epic shape. Just a beautiful track, wildlife galore...deer, big birds, and gators. Very challenging course w/ more tee boxes than you can count. The biggest compliment I can give them is they do not overbook. We finished in less than 4 hours...after a 6 hour round the day before on a neighboring course. You get what you pay for, this one is well worth a couple extra bucks. Cart girl seemed to pop-up right on time and we closed out our weekend w/ a great lunch in the restaurant..I'd call it a snack bar, but they are a legit restaurant. You cannot go wrong here....the negative reviews must be from jealous competitors. read more

We played in early January, perfect weather in the high 60s. Although it was winter season the course itself was in fairly good condition, except for most of the greenside bunkers which looked like they had not been attended to in a long time. Fairways and greens were in nice shape. Most of the water stations were not available. That said the conditions did not support the fact that this is one of the "premier" courses in the area. This is also one of the courses that we refer to as a "customer unfriendly" course due to the fact that they do not allow you to take the carts to the range/practice areas nor the parking lots. We are in our 70s and still get around fairly well but why do we have to lug our bags around?? About 50% of courses have these rules, so why do some allow and others do not? Probably to make things more convenient for themselves. Forgot to mention....The range balls were some of the nastiest I have ever seen, not what you would expect for a course with these prices and supposedly one of the top courses in the area. read more

For such a nice course, focus on the customer is really lacking compared to what I expect in the Myrtle Beach area. Let's start with the cart guys paying attention to why one of them didn't score on his date the other night rather than the golfers. One of them practically screamed at us for taking a cart by the driving range without their ok. (Big rules infraction there guys!!!) Once out on the course, we were followed by an army of mowers & maintenance guys doing their thing in the middle of the day, about 1/2 of which had enough consideration to shut down & get the hell out of our way. At a high dollar price point, they really didn't provide a good experience. There are so many other options in the area & I will certainly bring my $100+ elsewhere next year. read more

This was my favorite course on our trip. I loved the length and course conditions. Every hole is a beauty. The breakfast was delicious. The range, with multiple targets and fairways was a perfect place to warm-up. It's too bad the condo's line some of the holes. This is what my playing partner called "a man's course". The starter accidentally spit on me when giving us his speech on the first tee. Pretty disgusting start to the round. I like how wide open the course is, yet it is too your advantage to be on certain sides of the fairways. Hands down, my favorite of the four. Favorite hole 18; least favorite hole 4. read more

Played on a REALLY cold day which meant an hour delay and cart paths only. Course is beautiful; no two holes alike and all strikingly pretty. Wide fairways and huge greens mean if you keep your ball in front of you it is a fair course. Clubhouse is nothing to rave about but the bar/restaurant area has a nice view of the 18th hole. We played the course March 10/ 2018 paid $139.00 to play little pricey but I always like the layout. The greens on half the course should have been closed no grass they sprayed green hydro seed firtalizer. I was like putting on crusty dirt. Cart paths need major work and some paths closed. Pace of play was slow, but it was a sold out morning and marshals were out there doing what they could to help speed things up. Sometimes things are out of their control. We had guests this past week and we played golf on this course. We booked a foursome and one threesome. We arrived 45 minutes before our tee times and the outside staff could not have been any less organized. My husband tipped the guys and I had to put my own clubs on the cart. Our guests described this course as "herding cattle". The course was in good shape, but it is too expensive for the treatment that golfers receive. They put a huge memorial tournament out and failed to tell us until we were on the 14th and 15th holes. Then they proceeded to send a ranger out to tell us that we all had to be off the course by 2:00 PM. We completed our rounds in 45 minutes. It was ridiculous! The ranger should have been out much sooner moving the foursomes in front of us. read more

We had 8 guys of good golfers and the started out 1 hour past our scheduled tee time. The they did not police the course with Rangers as they had sternly warned us the would do. It took 3 hours to complete 9 holes. Finally a range comes by after 12 holes of suffering through this to say that the group 4 ahead of us now had 4 holes open ahead of us. No shit! Did the do anything about it NO!!! After 5 hours and complete darkness we stopped after 16 hole and 5 hours. Did they offer us anything no, just excuses. Never again will I give money to this organization read more

Recently moved to Pawleys Island and researched membership rates. For $1900/yr, you can join. Not bad, I thought, after retiring, that joining a club might be worth it as I plan to play a lot more. The usual rate is about $140, so that's about 13 rounds a year just to break even. Once you join, your member rate is about $25 and your guests pay about $40. So tack on another $325 if you play 13 rounds in the year. Now you're up to $2,225 before you've teed off. Not much in the way of perks associated with the membership. You also belong to Caledonia across the street, which is beautiful, but lacks a driving range. So, I decided not to join, and play there maybe 5 times this year, and avoid what most of my neighbors say is a painfully LONG round. read more

Our group of 12 golfers got a rain check in 2014 from True Blue. We returned to the course 2015 to honor our rain check. On arrival we were accessed a extra $60.00. It would seem that we could of been told of their rules about seasonal extra charges back in April when the tee times were made. Be aware. Read the other reviews of the lack of customer service and believe them. While this is a nice course to play the lack of customer service far outweighs that. I cannot even begin to describe the poor management of this operation nor the arrogance of the pro shop and cart guys. My friend has a place in this complex and will not even golf here, even mentioning that the course is rarely crowded and the parking lot is usually empty. Do yourself a favor and take your kindness, time, and money to the other courses in the area. They will gladly treat you far better than this ego inflated place. Caledonia, the sister course to True Blue, is more costly but usually crowded and the parking lot is full, there is a reason for that. Pay the extra money and enjoy golf, you only live once. read more
