Please avoid Tribal Expressions/Opulence at all costs. Keith, the owner, significantly overcharged for their service and jewelry. Not only was the service and jewelry overpriced, but the jewelry was also unnecessary, unwearable and caused ear problems. I was charged double the quoted price (with jewelry included), despite confirming in advance via phone that there would be no additional fees prior to booking the appointment and outlining the situation via notes and in person my original piercing experience with the "gun" 40 years ago. I was shocked when I was billed over $200 at the time of piercing and immediately contested the charge. The experience was time-consuming, as Keith frequently bounced between customers and those counter surfing. Even with my appointment, I was there for an hour after arriving ten minutes early. The final outcome was completely misaligned and lopsided piercings, resulting in extra, unnecessary holes in my ears that are permanent. I have photos to support this, and anyone who sees my ears, including George the piercer at Strange World (who I can't recommend enough), can attest the appalling result. Great place and service. Only down fall is the price, find it a bit too steep in getting the ear lobes pierced of the fee (each ear) + earrings + the backing and down the road you need to change (if you wish) to shorter back after 3 months (plus that fee). I won't be recommending Tribal Expression to anyone, I felt they ripped me off over the earrings, as they never told me they changed separately for the back of the earrings, why charge for the front and back separately when you need both. It was also too late to cancel once I got there because they will then charge a % for cancelling and not having your ears pierced. I got charged $20 per piercing and they used the same needle for both ears, you would think because you're paying $40 you would get a different needle for each ear, my second ear they did really hurt and has never heal up, they said it hurt because of the adrenaline kicking in after the first piecing, but I have a little lump inside where the needle went, it also hurts still after 4 months and I can't put an earring in due to that. It has an infection now. So $139.00 and I have to go and get my second ear done again somewhere else after it heals up and I have earrings I'll never wear again. I should have just gone to a place that does free piercing with a purchase of earrings as it would have been a lot cheaper and most likely wouldn't have got an infection and I would have a pair of earrings I would actually wear again. The front end staff are amazing angels -especially when in desperate need to see "the queen" when one pulls half of their piercing out by accident. Argh!! I explained (in a panic) my situation but there were no openings initially for the same day (no surprise there because T.E. is the one and only #1 place to go!) The best place to get piercings in Calgary! The staff is so patient and welcoming to everyone who walks through their doors. About a year ago I got my helix pierced and loved it. I had no complication at all. 6 months ago I got my nose pierced and I'm obsessed! Finally, today I got my daith pierced and couldn't be happier. My experience: came in to have my tragus repierced (it had grown over the old jewelry due to car accident) and change out the jewelry (I have both pierced). Turns out the hole was still open and I didn't need to pay for the piercing. Great! I chose my jewelry, the ball and the backing are each sold separately, and they are insanely expensive compared to what you can find online but they will only use their own jewelry. They then came back to me and said they only had it in titanium and it would be an extra $10 for each ear. Ok fine. When it's time to pay my total is !!!! $157 !!!! for two tiny tragus jewels. She apologizes but says she meant it was an extra $10 per item, bead and backing for each ear. So +$40 That felt shady AF. Two days later and I'm back here because the jewel and backing in one of my ears fell out & was lost and the backing in the other wasn't long enough so it was super swollen (even though I'd mentioned that to the piercer the first time). I have gotten two piercings from Tribal in the past three years (right tragus, left cartilage) and then a third one today done today (left conch). Tribal is professional, clean, and is Calgary's only piercing shop. For these reasons, I wouldn't want to go anywhere else. They also will give you 10% off body jewelry if you print off an online coupon or show them your app; and have an extensive collection of body jewelry. Some of my friends have gotten piercings at tattoo shops or places like Merle Norman and had serious complications. I have never had an issue with infection or gotten a keloid. The people at Tribal are qualified and know what they are doing! Go here! However, I write this review because today, I had exceptional service. My piercer, a newer staff member named Hailey, was extremely kind and knowledgable. She put me at ease, was easy to talk to, and is clearly passionate about what she is doing. Even though I have already gotten two piercings there and know how to care for a new piercing, she clearly outlined how to care for it as per protocol, which she is obligated to do. I would highly recommend her. She is the friendliest staff member I have interacted with at Tribal. My new piercing looks amazing and is way less painful than I have anticipated! I've had a few things pierced at Tribal Expressions - my nipples and my septum. I followed the cleaning instructions and both times the piercings would not heal and felt infected. My septum was pierced at a weird angle so the ring would push against the bottom of my nose. When I asked the piercer about it right after, she said it would stop this angle once the swelling went down. Months later when it isn't swollen, it is still at the uncomfortable angle. I had my Septum pierced years before elsewhere and there was no issue. I am sure because of all the positive reviews, my experiences were just one-offs, but I won't be back after giving them two chances. read more

I got my nose piercing done here a year ago, and they were absolutely fantastic. The staff was really helpful and friendly. I actually managed to scrape a sizeable chunk of skin off my ankle on my way down to the shop-a biking mishap-and when I got there they actually took me into one of the rooms and disinfected and wrapped up my ankle for me before my appointment. As all the other reviews say, they are very professional, and very clean, and I have had no problems with my piercing or my jewelry. They are on the expensive side, but they product and services are absurdly good, so it's worth it! read more

Went here for some Laser Tattoo fading and the great thing about it was the price per session. I was quoted at 350 $ per session at other establishments and got it done here for less than 200 per sitting. Easy to book and quickly down to buisness. I would rather get my balls pierced than go through that again, if I had to describe it I would say it's kind of like being burned ...with a laser. I will be getting more Tattoos but they will be better thought out. My old tattoo was faded quite well over 3 sessions; still visible but enough to get an effective cover up done. I went with the cover tattoo because it was better than the straight fading that can leave a mark . If I end up not liking this one I will reutrn to Keith for more fading but whatever that's future Alan's problem; screw that guy he's an asshole. "Wow...AGAIN!" This is the summarized, tl;dr version of my (second) experience at Tribal Expression. I actually received my new piercings in August of 2012. 8 MONTHS LATER... Yeah, I should have written this review a couple of months afterwards. Alas, time slips by with work and school. Anyways, I received two additional helix piercings in my left ear. Needless the say, this experience mirrored the first - crazy hygienic rooms, super polite and friendly staff, decent prices...the list goes on! I was a wee bit nervous getting two helix piercings...I mean, this IS cartilage we're talking about! Honestly? It didn't hurt that badly. It's a bit of a pinching sensation, a bit worse than drawing blood yet not as bad as getting local anaesthetic. It does take a lot longer to heal, but I researched this type of piercing in order to be prepared. I was definitely more diligent with caring for these piercings than my last one, and it turned out fantastic! When I go to get more piercings, I now have a regular place! read more

Keith is kind of my go-to piercing guy. I found him when I was considering something more complicated and just got confused sounding responses from some other studios. I haven't pierced much (particularly nothing complicated) for some time but I was in there recently for just a lobe. I don't believe Keith does any piercings anymore - he's kind of more into scarification and laser removal next door from the sounds of it. Maybe he'd get involved in some of the more complicated things (like what brought me in to begin with). Either way he owns both the tattoo and piercing stores that are side by side. Something I find very interesting because originally a selling feature was the dedicated nature of Tribal Expression. I guess his staff does one or the other though so it's still specialized. Tribal expression is very professional and uses some of the best sterilization around Calgary. Some of the other places use from fairly shady practices like piercing with larger gauge needles to make jewelry insertion easier when it totally makes it more painful and harder to heal. I do find with a TE lobe piercing it barely feels like I have have a brand new piercing - I'm going to have to remember I have one to do after care. The one thing about TE is the expense. The jewelry is more expensive (but higher quality and custom) and the piercing itself is a bit more. I certainly wouldn't recommend going here for something cheap - piercings here are an investment. I've cheaped out before and then regreted having a mainly tattoo guy do an "ok" job that was harder to heal. Now I've found my way back. SAIT students do get 10% off btw which does help a bit if you're a student (it's also very easy to get to from SAIT) read more

Tribal used to be my piercing parlour of choice until my recent experience. I went to get a dermal removed from my chest. I had one removed by a woman who is no longer there - two years ago - and it has healed perfectly. You cannot even see where it was. So - I go back about a month ago - Summer 2017 - to get another removed as it was ejecting. When i first walk in they say - no problem $10.00. The first time it was free and I left a tip - but no worries. I will pay $10.00. Then another person comes in and she says it is not $10.00 but $20.00. Okay people, get it together and know your prices. Is it $10 or $20. I agree to pay the $20.00 as I have already made the trip from the South of Calgary to get this thing out. My first experience was good. The woman cut it out, gently. Leaving ZERO scarring, like I had mentioned. This time, it was a guy. He laid me down. Had a look. Got his tools ready. Grabbed a hold of it and PULLED IT RIGHT OUT! WTF! Now. I have a great pain tolerance, so it did not hurt. But that thing was in my body for TEN YEARS: of course the skin will be grown around it! I looked down - and there was a big string of skin coming out of the hole. He bandaged me up and sent me on my way. Not even cutting the skin off that was there. So - I get home - and I sanitize my scissors and cut the string off that is just hanging out. Days go by and I am massaging the skin with essential oils and coconut oil because I know that this is going to scar. And sure sh*t, I have a horrible, ugly scar. NOT IMPRESSED. So - two weeks go by and I have to get my third one removed. So I certainly do not go back. I head to a small little shop and the gentlemen cuts it out for free (yes I gave him a nice tip). It took about five minutes - vs the 2 seconds from Tribal. I am BEYOND disappointed at how they handled this piercing. I have an ugly scar that will probably take at least a year to go down and for the colour to fade. I massage it every single day in hopes of it just going away. In all honestly, I might have to get a plastic surgeon to remove all of the scar tissue as it just is not breaking down. DO NOT GO HERE FOR ANY PIERCING REMOVALS. For a place that I trusted, I will NEVER go back. Shame for thinking that ripping out a piercing was the best way to remove it. I could have done it myself, and for free. read more

I have had four piercings done here before (nose, two tragus, and forward helix). The studio is very nice and clean and their sterilization practices are fantastic. Each piercing healed well, and the actual piercing process barely hurt at all every time! The cost of the piercing itself is reasonable, however the jewelry cost is high. For example, for the helix I just had done, the labret stud backing cost $35 alone, and then the front gem bit is an extra $15 plus! It is however high piercing grade quality so I can justify the cost. My biggest issue with the jewelry is selection is that I personally like really simple jewelry which they never seem to have much selection of, and are stocked with colourful pieces which I don't care for instead. The reason I took off a star is due to my most recent experience there. The piercer I had, Nia, was quite short tempered with me. I know she is a great piercer because she did a great job on my nostril a few years ago and I recall her being quite pleasant then. Perhaps she was having a bad day, but having someone grumpy hold a needle to your head is quite unnerving, and made the whole experience less than satisfactory. My piercing does look nice though, which is what matters most. Overall I would return to this studio for future piercings and would recommend the place. :) read more

Never actually got my piercing done here. They ended up screwing up my appointment 2 times and I decided to go somewhere else. I originally booked on March 2 at 11:00 a.m, and then called 3 days before (Thursday) to re-book to Sunday March 1st at 11. The person on the phone told me he had definitely changed it. I never received confirmation the night before, so I phoned again on the Saturday. Turns out he never actually booked me in, so I had to re-book at the earliest time they had available for Sunday, which was 1. The same man on the phone said he would call me again to confirm....I never got confirmation. Can't say anything about piercing quality, but the organization overall wasn't great. read more

I've been here for many piercings and I find the atmosphere is normally pretty good. Although, every piercing Ive gotten from here has gotten infected, but that could just be my own sensitivities. The prices are a little steep, I paid $200 for a double helix, my most recent piercing. I've had my nose pierced here as well, and I found they were helpful when I was dealing with a keloid. But the woman who pierced my helix, Danielle, was not as friendly as the other piercers. She did not seem open to answering any questions and when myself or my friend asked about healing or after care she'd give a short and useless response. It seemed as if she'd thought I knew how to deal with after care, but in reality I had no idea. She even mentioned some sort of thing I was supposed to do where I twist the earring and something about a click, but never actually explained what I needed to do so I still have no idea what I need to do. Still love this place. But hoping next time I come I don't end up with Danielle. For $200 she should be much more friendly and open to questions like all the other piercers, because when I'm with someone else I normally have a great experience ! :) read more

I should have left a review awhile ago, but I can't even express how sad I am with the nipple piercings I received from this shop. I've now been instructed by a different shop to remove my left nipple piercing, let it heal, and have it repierced - which isn't something I should have to do. My right nipple piercing is straight, healed well, and is flush with my skin, whereas my left one is crooked, too shallow on one (so the left ball on the barbell is almost coming out of the centre of my nipple and not the side). This entire experience has been a headache, and I'm almost positive that the piercer most likely realized when she pierced me that she had made a mistake, but unfortunately I didn't notice. I wish I had taken note of the piercers name, but at the time I didn't think to. If you're going to get pierced, I recommend Sondra at the Arthouse - who has a great portfolio, a medical license, and tons of experience. I'm sure there are great artists at this location, but unfortunately my experience wasn't a good one. read more

Came here to get my ears pierced. My piercer was Great ! Very profession and kind, however the front desk staff needs a bit of an adjustment. The reason i am giving this place a 2 is that i feel like i got ripped off when purchasing my earrings. I think its ridiculous to charge a seperate fee for the FRONT and the BACK of an earring...since you cant buy one without the other. The prices are NOT posted anywhere so I feel like the girl just quoted me whatever she felt like. I spent $100 on simple metal studs... which is an absolute rip off. Due to this i will NOT be coming back or recommending this place for piercings :( read more

I found out about Tribal Expression on the radio. They professed to be Calgary's only exclusive piercing studio, so I figured they would be a good choice for my next piercing! I called and made an appointment with Keith, who has 15 years of experience, for an anti-tragus. This would be one of the largest piercings I have had, so I thought an experienced piercer would be the way to go. The studio has parking in the back. The inside is quite modern, tiled floors, raised front desk. The receptionist was nice. After a wait of close to 20 minutes, I guess they were sterilizing my jewelery, Keith came out and introduced himself. The receptionist had already talked to me about the jewelery they use, but Keith told me again. They pride themselves on the custom jewelery they have made with the highest quality metals. But the barbell they chose to use on me was plastic, with metal beads. They claimed that it would help prevent infection, which still doesn't make sense to me. The room I was in was quite large and clean. Keith had me lie on the bed as he prepared things. He marked where he planned to pierce then had me look in the mirror. I told him I wanted it moved more out and up the ear a bit. He had me lie down again and put the clamp on, I got the feeling he hadn't done a lot of these particular piercings. The clamp hurt more than the piercing, but I had heard that is normal. I would say that the actual piercing part went smoothly. After I waited a bit to sit up, I looked in the mirror and saw that he had pierced it more up the ear but not out, like I asked. I was okay with it though. When I was paying the receptionist and Keith both strongly recommended their after care salt cleanse. The cost of a bottle wasn't bad, about $12, so I chose to get one to help take care of my new piercing. The cost of the piercing was $30 and the jewelery was $40, for plastic! So everything cost me about $80! I found that a bit steep. About 3 weeks after my piercing, it had continued to get more and more sore, even though I cleaned religiously. I eventually got an infection and went to the Dr. for some antibiotics. I called the studio and talked to the other piercer Lindsay, she told me to come in and they would extend the bar and help the piercing drain. So I waited until the infection cleared up mostly then went in. Lindsay is a less experienced piercer, but she was nice and tried to take care of my ear as best she could. She removed the current bar and put in a longer one, so the swelling wouldn't stop it from draining. That was more painful than when I got the piercing, but that would have been because of my ear being so tender. I did buy some more cleaning solution, but they didn't charge me anything for changing the bar, which I was thankful for! After regular cleaning and a few cleanses the piercing got quite a bit better. So I returned to the studio and had the bar shortened, again for no cost. This was at about 4 months and the piercing still hadn't healed completely, I was told that this was because it was a thick cartilage piercing. The next couple months my piercing shifted, I think my body was trying to get rid of the foreign plastic in my ear. I also had couple keloids develop at one end of the piercing and also at the back of my ear. I have never had a problem like this with my other cartilage piercings. I emailed the studio about what I should do, take it out or try other jewelery and I never received a reply. I called and the guy I talked to just told me to come in, he didn't have any advice. Another piece of jewelery would cost me $40 even though they are supposed to be a wholesale dealer. I still haven't decided what to do, I worked so hard to keep this piercing. For a place that claims they are "Calgary's premier piercing studio" I didn't feel I was in any better hands than other studios I have been to! In fact I feel that the initial piercing not being where I wanted and the jewelery is what has prevented me from really enjoying my piercing. The cost of getting a piercing at this studio is too steep for the experience I have had. I think this is a good place to go for high quality jewelery, even though they didn't use it on me, especially if you need something custom. I probably won't be returning to Tribal Expressions for any other piercings. read more

I went here to get my navel pierced, it was clean and I only had to wait about a week to get in. The problem is... Keith pierced it crooked and when I went back 6 months later to get it checked one of the other employees told me it looked like it was pierced a little too shallow (for her liking), little did she know that I'd had it done there. After I told her it had been done by Keith, her opinion changed and she said it would be ok. I went for a second consultation with a different studio and the person there pretty much said "it will probably grow out because it's too shallow, and the piercing itself is crooked, it's not due to migration". Now, about 8 months after the fact, it's still healing and I'm not sure if it's going to ever end up healing... there's a pretty good chance it's going to grow out. I don't know... maybe they do other piercings better than this... I liked the cleanliness and I know they did a good job on my sisters ears... but they're pretty bad when it comes to navel piercings. read more

I've been pierced twice at this shop, and have since booked a third appointment for a third piercing. Everyone is really friendly and helpful, both the front end staff (who often are piercers too) and the piercers. I like having super knowledgeable staff at the front end to help pick out suitable jewelry for my needs. Probably the BEST part about Tribal Expression and why I keep going back is that you can pick any jewelry they have there to be pierced with. This is not the case at most studios. At the previous studio I used to go to, you had one, MAYBE two choices of jewelry. It was unfortunate because I've always wanted my septum done, but was unable to due to jewelry choice, I had to be able to hide it for work. SO after speaking with a friend who got hers done at Tribal, I decided to check them out. Jewelry selection was good, next came the health & safety stuff. I'm willing to pay an extra buck to get a quality piercing that won't leave me infected with a nasty disease because there wasn't proper sterilization. Tribal expertise and sanitation checked out. The prices are comparable to the other shop i used to go to (Immaculate Concept). Both my piercings are well placed and healed well. Mike did my most recent piercing, and I'm excited to go back to have the second part done (I was too broke to do them at the same time...) Most of the time any issues with infection and bumps have very little to do with the piercer or the studio, but rather it's all about the aftercare (or lack of). Follow the guidelines, wash your hands and use the recommended products and procedures for cleaning and your piercings will heal well. Continue cleaning your piercing even after it's 'healed' that's just good hygiene. read more

I had a navel piercing done here a few years ago (long time ago I know, just never got around it posting a review), but I thought I would give them a thumbs-up for a couple things: First of all, the place was spotlessly clean. I was really impressed at how sanitary the rooms were and how stringently they cleaned the piercing materials. Good sign! Secondly, I found the jewelry they sold to be very high quality. As far as I know, they only pierce with their own jewelry which is not a big deal but as a warning, it is quite pricey. You get what you pay for though, I never had any issues with the navel bar rusting, etc. The service was very professional, albeit a bit late (I booked one of the last appointments of the day, so they were a probably behind by that point- I ended up waiting an extra half hour but it was fine). I don't remember the name of the piercer, but she did a great job and didn't rush through it, despite the time constraint. I appreciated that a lot, as it's not something you want to mess up! Overall the piercing has turned out fine, no issues with infection etc. 3 years on. It is fairly expensive, so just a heads up in advance that you'll probably be looking at paying at least $120 for a navel piercing (with jewelry included). I would recommend this place if you want it done right the first time though! read more

Came here to get my septum pierced after seeing Dee works here now. She did all my previous piercings (5 in total) and they all healed beautifully. First of all, everyone from the guy who made my appointment to the girl who called me to confirm my appointment were ridiculously nice. When I came in everyone at the front desk chatted with me and made me feel super welcome and at ease. Dee of course did an amazing job of my piercing, gave me all the after care info and told me to call anytime with questions. Awesome front staff who are very helpful in choosing jewellery! Overall a great experience and would go back.

I really enjoyed my experience with the piercer, he did a double nostril piercing; one on each side. They are perfect ! Second day having them. There were two girls are the front working, one girl was very respectful about my female pronouns but the other girl kept calling me "He and Him" when I'm in fact a "She, Her" that's one thing I didn't like. I've never been here for a piercing, only to buy new jewellery. All of the staff were friendly and professional and everything was very clean. The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was that I bought a nose stud (about 90$) and had to pay extra (I think about 30$) to have it fitted properly (I have a very small nose so the post would stick out). Everywhere else I've been has included this for free so I was a bit disappointed. Overall I had a good experience, I would go again, and they've got free parking in the back! Just checked out their sweet television ad that states "5 star rating" on Google as of January 2018. Perhaps don't lie to clients, you don't have a five star rating it's RIGHT ON GOOGLE , your jewelry is extremely low quality. You claimed on your website that your tribal made jewelry was Canadian, but you actually posted after changing the website it is half made in Canada and half made in China. Stop misleading all of us! my helix piercing was so botched by Dee I will never go back there ever again. My girlfriend was forced to purchase a nostril screw for her nose, when she wanted a labret style stud, we were told you ONLY use nostril screws and they're only made of gold. Ridiculously expensive and such a rip off. We went to an APP shop and had the jewelry changed to implant grade metal and paid less. We are covered in piercings and tattoos, I know what I'm talking about. I'd never step foot in tribal again. read more
