We had a fantastic walking food tour. A great mix of food and Kansas City history. We are not from…read morethe area and came for a long weekend and this was a fabulous way to learn about the city and enjoy the food!

Being an Independence resident, but knowing somewhat about the history of Kansas City (my dad…read moreworked for KCPL for 35 years, and used to take me up and down those streets), I was vaguely familiar with some of the history. It's quite fascinating. But the little bits and pieces I didn't realize were so deeply important. I'd only been to 2 of the locations on the food tour, Grinders, and Grunaer's. That is funny cause I thought I'd been to more places around the area. The American Royal Parade was going on, and parking was an issue, if I'd not found a spot in Grinder's across the street parking lot, I don't know what I'd have done. I never intend to learn to parallel park. It scares me to death. We met Rebekkah at Grinders, and she presented us with maps of where we were going, with facts on the pages. Frankly, it'd be easier to park kind of in the middle of the tour. That maybe something worth mentioning. I don't know the significance of the Crossroads itself, other than I am drawn to that area, as opposed to the Power and Light District which I try to avoid. There is alot of history in the Crossroads that is important, and it was touched upon in this tour. It also gave me an idea to keep an eye out for other city's walking food tours, as I travel sometimes for a month. I felt like I wanted to know more history. I wanted to dig deeper. I don't know why I feel this way. Maybe I want to know the very importance of the area, besides Tom Pendegrast, which is extremely interesting. The tour touched on a few restaurants along the way. There were a couple I wondered why they weren't mentioned, and I'd love to know the history of the Manny's Building, though Manny's isn't a favorite of mine, the building is interesting. And why is Town Topics just in this area? And Lulu's? Hammer Press as well, even though it's not a place to eat...oh well, can't cover everything...I thought there was something missed, but also alot of interesting history gained. As far as food, each place provided a very small amount. A variety was present and they were able to accomodate both vegetarians and meat eaters. There isn't that much food. I would tell someone that, as well. The places that stood out in my mind were Snow and Company, Grinders, Elbow's and Cafe Gratitude. Tons of walking to get back to our cars. We stopped back at Christoper Elbow Chocolate. Rebekkah created a customer out of me, and I will be eating at Cafe Gratitude and going to Snow and Company. With these thoughts in mind, I would recommend this to an out of towner if you were in the city for a while. But be prepared to eat afterwards. it's a great way to find out about Kansas city and what it has to offer. Knowing the history of Kansas City makes me appreciate it a bit more.

If you go on this tour because you're super into the paranormal, you're going to be disappointed…read more You'll want a lot more ghost content. If you go on this tour because you love hearing stories about gangsters, whatever the decade, you're going to be very sorely disappointed as there were only one or two allusions to the Mob. And if you go on this tour wanting to learn a lot about Kansas City history, it's... fine. I actually work in a local history archives/library and heard no real misinformation from the iPod narration or from the costumed tour guide or bus driver. I'd give you a very different three-hour tour of the city if I had my druthers, but this wasn't my tour. If you go on this tour because you're visiting from out of town, I'll tell you that what's nicest about it is that you'll get to see parts of town that wouldn't be on any other tour - you head through the West Bottoms, the East Side, and into KCK, in addition to hitting spots in Downtown, Westport, and the Plaza. In any of these cases, though, I'd tell you this tour is kind of overpriced at $30 a person. If they dropped it to $20, I'd recommend it to visiting friends and family. In the meantime, I'll recommend that you keep your eyes open for another Groupon deal like I had and keep your expectations moderate. In the meantime, be in touch and maybe I'll take you on my own tour of historic Kansas City.

What better way to kick off Memorial Day weekend than with a little Mafia and paranormal activity?…read moreRight? WRONG. I purchased a discounted ticket from a friend who had bought the tour's Groupon but was unable to use it before it expired. I went with another friend, and although we both have above-average knowledge of Kansas City history, we thought this would be a great way to explore the city's spookier side. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the whole tour. Although the host had a great costume, he seemed less than comfortable talking to the bus full of tour-goers, which was surprising given what he said was 20 years of experience with Full Moon Productions and at least 2 years of experience with the tour. Most of the tour information was relayed via iPod -- yes, iPod. It made for clear, easy-to-hear anecdotes, but I wish the tour guide would have provided more of the narration and entertainment. We made numerous stops including Union Hill Cemetery, St. Mary's Church, Elmwood Cemetery, Union Station and Sauer Castle, among others. After taking the tour, I'd have to suggest that it be renamed the Kansas City Ghost Tour. There was little mention of Kansas City's Mafia history, accompanied by a brief cruise through the River Market with the only highlighted stop being the Opera House, which formerly housed the River Market Brewery--and even that was because of a reported haunting. I did get some great photos, and even suspect that I may have captured some paranormal orbs around St. Mary's Church. Yet overall, the tour seemed contrived and a smidge cheesy. If you can get tickets at a discounted rate, it may be worthwhile--otherwise, you might just want to pocket your money.
