We love our library! It provides great services to the community, has an enjoyable children's area, and has always had what I am looking for. Staff is friendly and the building gets the job done. My only question - why are you locking the drop boxes on days the library is closed? The drop box exists outside of the library so that you can interact with it without having to visit the library. The library being closed should not impact being able to drop off a book in a bin outside the library. What are we doing here? Stop that. read more

The Troy library never stops giving. From great programs for young and adult to all around great service. My granddaughter joined '1,000 book before Kindergarten', and still loves going there at 8 years old. There's a play area she enjoys when visiting me. I've gone to countless activities for years, and I really like that the staff is incredibly helpful. I have enjoyed awesome speakers, learned how to cook an Italian dish, and wrapped my Christmas gifts (with everything provided) just to name a few this year. Love this library!! read more

West bound on Big Beaver, make a right at Civic Center Drive, just before the 75 entrance, miss this turn and you have a really long drive to find a chance to turn left, drive way back turn left again, get in the right hand lane and make that right into Civic Center Drive. Once you manage to get onto Civic Center Drive and go to the end to find the library you have arrived at the IT spot; what a gem this library is. Staff are pre-occupied with their own phones, duties and who knows but once you get their attention they are knowledgeable and will help you. The setting where this library is located is beautiful. There are plenty of trees, shrubbery and flowers. The library is spacious with a sitting room for reading books and a sitting area for reading magazines. They have a beautiful, well-appointed, Friends of the Library shop with some of the nicest, attentive staff that you could ask for. We came when there was a book sale going on downstairs. I purchased 3 puzzles, one paperback and a magazine for $4.00 - how can you beat that! They have a cafe area where there are plenty of vending machines and tables/chairs to sit down to. Take a break, come to this library and browse the huge selection of books, magazines and media. read more

Great library with huge selection of books. Love the children's area and the activities for littles.

I have had a library card from the tender age of 9 years old, any city I live in I obtain a library card... This library is exceptional. The staff is amazing and always ready and eager to help. read more

We love this library for our baby girl! There are so many toys, felt stickies, magnets, books, and other activities to keep your little one busy! They have classes, like the Rhyme Time Live we attend (you can register online for free) there is music, dancing with your little one, and stories. They use props like instruments for each kid or scarves that really get the kids involved and excited . And the best part is afterward it's a free play with all the toys kept in the classroom. The doors are shut too so you do get a chance to socialize with other parents knowing your kid cannot go out of your eyesight. They do free play on mondays in this same classroom too where the kids can play with these other special toys but there isn't music or dancing organized. It's another great way to have your child learn about socializing and sharing while you as the parent can have fun too! read more

Troy Public Library - Rhyme time live ! Our daughter at 15 months LOVING every minute of it - Libraries Near Me - Troy, Michigan

I was in the area waiting for a meeting to start in the evening and stopped on to do some work. They were having the carpet redone so it smelled of chemicals. I went to the librarians desk and asked if they had quiet study rooms, she informed me that they do not and instructed me and my friend that we could study and have a conversation at the round white tables around the corner. The chairs were comfortable but the tables are very small. We did a bit of work and moved inside to check out the library. My friend wanted to check out magazines so we sat in the magazine section. This is not a good place to sit if you want to read anything important. It's very noisy. You can hear noise from the librarians, other people and an echo coming from downstairs of the people talking down there. They have zone markers for noise and it's what's called a courteous study area which is moderate noise. Other than that the library is nice, well stocked and the staff is friendly. read more

Always a great library. Many selections and the staff are very helpful. It does get busy though so sometimes it's hard to find a seat or table to study at, especially during the evening. read more

TPL has a wide selection of books, so you'll most likely find what you need here. Plus, they also have a cool selection of DVDS, comics, and video games. Service: The librarians are very helpful and kind. TPL also has plenty of free programs, such as film screenings, family crafting, and how-to classes. Interior: When I step in, I can't help to feel like the library is a bit outdated. Meh. Studying area: Good amount of seats with decently comfortable chairs. They don't have study rooms but rather a designated "quiet study area" with cubicle-like desks. People are generally pretty quiet but you'll want to bring your headphones. There is also a group study room in the main entrance. Parking: Plenty of space to park. read more

This is a solid library in metro-Detroit. One of the best I'd say. First of all, I must commend the diversity. About half of the folks here are well-to-do suburban ethnic minorities, such as Indians, East-Asians, Middle Easterners, African Americans, etc. Troy library also serves much of the nearby Troy High students as well as Troy Athens students - being some of the best public high schools in the area - the library is accordingly equipped. Secondly, I must applaud the sheer size and amenities of this institution. There is Wi-Fi all over the establishment, there is a huge children's area if you have kids, a "friends used bookstore," a gift shop, a cafe you can get coffee and snacks at and talk louder in, and a huge elaborate adult section with its own computer lab and media library. The adult section has a lot of comfy quiet seating, tables/chairs, and study pods for students to study. Also the selection of movies at this library would rival that of a mom & pop movie rental store. There are several hundreds of movies - including even movies in international languages. I even found a handful of movies in Malayalam - my native tongue which most Americans haven't even heard of! The selection of music, domestic, and international magazines (all up to date) would rival Barnes & Noble - and of course here there is no shame in just reading stuff for free! This library has a lot of friendly staff and the patrons are all so warm. It's near the corporate corridor of Troy - so very close to the police station and just a stone throw from I-75 and Somerset Mall. I live in Sterling Heights and come to this library since it's somewhat better than the Sterling Heights one - as it has more of a homey feel. My only wish is that libraries had longer hours - but of course that's just how most libraries are. Troy closes around 9pm most nights and possibly earlier on weekends. If you live within a 15-minute radius of this library, I highly recommend this library to you. There are probably many family, student, and child oriented features that I don't even know about at this place - you really have to visit and inquire to know for sure. read more

Extremely rude staff! The people in the circulation department are very unfriendly, rude and least helpful.

THIS LIBRARY ROCKS!! I just can't believe it might be closing because people are too cheap to support it. What a waste. This library is about 20x as big as the city library I grew up with and I am just amazed at everything they offer! The first time I walked in, my jaw just dropped at how big the building was--room after room, section after section, aisle after aisle. And that was just one side of the building--I hadn't even ventured to the kid's side! I've actually only been here a handful of times, and I know I haven't even scratched the surface of what's available (there's only so much I want to do when I'm dragging a toddler along). I have borrowed books and DVDs, picked up books on hold (thanks to their website reservation system), and have always been helped in a timely and courteous manner. Of course now that the hours have been cut, it's a little busier than it used to be, but it's still a top-notch place that I HIGHLY recommend. read more

Troy Public Library - Self-serve hold area (partial) - Libraries Near Me - Troy, Michigan

Sorry for wrecking TPL's 5-star rating ... but ... Pros: Self-checkout machines function well (except when you need to unlock a DVD or CD case - then don't even attempt self check-out), their selection of books (YA and fiction is mostly what I read) is great. Cons: When you have to wait in line, it's always LONG. Parking lot is set up kind of oddly, I always have to park in the back and do the 5-minute walk. I'm kind of spoiled because I've been using the West Bloomfield library for most of my life (recently moved to Troy), also ... the building is kind of old/not that big. But it has charm, too. Overall, this library is just okay, though I'm able to find what I want, usually - and if not, I can use MEL to order it. (Michigan E-Library) read more

I grew up in WB/Bloomfield and have been spoiled by those cities respective libraries. Based on the size and other amenities offered by the City of Troy, I am a bit surprised this place never got a facelift. It is a nice enough library, but the Troy can and should do better. read more

My hometown library. Remember coming here as a kid in the kids section and participating in all the activities. Same in the teen room with chess, origami,Wii, and so many others... and all the summer reading programs I participated in. Not the one to grow "library hopping" haha but from what I've heard, TPL is one of the better libraries in the area if not one of the best. Latest venture was yesterday and they just redid the main counter, entrance, and much of the signs inside. Can't say much about the millage but the library was almost closed back in high school when I needed it the most and it's on the ballot to be renewed in the upcoming election. It's really an incredible resource for so many. This library even has Blu ray discs to check out as well as current PS4 games and such. Not many libraries have that to say. Reading...it does wonders for the population and TPL is a staple to this community. read more

I am a library fanatic, and I've lost count of how many libraries I've been to. The Troy Public Library is without question, the best library I have ever used. Let me count the ways: Book selection: the TPL has a huge selection of adult, teen, and children's books. And often, there are multiple copies of each book, so there are plenty to go around. If by some chance, the library doesn't have the book you are searching for, you can use MelCat, a program that ships books (and other media) to your chosen library from other libraries in the state. DVD selection: The TPL has a massive DVD collection, and almost all of them are completely free. There is no limit on how many you can rent. Parking: I have never had to take a 5 minute walk to the library as mentioned in another review. I've never had an issue with parking, and it's never taken me more than a minute to walk from my car to the library. Staff: the staff is absolutely wonderful. They are all very friendly and knowledgeable, and there are enough staff members to answer questions when needed. I've noticed that in many other libraries, there aren't enough staff. This isn't the case here. Programs: there are so many programs available to TPL members. The library has contests, activities for children and adults, and even offers help with job hunting. In addition, there is a large computer center. read more

I don't know why I didn't start going to the library sooner. They have great books, movies, audio books, you name it. It is easy to check stuff out - they just have this scanner where you swipe your card and then set down your book and it already knows what book it is and checks it out for you. I usually use the online system as well. I find a book I want to read and place a "hold" on it online and if theres a waitlist I get put on the waitlist and when it's ready for me I get a notification and it will be there with my name on it on a shelf ready to be checked out. They also have an app where you can check out digital services such as kindle books right from home which is awesome. They also have a lot of community programs. Seriously, I love this library! read more

They seriously need to remodel this library and clean it. It's so old and dirty. They need new tables, chairs, carpet, and need to paint. All this tax money and they can't even fix up a nice library for students to study at. They also need new lighting because it's so dark and depressing in here and need more windows. Maybe add an outdoor patio too for the summer with nice tables to study at...just sayin! Get it together city of Troy! read more

I love the TPL. Easy to park, friendly staff, large selection of books and DVDs. There is a special French DVD section at the rear of the building just FYI. Borrowing items is easy and my favorite feature is their search engine online. The website is simple, user-friendly and you can create a wish list of items and of course order online. Then picking the items takes 2 minutes from the lobby and returning items can be done from your car in the parking lot! read more

This is a place of many childhood memories.. it's a shame they're closing this library down I first started going here 20 years ago and used it throughout high school after class. It was definitely one of the top libraries in the Metro Detroit area in terms of selection, organization, and excellence of service. read more

I love this library - they have a lot of material, you can place holds on items you want, and any item I've submitted as a suggested purchase has ended up on the shelves. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. read more

Space is smaller and most of the staff are courteous. There is not consistent training of the staff and everyone is not aware of the policies. This can become problematic when staff become insistent with incorrect information. If this happens to you just ask to speak to another staff member. Overall, it's a cute little library filled with students and families spending their afternoons browsing the shelves. Despite the initial poor impression, my experience was unremarkable. read more

This library has a pretty decent selection, nice facilities, and overall helpful librarians. They have a great number of documentaries on all sorts of subjects as well as lots of audiobooks, and you can rent video games from here - although the price is a bit ridiculous IMHO. Certainly not a huge downtown multi-story library, but a nice place overall. read more

They don't have up to DVDs. I have to check Playaways before I Check them out because some of them them are missing battery cover or the strap that goes around the neck. I have been charge for a book that the binding was broken before I Checked it out. I don't like the fact it is closed on friday when I want a book for the weekend. It started because the lack of millage being passed but when it did at a later date when it did passed they kept it closed on friday. I do like we can use the mel.org to get books from other libraries. I used that to get books on nursing because they have about one book on the subject. read more

While this library lacks the splendor or ample quantity of study rooms proferred by newer buildings, it gives a definite sense of vibrant community and involvement in literature. Families are around all the time. I wish there were more areas for group study though. read more

Positive attributes of this library: 1) Large selection of hard copy materials: books, DVDs, music CDs, magazines and newspapers. Additionally anything they don't have can usually be obtained through Michigan's inter-library loan system. They have a "New" section for books, movies and CDs from which you can quickly browse recent acquisitions. 2) Electronic resources. They are fully participatory in the digital media evolution. With your library membership you can check out digital books (print and audio), music and magazines. 3) Self-checkout option 4) Convenience. You can renew materials online, search the catalog, place an item on hold, wherever you are. 5) Strong volunteer support group: Friends of TPL. Their presence and advocacy for a successful funded library is notable. They fund raise continuously through on-site used book store (inventory from patron donations) and a gift shop. 6) Special programs. They seem to keep getting more, of interest to all ages. 7) Friend's Used Book Store. I briefly mentioned this in 5) but deserves its own bullet point. Cheap prices (as low as $1 for CDs and books, .50 for magazines, paperbacks) and are continually getting new inventory. Very limited hours (3 hours each on Sat/Sun) so need to hot-foot it down to the basement level where they are located when they first open to get first pickings. read more

As a citizen of Troy, the TPL is very convenient and offers a wide variety of books, CDs, etc. Very organized and their staff are extremely helpful. Great use of online resources. Online holding, library inventory search as well as the option to renew your books are some of the many luxuries this library has to offer. It even notifies you of when your books are due in advance! Highly recommend. Completely fortunate to still have this library around. read more
