I need to hype myself up just to book the appointment, and then double that to actually show up. But, a friend recommended Derksen Dentistry, and after some extensive (read: borderline obsessive) research, I decided to take the plunge. I needed an advanced root canal and figured, why not throw in a cleaning while I'm at it? The first thing that set the tone was my call to Susan. She was so calming and reassuring that I felt like I was calling a life coach, not a dentist's office. She promised me they'd make my visit as relaxing as possible, which is a tall order when you're about to face down a drill and some sharp objects in your mouth. When I arrived, I was promptly greeted (on time, too, which felt like an anomaly in itself). The assistant was super helpful, constantly checking in with me during the x-rays, which was nice since I was pretty sure my mouth was about to go on strike from all the poking. Then came Dr. Derksen. Now, I'm not the type to buy into "auras" or anything, but this guy had an aura of, "Hey, I've got this. You can relax." I felt it. He triple-checked to make sure I was completely numb before starting the root canal--because apparently, "feeling your teeth getting drilled" is not on anyone's bucket list. The whole process went smoothly, and to my surprise, I didn't leave feeling like I'd just fought a battle with a power tool. What really sealed the deal was that they followed up the next day to check on me. I mean, where else do you get a dentist who cares enough to make sure you're not secretly plotting your revenge on him for the trauma? Long story short, I walked out of Derksen Dentistry with all my teeth intact and a new, surprisingly positive outlook on dental visits. Worse pain I have ever felt with my last previous dentists. It was barely numb before the pliers went to work. It all ended with with a dry socket (you don't want one of these.) Ended up going back to my dentist of 20 years, where he had to rebleed the socket and pack it. After two weeks, It is now finally healed. incendently, I followed their post-operative instructions to the letter. I will not go back to this outfit.

This is why I felt so betrayed when his associate, Dr. Baker, supposedly a "pediatric dentist" burst into the exam room and launched a violent verbal assault at my teenage daughter for unexplained reasons. He screamed at her at the top of his lungs "Are you a BABY?!? You need your MOMMY in here with you?!? I have 4 year old patients who are less scared than YOU!". It went on and on. She was sobbing and shaking and he was so loud that the receptionist came running. I still can't comprehend what triggered this, I guess he was personally offended that she was very anxious and scared. I had told the receptionist that she was not only very anxious/dealing with PTSD from prior difficult medical experiences, but that she was also very self-conscious and ashamed because of this, so she would cope best if they just go on with things and don't don't draw any extra attention to it. I don't know what she then said to HIM or what he heard in response, but his response was the most unhinged and unprofessional behavior I have ever witnessed. The receptionists and hygienists were mortified and apologized profusely for his behavior. Office manager (Dr. Valley's wife) offered a bland, profesionally distanced bit of nothing. Dr. Valley said nothing, did nothing, never called us for any kind of a debriefing, apology or to check on my daughter. I expected more from him. His silence told me all I need to know. The next dentist we saw reviewed the records, and their professional opinion was that what they were calling cavities were not, and she did not need the fillings.

They don't take my insurance (BCBS-Illinois), but I'm coming back for complicated procedures anyway because the care is THAT good. They also offered me payment plan options and accept care credit, so I was able to find a way to cover my care.

I have had bad experiences with dentists before and Dr. Deyoung always takes the time to explain the procedure and what is going on with my teeth - as well as gives different options for treatment. She never pressures her patients into any type of treatment, and I haven't had any problems with the filling she did 2 years ago. The office and staff also goes above and beyond to answer any questions. When I had questions about the filling material (I was pregnant and am breastfeeding) Dr. Deyoung did the research and was very attentive to my concerns. This really is one of most pleasant offices around, and I would recommend Dr. Deyoung in a heartbeat for any dental work.

It's been a few years since I'd ventured in to a dental office and was pleasantly surprised with the new techniques they used (high-tech and painless bite wing x-rays). First time I can remember leaving a dentist office that my jaw and gums weren't threatening to get even with me.
