If you have problem hair then this place is worth the drive, price etc. Albert is an absolute master at knowing how to cut hair --the cut lasts and I go much longer between cuts so it doesn't cost more for me. I have super fine hair, and I just haven't had haircuts and services of this quality. The salon is friendly and there is a cute shop attached that I find treasures in, the people are flexible and will work with you as well--I love that--but really for me, it's all about the cut and I think Albert (and Leah too) are just amazing at what they do. This place ties with Earthly Delights for being my favorite local boutique. There's always something new and different here, there's always some delightful, super-affordable little must-have, and their clothing selections and prices are fantastic (they're my hook-up for Ryu brand). I saw so many great gift ideas, even some incredible ones for $10 or less, on my recent visit. La! I wish they were open at 5 on Art Hop nights -- I always miss them because they're closed when I head into town and they're on my route in but kind of out of the way when mid-Hop. They've got great lighting for their artwork and they always seem to feature gorgeous pieces. I'm probably the rare bird here in that I've only ever shopped the boutique side of the building (they're better known for the well-reviewed salon on the other half of the space). If I could get this place 10 stars I would. Excellent, excellent, excellent service! First they were so wonderful on the Phone. Treated us very kindly and like we were the most important people in the world. When we got to the place late because we got lost. They treated us with such respect. The owner even took our sweatshirts and hung them up in the closet for us. They then served us coffee and green tea. The best part by far for me was the amazing scalp massage. Who knew?? I also loved the salon chairs. They are dentist chairs from the 1940s. They were so comfortable. Both my daughter and I got amazing haircuts and are very satisfied. The price was reasonable. And I really like the fact that they took a lot of time with us. Most the time at salons, I feel rushed. Like they just want to get done and get to the next customer. The owner came over and helped with both my hair and my daughters. The owner and the lady doing my daughters hair both blew dry her hair at the same time, made her feel like a queen. The three week cut, and then the three week trim (free), is wonderful, leaves my hair much more consistent than the long before a cut and short after. The three week trim (free) keeps it shaped, and my hair much more even. The staff listens, and consults with the other stylists to make my hair look right. I've been to Tromblay a number of times over the last 10 years for hair cuts. My most recent visit was not that great in terms of final satisfaction with my cut, but overall I'd have to say I'm a fan. I adore the fact that they do not - as company policy - accept tips. However, the flip side is that they do push products pretty heavily, so if you have a difficult time saying 'no,' that might present a problem. For Kalamazoo, services might be a bit on the expensive side, but they have a number of stylists, so costs for cuts vary - you can always ask for a less expensive one. My last cut here cost $34. Considering I didn't have to tip, and don't have a problem saying 'no' to unnecessary products, this would be like paying $28-30 at another salon. Other than the salon services, Tromblay also has a wonderful store with interesting clothing, jewelry, accessories, etc. I've always found things I'd like to buy, and have on occasion purchased gifts here. read more

I came in from out of town and my sister recommended I call tromblay to get a haircut. I called and I got in that day by a stroke of luck :^) I'm pretty sure I got the owner of the salon (older gentleman very professional and educated) and they treated me incredibly well. They wash your hair and give you an out of this world relaxing head massage first before cutting you hair. Once that was done I told him what I wanted and he in turn threw some ideas at me which incorporated the ideas that I wanted. So off we went and I have to say that that it was one of the best haircuts I've had in a long time. Even though I live in Detroit I will be back (I already have it scheduled) I recommend trying it out cause you will be pleasantly surprised :^) read more

Overall I had a nice experience going to this salon. It was my first visit and upon entering I found the atmosphere a nice blend of cozy and artsy with shopping options. Nice! My stylist was Andie (not sure I'm spelling her name correctly) and she was very nice, listened patiently as I explained what I've done to my own hair during the pandemic, and asked her to please to fix it, which she did excellently. I like the idea of collaborative input from other stylists but did find it a bit strange when another stylist suggested a mullet being I am a 50 year old female with shorter blond hair. I found this a bit of an odd recommendation that was obviously out of my comfort zone and went for a french bob cut instead which Andie executed excellently. During a brutal winter, there was a coat check and coffee at the door, and local artist works to peruse while I awaited my styling. I LOVE this place. Everyone there is so helpful and polite and the atmosphere is wonderful. I hate that every time I go there I find about 5 really cute things that I must have, but that's to be expected. I got the funkiest, coolest haircut I've had since moving to Kalamazoo from NYC. Amber did a wonderful job giving me a short, asymmetrical cut that worked great with my curly hair. Then she went a step beyond and did several different colors of highlights that gave the curl a ton of dimension and definition--I've received tons of compliments and the cut is still easy to care for. I was advised by a friend to check out this salon, after having one too many lackluster cuts by another trendy salon in Kalamazoo that will remain nameless. I walked into Tromblay on my lunch hour, and asked if they could help fix a bad cut. The owner sat me down and in 5 minutes turned my bad hair day around, free of cost, and in a very friendly manner. I have been seeing Ambre, who is the owner's apprentice, for the past 4-5 months and she is fabulous! Ambre listens, and is excited to try daring styles. She loves her craft and it shows in the care and effort put forth. Ambre is being overseen by the owner at this time, and will soon be another full-time addition to the Tromblay family. Prices are great, you get the full salon experience, and they have a great, quirky boutique to boot. The entire staff here is friendly, not snooty and uppity like other salons on the mall. I found my new go-to salon in Kalamazoo. The staff is so gracious & talented, and was able to fit me in on a few days' notice during a holiday week! I love how the team consults with each-other on each client, and I loved seeing such a wide variety of clientele inside the salon. On my lunch hour a friend and I went to Tromblay to browse their clothing section. We both work in a professional office downtown. We we arrived we were not greeted. We had a question about a clothing item and after speaking with the receptionist she said she would get back to us. We left our contact phone number. After about 10 days she did call back with the information we requested. The very next day we visited Tromblay and were told that the item was sold the day prior. I feel like they could have called to let us know that the item had sold so we would not have wasted our time returning. I really didn't think they were even going to call because 10 days is a long time to get information on an item. They were not very friendly, gave excuses and didn't even say I'm sorry. They acted like we didn't belong there. We will never go back there again. read more

I went to this salon once and loved it and was excited about returning. As I left the first time, I made an appointment for my next appointment. When I din't get a reminder call for my appointment the next day, I called the salon to confirm the appointment. I called to find out that the appointment never fully made the books. Here is the extremely disappointing thing, I asked if I could at least get hair color and they told me I could only get a cut. I received my services from Ambre, and couldn't have been happier. She listened to what I liked, and took my personal style into account; Her scalp massage was supremely relaxing, and her makeup skills transformed me into the best possible version of myself. My new cut is flattering to my hair texture, face shape, and personal style, and it gave me a major self confidence boost! I had to spend over $1000 fixing the mess my former stylist made. My hair was overbleached and started breaking badly, and when I voiced my concerns I was brushed off. I got fed up with the damage and decided to have her color it red. It ended up dark brown with blotchy, horrible-looking highlights. I had to go to another salon and have it cut off, re-colored, and have extensions put in. Tromblay stylists do not have any idea what they are doing. Beware. read more

I have been interested in Tromblay for a while and I always stopped in to check out their trinkets when I was downtown. On one occasion, receptionist Lori asked if I was interested in getting my hair done someday. After I explained to her my slight fear of hair salons from bad experiences I've had in the past, she told me that they had professional hair stylists and that I could come in, have a free consultation and talk with the stylists before I get any cuts or color done. She asked me what I think I would like to have done and then quoted me at $100 for my hair to be trimmed and to have highlights added. She also added they do not accept tips, and that tips were included in the price. I felt that the price was fair and told them that I would keep this in mind when I was ready to have my hair done. I made an appointment with them about a month ago to specifically have my hair trimmed and blond highlights added. When I arrived, I was seen by stylist Judy. The attitude I received was very cold and careless. I had a bad feeling, but I trusted from what I heard, and read on their website, that they knew what they were doing. Once I was settled into the chair, she asked me what I wanted done to my hair. After I told her that I wanted a trim and highlights, she brought over another girl and they showed me some hair swatches and said that "these colors would look great with your skin." I was unsure but again, I believed that they knew what they were talking about so I agreed. I was never told that they were going to dye the whole underpart of my hair red, and they never told me that this was going to cost a fortune. Once I was in the sink, Judy gave a very nice head massage, and proceeded to tell me about how horribly damaged my hair was, and suggested that I should buy some product to reverse it. Again, trusting her snotty opinion, I thought to myself about it and agreed .However, I had a budget planned out for this hair cut/color and maybe if the price was decent then I would buy some. Their products were only $12, which is fair but I asked her to clarify the price of today's cut/color to see if we were on the same page still with $100 that Judy quoted me. "I believe......$160? Around that is what we are at." she whispered to me. I felt ill. I had to have a glass of water because I almost threw up hearing the price. It was NOT what I had in mind. Once she was done blow-drying my hair, I couldn't really tell just how bad it looked since the lighting was so awful. It looked okay. However I noticed that it wasn't what I asked for at all. I just wanted to leave, I was on the verge of bawling my eyes out . Once I got up to the front desk and heard, again quietly, now "$170", I slowly handed her my card. I must have looked in shock or upset because the girl said to me "Don't worry, it won't be this much every time you get your hair done." I grabbed my card and my receipt and bolted for the door. Once I got home, and in better light, I could see that the foils bled everywhere, and my highlights were 2 inches away from my scalp; it looked like I had been growing my hair out for months! This was the WORST dye job I have ever had. I couldn't even look in the mirror. "$170 for this?" is all I could think about. I could have done a better job myself! I cried and cried and went to bed, 2p in the afternoon, and slept until the next day. I called them a few days later since it was "their weekend" (not open Sunday or Monday), and I talked to Lori this time. I explained to her what happened, she apologized, and told me to come back and let them fix it. She said that they could have me meet with Judy again and I told her absolutely not with Judy. I asked if I could skip the embarrassment and just have a refund or partial refund. Lori said they don't do that and I could call back the next day to speak with Susan the owner. I called the following day, spoke very briefly with Susan. She was obviously told by Lori that I was upset and that I need to come in. I gave in and figured that if I couldn't get any of my money back that I might as well just have them fix it. When I arrived the following day, at the time Susan told me to come in, The other owner Albert, Susan's husband and "expert stylist", sat me down WITH Judy standing right behind me. He began to belittled me for my ignorance in hair salons, and color prices, and when I told him that I wanted my hair how I asked he refused to put the certain shade of blond in that I requested because "It doesn't go well with your skin tone." Upset I said "just do whatever", and Judy began to color again after I specifically said that I didn't want her to. My highlight are near my scalp, but I have MORE spots where the foils bled, and it still isn't how I wanted it. For the time and $ I wasted, I do not recommend the horrible services and disrespectful staff of this salon. They "guarantee" their services, but they never promised to be respectful about it. read more

After sitting down with their stylist and asking for a NEW ALL OVER COLOR, their "apprentice" (maybe that was my mistake) "stylist" put in FOIL HIGHLIGHTS (?!?!) and then charged me for the ALL OVER COLOR (which she did not even change....) AND foil highlights which I DID NOT ASK FOR!!!!!!! $90 later, I have hair that I hate. Thanks Tromblay! What a joke. Tips: DO NOT GET AN APPRENTICE STYLIST. I tried Tromblay based on -a referral from a friend. I tried them for the first time recently and after leaving the salon, felt ok about the cut, the problem is, as we all know, that it's near impossible to ever get your hair to look as styled or finished as when they do it for you. Once I actually washed and dried my hair on my own I nearly cried. It was a complete wreck., They kindly got me back in right away for a re-do. II felt much better the 2nd time around. My girlfriend had the worst haircut of her life here. Un-dyed roots, an uneven back, and she felt like everything she said about how she wears her hair wasn't listened to. She didn't like how they styled it when she left, and a week later it hasn't gotten any better. They had a good idea, but pain no attention to head and how her hair actually lays. Less than a week later and the color has faded by half, so it just keeps looking worse and worse. The fact they let her walk out the door looking like this and charged her full price is just wrong. read more
