Great atmosphere, really nice place. They were very busy. Most of the food was quite good. Not enough staff, they were run off their feet, resulting in hit or miss service where staff didn't have time to come back to your table. This meant missing things like refills, getting sauces, bringing over the wrong dishes, missing dishes, etc. One of our meals was a bad cut, that went unaddressed because there was no one to check back on the meal. If you go on a slow night it's probably a much better experience. read more

A rather weird experience dining here. The server seemed to cover the entire restaurant & so was a bit overtasked. Wife enjoyed her steak, though thought her mashed potatoes came out of a box. I had the seafood risotto, which was far too overwhelming in size, making it a somewhat nauseous experience eating barely half of it. We had a marvelous dinner at Trio tonight. Got off a busy day that included five plus hours of driving. The crab cake appetizer was great. Crunchy Pablo breading not at all greasy. More chunks of crab meat instead of finely cut meat would have been better but tasted great. My wife had excellent maple glazed salmon. I had surf and turf with a rib eye and scallops. Tender seared scallops were very fresh. The steak was perfect (I like rare) and very flavorful. Great turnips as part of the veggie medley. Mild flavor which was unusual. So, where does one eat in Sydney, Nova Scotia in the middle of a snowstorm? Lets just say there are not many options. Well, I don't know if snow "storm" is really the right word, but it was definitely messy. We were at a bit of a loss when the place that was recommended to us ended up being closed when we got there (even though we called an hour earlier and were told they were open), due to the weather. Luckily, I'm extremely smart and have an amazing memory (insert sarcastic scoff here) so I suggested we try out Cambridge Suites, for two reasons: one, I had stayed in the hotel on business last year and remembered it was nice inside, and two, the owner of our B&B also recommended it as a place to have a good meal. I think TRIO is fairly new (it used to be called something else and they renovated if I'm not mistaken). In any case, there were only a few tables occupied (which isn't a surprise given the weather), so we had great choice of seats. Since I'm a dork and notice completely useless stuff, I loved their neat swirly cutlery and pink recessed liting in the ceiling - it felt very warm and modern with a touch of quirk, which was nice since most hotel restaurants tend to resemble prison cafeterias more than a warm, cozy place with lovely waitstaff. Our waitress was really friendly and helpful - attentive without being pushy. The boy and I were immediately drawn to the Lobster Poutine because...well, why wouldn't you?! Ummm, french fries topped with hollandaise sauce and chunks of lobster and cheese?! Ya, DELICIOUS. We ordered this as an app, and I ordered another app (bruschetta) as an entree bc I wasn't starving, plus they brought us bread. The boy ordered the chicken quesadilla, which he only ate about half of bc he was too full (though the leftovers tasted really good in the car on the way home the next day!) I have to be honest, the bruschetta wasn't my favourite; it was on pita for one, which was tasty but made it more awkward to eat, plus there was some kind of ingredient in the topping that had an odd biting taste to it. I can't place what it was, and it didn't taste terrible, just....wierd. It was still good and nicely presented but I've just had better. However, my Long Island Iced Tea was delicious (and only $5.50, which I think given the size and amount of liquor was a great price) and we ordered Maple Creme Brulee to eat back at the room that was also delicious. I liked that they had generic menu items that you would see on many menus, but with a little twist. On top of this, I tweeted a photo of the poutine before we ate it and I got a Tweet back the NEXT MORNING from the hotel thanking me for stopping by! I was very impressed by that, and it was a great example of effective social media usage for customer service. This is something I will definitely share with people, so good on them for encouraging positive word-of-mouth. I would definitely recommend eating here if you visit Sydney anytime soon. And I've since decided from now on, whenever we are stuck for a place to eat in a new, unfamiliar place, we will give hotel restaurants a try! read more

I wrote my original review in 2012. So this is an update. My wife and I went back to Trio last week for supper and were not disappointed. Service as usual was excellent and friendly. My wife had the seafood pasta. I sampled hers and it was amazing. Very generous seafood including mussels. Perfectly cooked pasta. Wonderful rich creamy sauce. Can't say enough about it. My wife was hugely impressed as well. I can never resist the chowder here. Simply one of the best anywhere. Rich and creamy with perfectly consistent texture. My only gripe which is a personal one is I don't care for large chunks of potato but that's just me. My wife thinks that's just crazy. My only disappointment is that they are not open for lunch. It used to be one of my favorite places to go for lunch when I was in town. But that's a business case. Also the fish and chips are not available every day on the menu which is a shame because they were fabulous. Still an excellent venue that has adapted their menu to the economic realities obviously. but Trio is still easily one of the top one if not two restaurants in Sydney area. After many stays there I can also highly recommend the hotel itself. Enjoy read more

I think the Atmosphere was nice, the food was ok, a little over priced for the skill of the preparation, (example: there is really nothing that makes their deep fried calamari any different than any of the other deep friend calamari's I've had in town) . I was really surprised they they didn't use heated plates, they seem to have a really open kitchen thing going on but I think the lack of heat lamps just contributed to my food coming out / getting cold quickly. I don't feel like the staff was super friendly with me either. IDK everything was fine. read more

Four stars for the service, and 3 stars for the food - too bad I can't give it a half star in-between rating. The so-so food won over and I only rate it a 3 overall. The food was just ok - nothing amazing or great, but not bad either. One of the seafood pasta dinners had very good seafood but the pasta wasn't good (over cooked and bland). The hamburger was a good size and pretty good, but choice of sides was scant. The chicken dinner special was very good. The salmon dinner, however, had a very small portion - but at least tasted ok. Presentation was average: better than a rushed after work eat-in meal, but not what you'd expect for the price. Service was great. Very attentive without being unstudied. Very friendly. read more

My husband and I had supper at Trio tonight. He had a half garden salad, very generous portion, and the maple salmon. I had the seafood hot pot. Both were delicious. Excellent and quick service. I also had the apple crisp for dessert. Sadly that was disappointing. Too much like oatmeal and not enough "crisp"...or cinnamon. Live music in the lounge was good but a little loud. read more

One of the few places open later on a week night. (They close at 10PM.) I've only had dessert and tea/coffee here. They're Maple Creme Brûlée is very good! Light and not too sweet. I've had their chocolate truffle cake as well. It's a big proportion, so be prepared! The service is attentive and friendly. I never feel rushed. It's a great place to relax and chat with friends. I was so impressed by Trio!! My family visited on our road trip from Toronto while we waited to board the Ferry to Newfoundland, and we were absolutely blown away. First of all, the service that Kelly provided was among the best service I've ever received. She genuinely cared about my family and made a personal connection with us that stood out from all of the other restaurants on our trip. She even made recommendations about where we should travel on our journey. Also, our food was extremely tasty and worth every penny. They were extremely busy that day and were sold out of some of the sides by the time we got there, but that did not take away from my experience at trio. I had the Atlantic salmon Oscar with basmati rice and seasonal vegetables. The hollandaise sauce on top of the shrimp, lobster, and salmon was extremely well done and really brought the dish together. Above all else, Kelly's service was impeccable and deserves very much praise. I do not usually eat at hotels for fear of subpar food and service, but Trio absolutely blew away my expectations. If you are really into creative and inventive dishes skip this place. Could be great but the execution isn't there yet. I could not eat my entree of stir fry. Literally drowning in salty soy sauce. I could almost taste the antibiotics in the chicken. Once again it proves that beauty is in the eye of the beholder! The waitress was very nice, however. Very attentive and comped my entree so there was no confrontation necessary. Salads were mediocre at best and the scallops the same. One star except for the service. read more
